DRAFT SECOND READING SPEECH HON WILL HODGMAN MP Constitution Amendment (House of Assembly Electoral Boundaries) Bill 2018 *check Hansard for delivery* I move – That the Constitution Amendment (House of Assembly Electoral Boundaries) Bill 2018 now be read for the second time. The Commonwealth recently reviewed the House of Representatives boundaries in Tasmania. This review was part of an independent redistribution of federal electoral boundaries, required under the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918. The previous redistribution of the federal electoral boundaries in Tasmania was completed in 2009. The redistribution of electoral boundaries usually reflects population changes to ensure an even and fair allocation of voters among the electorates. Having even electorates is an important element of retaining ‘fairness’ in our voting system and indeed our democracy. On 14 November 2017, the Commonwealth augmented Electoral Commission for Tasmania announced new boundaries for the federal electorates in Tasmania. The augmented Commission consisted of the three members of the Australian Electoral Commission, the Australian Electoral Officer for Tasmania, Mr David Molnar, the Surveyor-General of Tasmania, Mr Michael Giudici, and the Auditor-General of Tasmania, Mr Rod Whitehead. The augmented Commission also announced that the division of ‘Denison’ be renamed to the division of ‘Clark’. This name change recognises the role of Andrew Inglis Clark in the creation of the Australian Federation. The new name and boundary changes will apply from the next federal election. However, these Commonwealth changes do not automatically apply as State electoral boundaries in Tasmania. In the past, the Tasmanian Parliament has chosen to adopt the Commonwealth House of Representatives boundaries for the purposes of House of Assembly divisions by amending the Constitution Act 1934 to ensure they coincide. -

CLIMBING FEDERATION PEAK, SOUTH WEST TASMANIA Macquarie (University) Mountaineering Club trip 1972 By Barbara Cameron Smith June 5, 2014 Our anti clockwise route towards and up Federation Peak is depicted in orange above, with the exception of our detour off the loop to climb Burgess Bluff. We subsequently camped at Pineapple Flat, scrub bashed our way to Mount Picton, and eventually walked out to Blakes Opening along an unexpectedly civilized track. Map credit: Bill Filson 7 January 1972 We packed all our gear and then went shopping. We expect to be out for 7-10 days, and after packing the necessary food and excess, the food bill tallied 26 dollars for four, quite a lot of money. We went to local camping stores and got some extra equipment, then called in to chat with a few guys who could tell us something about the walk. We repacked everything after a counter lunch in a pub and off we went. We walked quite a way out of the main street of Hobart. Greg and I started hitching and were lucky, getting a lift with a guy who was going camping himself. I guess I was rather forward but I asked him if he’d mind picking up our two friends who were on the road already. He didn’t seem to mind, so we were all driven down to Geeveston. Had a few refreshments there and left details at the police station and gear at the council chambers. It was rather late to get a lift, it being 4.30 pm, but a local housewife drove all of us a few miles out of town. -

The mountain itself is named after its resemblance to a gold mining cradle. It has four named summits: In order of height: Cradle Mountain 1,545 mtrs (5,069 ft) Smithies Peak 1,527 mtrs (5,010 ft) Weindorfers Tower 1,459 mtrs (4,787 ft) Little Horn 1,355 mtrs (4,446 ft) When it was proposed to tackle Cradle Mountain on the 1st day of our week’s walking, Verna was heard to ponder the wisdom of such an attempt on the first day. As on a previous trip, when our group undertook to climb Mt Strzelecki on day one on Flinders Island, it took the remaining week to recover! Fortunately not many of our current party heard her. So off we set at 8.30am to climb to Kitchen Hut via the Horse Track around Crater Lake from our base at Waldheim Cabins (950 metres). It was not long into the walk when I, for one, was thankful to have gloves. -

Like children, each day they would ask me to repeat for them the description of that island where they would be happy. They began to imagine it vividly, obsessively. These are the last lines that you wrote. You cease to become an observer and in some ways you cease to exist. Everything becomes very simple. No joy, no pity, no terror. In May 2016, Contemporary Art Tasmania staff met with James Contemporary Art Tasmania. The germination of the exhibition, Newitt in lieu of a regular studio visit. His itinerant life between Delay and the film, I Go Further Under likely occurred here, and Hobart and Lisbon meant we had to sit around a laptop while he at that time, from the liberating flow and pull of the Derwent’s surfed video segments and provided insights to the interplay of southbound current. Later, when viewing The Rehearsal in with the public and official reaction to her perceived psychological its entirety, I was struck by an idea that I had somehow watched it withdrawal and apparent abandonment of humanity. -

The facts contained in Scott's paper are of value at the present time to those in search of information concerning the early history of the south-western portion of Tasmania, and as in years to come information may be desired concerning the condition of the south-western regi-on half a century after Scott's account was written, the writer desires to place on record certain brief general obser vations concerning this interesting area. The remarks made in the present instance are the out come of two brief visits to this area. In January, 1926, I visited the South Coast as far as New Harbour in my own yacht Telopea. Again, in January, 1927, at the kind invi tation of Mr. M. R. Freney, I visited the S-outh C-oast and Port Davey in the ketch Len'IUL (S. Purdon, Skipper). Messrs. P. B. Nye and F. Blake of the Mines Department were also members of this latter excursion. During the recent visit to this area we landed at Cox Bight, and camped for some days before walking across and rejoining our !boat at Port Davey. -

There have been major changes in the fire regime of southwestern Tasmania over the past 170 years. The fire regime has changed from an Aboriginal fire regime of frequent low-intensity fires in buttongrass moorland (mostly in spring and autumn) with only the occasional high-intensity forest fire, to the early European fire regime of frequent high-intensity fires in all vegetation types, to a regime of low to medium intensity buttongrass moorland fires and finally to the current regime of few fires. These changes in the fire regime resulted in major impacts to the region's fire-sensitive vegetation types during the early European period, while the current low fire frequency across much of southwestern Tasmania has resulted in a large proportion of the region's fire-adapted buttongrass moorland being classified as old-growth. These extensive areas of old-growth buttongrass moorland mean that the potential for another large-scale ecologically damaging wildfire is high and, to avoid this, it would be better to re-introduce a regime oflow-intensity fires into the region. E-mail: [email protected] (Received 1 March 2007; revision accepted 25 July 2007) Abstract–Darwin glass formed about 800,000 years ago in western Tasmania, Australia. Target rocks at Darwin crater are quartzites and slates (Siluro-Devonian, Eldon Group). Analyses show 2 groups of glass, Average group 1 is composed of: SiO2 (85%), Al2O3 (7.3%), TiO2 (0.05%), FeO (2.2%), MgO (0.9%), and K2O (1.8%). Group 2 has lower average SiO2 (81.1%) and higher average Al2O3 (8.2%). Group 2 is enriched in FeO (+1.5%), MgO (+1.3%) and Ni, Co, and Cr. Average Ni (416 ppm), Co (31 ppm), and Cr (162 ppm) in group 2 are beyond the range of sedimentary rocks. Glass and target rocks have concordant REE patterns (La/Lu = 5.9–10; Eu/Eu* = 0.55–0.65) and overlapping trace element abundances. 87Sr/86Sr ratios for the glasses (0.80778–0.81605) fall in the range (0.76481–1.1212) defined by the rock samples. ε-Nd results range from −13.57 to −15.86. Nd model ages range from 1.2–1.9 Ga (CHUR) and the glasses (1.2–1.5 Ga) fall within the range defined by the target samples.
