Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B) Sunday 29 July 2018 Festa di San Lupo

My dear Brothers and Sisters, “There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God who is Father of all, through all and within all”, St Paul; reminds us in this Sunday’s reading from the letter to the Ephesians(4:1-6). We are reminded by this Sunday’s readings that God our Father generously feeds us as he fed the multitudes through Elisha with 24 loaves and as he fed the multitudes through Jesus at the feeding of the five thousand with five barley loaves and two fish. And now God the Father feeds the countless millions of people baptised into faith in Jesus Christ with bread and wine which, upon every Catholic altar in the world by words of consecration and the power of the Holy Spirit, become really, truly and substantially the Body and Blood of Christ. This truth is at the heart of my ministry here with you in West Preston. It is the very essence of what the children of our parish are being taught as they prepare to receive the Eucharist for the first time in September. This is the faith proclaimed by the saints throughout the ages, not least by St Lupus/St Loup/San Lupo whose feast our Italian community celebrate this weekend. San Lupo was born in about 395AD and died in 478AD and served 50 years as bishop of Troyes in France. He was a strong defender of our Catholic faith against heretics who sought to undermine it and against Attila the Hun and his barbarian hordes who sought to destroy it. He worked miracles in the name of Jesus during his earthly life and has continued to do so even since his death in 478AD. A small village near Benevento in southern Italy was named after him and devotion to San Lupo has been brought from there to West Preston with families who emigrated to Australia after World War Two. In 1831 a lady of the Di Palma family was healed through the intercession of San Lupo and her descendants live and flourish here in our parish of St Raphael, West Preston, and rejoice to celebrate their wonder- working Patron Saint. We give thanks that we are believers in the “one Lord, one faith, one baptism and one God”. We give thanks that we are fed constantly by Jesus in the Eucharist. We give thanks that Jesus hears the intercessions of Saints such as San Lupo, who heed the cries of the sick and suffering and plead for them in the court of our “God who is Father of all”.

With every prayer for God’s peace, grace and blessing be upon you, Fr Simon Grainger Pax et Gratia

JOKE FOR THE WEEK Time for a Smile    A Fun Look at Lotto THOUGHTS FROM POPE FRANCIS • Lotto is a tax on people who are not good at maths. Prayer is never in vain: it always brings forth • 'Please, God, give me the chance to prove that winning Lotto won't spoil me.' something new that, sooner or later, bears fruit. • Your chance of winning Lotto is only marginally    increased by buying a ticket. ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺
