Időközben a drogirodalom - a virtuális valóság korában, ahol életünk jelentős részét a számítógépek képemyójéről sugárzó mentális szimulációban, mesterséges hallucinációban töltjük - i.nterdiszciplínáris szakterületté vált, amelynek tanulmá- nyozása során irodalom-, művészet- & eleddig értelmezhetetlen- nek tetsző metarétegeit, a kollektív és fatális pilcnolepsziában képződő különböző valóságaink természetét tárhatjuk fel. SÓRÉ5 ZSOLT bevezető tanulmánya az altematív valóságok áttekintésének a szem- pontjait tárgyalja, MARCU5 BOON értekezésében a drogirodalom kérdésének szoros irodalomtörténeti korınolsációit veszi számba, SCOTI' ]. A SZERKESZTÓBIZOTTSÁG I-Iacked Realitíes Llıost culturcs, however varied regarding values, customs and conventiorıs, share the problem of iı-ug use. Dnıgs have come to play various roles in history, but drug abuse has always been a sig- iˇzarıt part of human life, providing psydıological and philosophical allegories for our ontological uobıeddedness into universal reality. As a syınptom of social estrangement, many have become addicted to drugs in all social classes s`ı:ııı:e the XVIII* century, due to urbanization, the loss of the vital spaces, the lack of honest human Hl:l:ˇl:ns. Drugs have gotten endowed with symbolic significance. It is worth analyzing how modem drug mırrs manipulate their emotiorıs, compensate their personal del'-iciencies, and ease ınental problems ırith the help of dopes. The drı.ıg revolution of the 196ûs was a counterculture event. lt aimed at expressirıg the poetics of a posible spiritual revolution, but was followed by a period of disillusion afterwards. The psyche- dıelic and dnıg revolution event-ually proved to be a dissolution of the personal ego: the experience of the real world could not have been replaced by artifical experience. ln the age of virtual reality, when we all spend most of our time in virtual sirnulatiorıs, artificial h.ılluci.nat-ions as they are reflected in the glow of the computer screen, the drug literature has be- coı:ne an interdisciplinary field of research, an area of study which might help us to discover the sı-eı:'ıi.ı-ıgly uninterpretable layers of the history of literatı.ıre, art and culture, and the way our realities ıre corıstituted in a collective and fatal picnolepsy. The introductory essay by ZSOLT SORES gives a general survey on altemative realilies, discussing iıs various aspects; MARCUS BOON deals with the connotations of the drug literature in literary his- IJIÍ-': SCOTI' J. TI-lOMP5ON's essay on Walter Benjamin and his mescaline experiments reveals some of the aesthetic presuppositions of the War on Drugs in the United States and Hitler's War on Drugs; HENRY FLYNT's study is considered with the pscychological and philosophical consequences of psy- chedelic experience in an introspective examination; CLAUDE LÉVI-STRAu§'s text is a classic example of etnomicology and cultural study that appears here for the forst time in Hungarian traslation. ln our "Worlshop" section the reader would find ZSOLT SóRÉ'5's discordian meditation about reality and conceptualism. Our issue on drug literature is edited by ZSOLT SŰRÉ5. • Michael Stevens' the Road to Interzone
“The scholarship surrounding the life and work of William Burroughs is in the midst of a renaissance. Students of Burroughs are turning away from myths, legends, and sensationalistic biographical detail in order to delve deeply into textual analysis, archival research, and explorations of literary and artistic history. Michael Stevens’ The Road to Interzone is an important part of this changing landscape. In a manner similar to Ralph Maud’s Charles Olson’s Reading, The Road to Interzone places the life and literature of “el Hombre Invisible” into sharper focus by listing and commenting on, in obsessive detail, the breadth of literary material Burroughs read, referred to, researched, and reviewed. Stevens reveals Burroughs to be a man of letters and of great learning, while simultaneously shedding light on the personal obsessions, pet theories, childhood favorites, and guilty pleasures, which make Burroughs such a unique and fascinating figure. Stevens’ book provides a wealth of new and important information for those deeply interested in Burroughs and will no doubt prove essential to future scholarship. Like Oliver Harris’ The Secret of Fascination and Robert Sobieszek’s Ports of Entry before it, The Road to Interzone is an indispensable addition to the canon of Burroughs Studies.” -Jed Birmingham “Michael Stevens has created a new kind of biography out of love for William S. Burroughs and love of books. Author worship and bibliophilia become one at the point of obsession, which of course is the point where they become interesting. Burroughs’ reading was intense and far flung, and Stevens has sleuthed out a portrait of that reading--the books Burroughs lent his name to in the form of introductions and blurbs, the books in his various libraries, the books he refers to, the books that found their way into his writing, and much more! Along with lively notes from Stevens, we have Burroughs throughout--his opinions, perceptions, the ‘grain of his voice.’ That in itself makes Stevens’ book a notable achievement.

  • The Americas in European Music Encyclopedias
The Americas in European Music Encyclopedias Part 1 ENGLAND (ANO SCOTLAND) Thomas Busby ( 1755-1838) compiled the first music lexicon reprinted in the United States, A Complete Dictionary of Mwic (Philadelphia: G.M. & W. Snider, 1827). Continental precedents would have permitted Busby's a1luding to American lndian music (Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 1768) or mentioning New World composers whose names were circulating in Europe by the 1790's (José Mazza). Busby did neither. lnstead his geographic biases permitted his snubbing even Spain, mother of American colonies. In the uxiv + 331-page "fourth edition with additions and improve· ments" of his A Dictionary of Mwic (London: Printed for Richanl Phillips, 1817), Busby offered these definitions (pages 45, 52, 246-247). CANARJES. 1ñe name of an old dance, of which we have a sample in PurceU's opera of Dioc/esian. lt is a sprightly air of two strains; the time, three quaven in a bar, the fll'St pointed. None of the foreign airs are distinguished by any name analogous to this; we have, therefore, rason to con clude that the Can aries is of English invention. CHACONN'E. (French.) An air, borrowed from the Arabians; the characteristic of whi<:h is a ground bas.s, consisting of four or eight measures of triple time of three crotchets, with its repetition to continuaUy varied melodies. 1ñe Chaconne somewhat resembles the Sarabande but is rather m<n grave, has the füst and last crotchet of every bar strongly accented, and was fonnerly used asan accompan:•.. ent to a certain dance, slow, and graceful in its movement.
