COUNSELING TEACHING POLITICS MEDICINE MEDICINE ACCOUNTING 2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT Dear Friends, I am always moved by the students I meet and the stories CONTENT they tell about their lives, their hopes and dreams, and their persistence in pursuing a new path for themselves and their Chair and Executive Director Letters families.

Our Guiding Principles...... 2 Remberto Rivera is just one example. His path to college wasn’t clear. He credits Denver Scholarship Foundation for We’ve Demonstrated What’s Possible. . . . . 4 helping him find the clarity and motivation he needed to pursue success rather than settle for low expectations. Now, What We Can Achieve In Five Years...... 5 he works as an accountant for Wagner Equipment, where to him the sound of calculator keys is heavenly (his words). Our Community and Supporters A lifetime Denver Resident, Remberto graduated from Denver Scholarship Foundation North High School and became the first member of his Board of Directors...... 6 family to graduate from college.

Denver Scholarship Foundation He wanted to go to college, but had no idea how to get there. But, North High School hosts Honor Roll of Donors...... 7 a Denver Scholarship Future Center, staffed by one of our College Advisors. She helped him navigate the confusing path to college. Remberto credits his experience with his Denver Financial Report 2014-2015...... 13 Scholarship College Advisor for making college possible for him. Remberto graduated from the University of Denver in 2013 in front of 37 cheering family members.

This is what makes Denver Scholarship Foundation beloved to me--our students, each one of them. Our board and staff align to do everything in our power to remove the financial barrier to their pursuit of higher education. These scholars are our future. And it’s gratifying when they not only succeed, but start giving back. They work hard. They volunteer in the community and for the Denver Scholarship Foundation. Some of them have become donors, even at a young age. And many set an example for their brothers and sisters to aspire, too.

To me, this is remarkable. And it’s what should be. Thank you for believing in these young OUR MISSION people, too. And for finding it thrilling when you hear them cheering. The Denver Scholarship Foundation inspires Sincerely, and empowers Denver Public Schools’ students to enroll in and graduate from postsecondary institutions of higher education, by providing the tools, knowledge, and financial resources essential for success. Cathey Finlon Chair, Board of Directors Denver Scholarship Foundation Chair Letter Dear Friends,

As many of you know, I am very much like the young people we support. I grew up in a single family household in Montbello. My mother worked hard to provide for my brother, sister and me. She had dreams of a better life for us, and long story short, I ended up on the right path, went to CU and eventually earned a doctorate in History from CSU.

It wasn’t a straight path. I was a teen parent. But I had mentors. And I had scholarships. In those days, it didn’t take as much funding to send someone like me to school. That’s not the case anymore. It’s why I believe in the Denver Scholarship Foundation and it’s why I’m proud to have worked for Denver Scholarship since 2008, first as Director of Program, and now as Executive Director. I look into the eyes of our students and I see myself.

As we prepare to celebrate the tenth anniversary of our work in the fall of 2016, we are proud of our progress. We are especially proud of our students. Since our founding, we have awarded over $25 million to more than 4,600 Denver Public Schools graduates. Since 2010, 78 percent of all our Scholars have either completed their postsecondary accreditation or continue to succeed in their program. Our Scholars contribute up to $8 million to the local economy each year or nearly $10 for every dollar we invest in each Scholar. That’s a tremendous return on investment. And I mean an investment in their lives as well as an investment in the strength and vitality of our economy and our community.

Education is the foundation of a successful community. That’s why our work continues to shape our economy and our future. But, we have to hold fast to our progress.

By 2020, 74 percent of all Colorado jobs will require a postsecondary accreditation. If we utilize our resources to ensure that every Denver Public Schools graduate has the opportunity to pursue a postsecondary degree, they will have the opportunity to participate in the new economy and help it thrive.

That’s why we continue to make college possible for Denver students. Transformed lives and a strong community. On behalf of the Denver Scholarship Foundation, our Scholars and our Alumni, thank you for making our work possible.

Sincerely,

Nate Easley, Ph.D. Remberto Rivera Executive Director Denver Scholarship Foundation Executive Director Letter Our Guiding Principles

Each year, our promise reaches more students. We are grateful for our robust partnership with Denver Public Schools, and for generous Future Center Sponsors like United Launch Alliance, Comcast, Daniels Fund, LARRK Foundation, JPMorgan Chase & Company, Jay and Rose Phillips Foundation of Colorado, and the Piton Foundation.

Our Future Centers serve 20 DPS high schools and reach roughly 14,000 students and their families annually – nearly 100 percent of all DPS seniors. It’s this college-going culture we foster that has helped increase the number of DPS students enrolling in college immediately following graduation by 37 percent since 2007.

That’s our promise. We know that a postsecondary degree makes students’ dreams possible, and their education makes a stronger, economically vibrant community possible.
