The facts contained in Scott's paper are of value at the present time to those in search of information concerning the early history of the south-western portion of Tasmania, and as in years to come information may be desired concerning the condition of the south-western regi-on half a century after Scott's account was written, the writer desires to place on record certain brief general obser vations concerning this interesting area. The remarks made in the present instance are the out come of two brief visits to this area. In January, 1926, I visited the South Coast as far as New Harbour in my own yacht Telopea. Again, in January, 1927, at the kind invi tation of Mr. M. R. Freney, I visited the S-outh C-oast and Port Davey in the ketch Len'IUL (S. Purdon, Skipper). Messrs. P. B. Nye and F. Blake of the Mines Department were also members of this latter excursion. During the recent visit to this area we landed at Cox Bight, and camped for some days before walking across and rejoining our !boat at Port Davey. -

In 1846, Swan Island’s lightkeeper, Robert Wettenhall, wrote in his journal: Christmas Day. The Children dressed the Cottage windows with flowers etc; we had a large plum pudding and salt mutton (could not afford to kill a sheep) cauliflower, peas, beans, kidney & broad do, potatoes, had drawn new potatoes upwards of a fortnight. Drank tea on Signal Hill & had cake, Mother read some tracts, children afterwards played at Kangaroo & hounds I smoked my Meerschaum and we returned home about 8 P.M. Light House had been lit about half an hour. -

ARCHER These books represent a major turning point in our understanding of marsupial evolution.For the firstPOSSUMS&OPOSSUMS time since Aide's review of 1964, the whole subject of the evolutionary relationships of marsupials is thoroughly overhauled.In the more than 50 contributions by 38 American and Australian authors, five new families and many new genera and species of American and Australian marsupials are described for the first time.Some of these descriptions represent the results of up to 15 years of collection, preparation and study.Many represent the "births" of extraordinarily distinctive types of marsupials that lived 55,000,000 years ago in Brazil, 15,000,000 years ago in the Miocene forests of what is now the Simpson Desert, approximately 15,000,000 years ago in the dense rainforests of what are now the steamy limestone plateaus of north Queensland and 4,500,000 years ago in the cool wet rainforests of western Victoria. While some give us important clues about how the modern faunas evolved, others represent bizarre experiments that faded from the world millions of years before Man evolved. Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 14, No. 1 (2018) After the Thylacine: In Pursuit of Cinematic and Literary Improvised Encounters with the Extinct Nicholas Chare Introduction: Tainted Evidence A coughing bark was one of its forms of vocal expression.1 Or, more precisely, coughing bark is how one of its forms of vocal expression has been styled, part- imitated, translated into words; circumscribed for the purposes of description, classification, possession and preservation. The coughing bark, carrying under- tones of canine sickness, refers to a non-human vocalisation, a vocalisation made by Thylacinus cynocephalus, otherwise known as the thylacine or the Tasmanian tiger. This non-human animal, a carnivorous marsupial, was officially declared extinct by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature in 1982. It was also acknowledged as extinct by the Tasmanian Government in 1986. Alt- hough the thylacine was once native to mainland Australia and Papua New Guinea it likely died out in those regions around 2000 years ago and the animal is therefore most associated with the island of Tasmania where a relictual popu- lation survived into the twentieth-century.2 The last officially recorded thylacine in Tasmania, commonly referred to as “Benjamin”, died at Hobart Zoo in 1936.3 Nicholas Chare is Associate Professor of Modern Art in the Department of History of Art and Film Studies at the Université de Montréal. He is the co-author (with Dominic Williams) of Matters of Testimony: Interpreting the Scrolls of Auschwitz (2016) and the author of After Francis Bacon: Synaesthesia and Sex in Paint (2012). He has also co-edited (with Ika Willis) a special issue of the journal parallax on the theme of Trans-: Across/Beyond (2016). -

Recommendations and Issues Arising 4.0 RECOMMENDATIONS & ISSUES ARISING 4.1 Introduction This final section briefly draws out conclusions arising from the descriptions and discussions of the World Heritage geoconservation values of the TWWHA that have been provided in Section (3.0). In most cases, issues are only briefly highlighted or dot-pointed in this section, so as to provide a simple "check list" of key issues arising. Section (3.0) (and references therein) should be referred to for background details of the various issues and recommendations listed here. 4.2 Recommended Additions to the TWWHA Based on Geoconservation Values, and Areas for Further Consideration All of the 21 new reserves adjoining the TWWHA, as listed and described in Section (3.3) above, contain features or systems contributing substantially to one of more of the recognised TWWHA World Heritage geodiversity themes (see Section 3.3), and hence they are all recommended for inclusion in an extended Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA) boundary on this basis. It is additionally recommended that the Hastings Caves State Reserve – which immediately adjoins the Hastings Cave reserve extension that is one of the 21 new reserves recommended for inclusion in the TWWHA - be also incorporated within the TWWHA boundary owing to its possession of dolomite karst systems that are physically continuous with, as well-developed, and more accessible than those contributing to the Karst World Heritage geoconservation themes within the existing (and now contiguous) Southwest National Park / TWWHA (see Section 3.4). Significantly, this proposal would also add an important ongoing hydrothermal karst system to the TWWHA (see Section 3.4), which is a karst process that is at present poorly represented within the TWWHA, yet is an important element of Tasmania's karst geodiversity. -

Two species of scincid lizard, both hitherto identified as Leiolopisma pretiosum, occur syntopically on Mt Wellington, near Hobart, Tasmania. One of these is conspecific with the holotype of Mocoa pretiosa O'Shaughnessy, 1874. while the other is conspecific with the holotype of Mocoa microlepidota O'Shaughnessy, 1874, which has been regarded as a synonym of L. pretiosum since 1887. The two species are redescribed as members of an endemic Tasmanian subgroup within the Australian radiation of the genus Leiolopisma (sensu Greer 1982). Leiolopisma microlepidotum is confined to disjunct alpine populations in the south and west of Tasmania. It differs from L. pretiosum in colour pattern, larger size and more robust, less depressed head and body. Aspects of the biology and ecology of these and other Tasmanian endemic Leiolopisma species are also discussed. Key Words: lizards, Scincidae, Leiolopisma, taxonomy, ecology, distribution. -

Tasmania: State of the islands Sally. L. Bryant Tasmanian Land Conservancy, PO Box 2112 Lower Sandy Bay, Tasmania 7005 Summary Tasmania’s offshore islands contain nationally and globally significant natural values, and some are recognised by World Heritage Area status. Many hold a range of highly restricted species and are genetic repositories and refugia for species threatened with extinction on mainland Tasmania or Australia. Tasmania’s islands are generally well reserved and due to improving knowledge, better technology and increasing volunteer support, alien species are now being controlled or eradicated with greater efficiency. By expanding the opportunities and role of stewardship programs, volunteers could help further by undertaking biosecurity surveillance and delivering badly needed baseline monitoring. A prioritisation process that ranked islands according to their conservation values would also help direct limited resources to those most in need of priority management. With emerging threats from sea level rise, invasive species and expanding coastal development, the protection of Tasmania’s islands has never been more urgent. Geography - Number, geomorphology and size Tasmania has over 6,500 islands, islets, rocky stacks and reefs scattered around its coastline, of which 5,890 have land above the high water mark (TASMAP 2006; Parsons 2011). There are 374 islands greater than one hectare in size and 65 islands greater than 20 hectares in size (DPIPWE 2011). On the northern boundary, Rodondo Island and West Moncoeur are less -

It contains information about National Estate values in Tasmania's forests. In the RFA process, 1996 was devoted largely to the collection and publication of information relating to the social and economic and environmental and heritage values of Tasmania's forests. The results of this process were published in November 1996 as the Public Land Use Commission's Background Reports Parts C and D. In September 1996 people and groups interested in the management of Tasmania's forests were invited to participate in the RFA integration process. To facilitate this process each interest group has been allocated a Commission-appointed 'mentor'. Participants are putting forward issues and questions that they have identified as needing particular attention as the RFA information is studied by governments. The next steps involve drawing together the various outcomes of the environment and heritage and social and economic studies and developing options that will satisfy the RFA objectives. The RFA integration process is being undertaken by a joint Project Team under the direction of the Tasmania-Commonwealth Steering Committee.
