TUTORIAL PROGRAM The tutorial program for student-athletes at Tulane is one of the most comprehensive in Conference USA. The tutoring program is designed to supplement the knowledge that students gain in the classroom with direct one-on-one interaction with a tu- tor. Only the most qualifi ed tutors are hired to work with Tulane student-athletes, and any student-athlete can request a tutor for any course.

CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS Student-athletes are presented with many challenges in bal- ancing academics and athletics at the Division I level. To meet these challenges, the NCAA developed the CHAMPS/Life Skills program to assist universities with the preparation of their stu- dent-athletes for life beyond collegiate athletics. The CHAMPS/ Life Skills program helps bridge the gap between participating in intercollegiate athletics and experiencing campus life.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COUNCIL The Tulane Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) rep- resents the students’ concerns to the athletics administration and coordinates several of the Green Wave’s annual commu- nity service project. Made up of representatives from each of Tulane’s sports programs, the board meets monthly to discuss community service projects, campus outreach programs, and issues faced by Tulane University student-athletes.

SAAC encourages all varsity athletes to become involved in its programs, including coordinating the National Student-Ath- lete Celebration, planning the Varsity Ball, Tulane’s All-Sports Awards Banquet and organizing donation projects.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SERVICES Student-athletes at Tulane University are role models for youths in New Orleans. During the year, student-athletes undertake community service projects The primary objective of the Offi ce of Student-Athlete Services is to assist student-athletes in like participating in a mentoring program at a local school, visiting children in local hospitals their efforts to complete their degree requirements and to develop the skills necessary to be and working camps for underprivileged youths. productive citizens. The academic counselors within the Offi ce of Student-Athlete Support Services assist stu- dent-athletes in their pursuit of an undergraduate degree through the development and evalu- ation of their academic plans based upon educational and career objectives. Furthermore, the offi ce assists student-athletes in the clarifi cation of their life and career goals. The academic staff extends a caring, committed effort in helping students’ intellectual, cultural, physical and social development.

ACADEMIC ADVISING CENTER The Offi ce of Student-Athlete Support Services is located on the fi rst fl oor of the James W. Wilson Jr. Center. The suite houses an upgraded computer lab, the offi ces of the athletic academic counselors, and a quiet study area. The computer lab consists of 18 fully-equipped computers with several software programs, Internet access, and e-mail capabilities.

In addition to the computer lab and staff offi ces, a general study area allows student-athletes to study in a quiet and controlled environment.

ACADEMIC COUNSELING Advising Tulane student-athletes during their pursuit of an undergraduate degree is the single most important function of the Offi ce of Student-Athlete Support Services. The staff uses a collaborative approach that involves the student-athletes, department and college advisors, and the counselors of the Student-Athlete Support Services unit. Together, this group works to develop a unique plan of action for every Tulane student-athlete.

Each varsity at Tulane is assigned an academic counselor who understands the mission of Tulane University and the academic policies and philosophies that govern the University. Furthermore, the academic counselors provide accurate knowledge of university and college degree requirements, as well as NCAA standards. This knowledge includes an understanding of university and department academic courses, course content, and prerequisites needed for academic degrees.

Tulane’s athletic academic counselors also possess skills that allow for one-on-one counsel- ing. Student-athletes discuss their academic interests, personal needs and crisis situations with their counselors. If referrals to specialists are needed, Tulane’s athletics department works closely with on-campus counseling organizations that provide professional counseling on a confi dential basis.

With time-honored traditions, and a few unique to Tulane, Green Wave athletic Vars-uh, vars-uh, tee-ay! events feature a fan-friendly environment as well as a quality product on the fi eld. Tee-ay! Tee-ay! One of the most unique nicknames in college athletics came about almost by ac- Vars-uh, Vars-uh, tee-ay! cident. Although Tulane began playing intercollegiate football in 1893, from that time to 1919, the school’s athletics teams were known as the Olive and Blue. In Tulane!! 1919, the Tulane Weekly, one of Tulane’s many student newspapers at the time, began calling the football team the “Greenbacks.” The “Greenie” was adopted in 1955. It was created by John Chase, a local car- toonist who drew the covers of the Tulane football programs and those of many teams throughout the South. When Dr. Rix Yard became the athletic director in 1963, he felt Tulane needed a tougher symbol for its teams. Working with the manager of the Tulane bookstore, he arranged for a new mascot to be created. Several sketches were submitted and the angry-looking wave was adopted in 1964. The block “T” with waves be- came the Tulane athletics logo in 1986, and a mascot resembling the character “Gumby” was used. Tulane unveiled a new family of marks in August 1998. The new logos feature the use of a “T” with a modern “wave” as a primary mark. A new pelican mascot was introduced and given the name Riptide by a vote of Tulane students. In addition to the Fight Song, Tulane has what can arguably be called the most unique cheer in college athletics - “The Hullabaloo.” With its origins traced back to the 1800s, “The Hullabaloo” is a crowd favorite that can be heard after every Tulane score. In 2003, a group of Tulane students and supporters formed the school’s fi rst marching band in many years. This volunteer group has now given way to a new, university-supported marching band that– after taking a one-year hiatus – made its debut season in 2006 under the direction of Barry Spanier. The band greatly enhanced the game-day atmosphere and experience, joining with the Tulane cheerleaders and dance team, “Shock Wave”, to lead the crowd while exhibiting plenty of Green Wave spirit.

Westfeldt Facility Directly behind the James W. Wilson Center is the George C. “Sunny” Westfeldt Practice & Competition Facility. The facility is used by the track and fi eld and footbal teams for practice, and once women’s soccer returns in the fall of 2010, will play host to soccer matches. The Westfeldt Facility, which includes the recently refurbished Danny Thiel Track, is fully lit with a grandstand which comfortably seats 1,200 fans.

Over the summer of 2001, a new track was installed and in 2006, a new artifi cial surface was installed at the Westfeldt Facility. The surface allows for year-round practice in all weather conditions, and the track allows for year-round training for members of the Green Wave track team.

“This is an excellent facility,” Tulane track and fi eld head coach Heather Van Norman said. “It allows us to train at a level which will help us compete with the top teams in the nation. In addition, we can host various events here, from high school to collegiate meets.”

Tad Gormley Stadium Another recently renovated facility, is one of the premier track facilities in America.

Site of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials and the terminus of the Crescent City Classic road race, the stadium is a 26,500 permanent seat facility consisting of a 400-meter internationally marked polyurethane track, natural turf football or soccer fi eld, three locker rooms, press box with seating for 110, press suite with seating for 40, and electronic scoreboard and sound system. Adjacent to the stadium is the 400-meter, polyurethane Track.

Gormley has also played host to the 1993 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships and the 2000 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. It also hosts numerous collegiate and high school track and fi eld events each year.

Tad Gormley Stadium brings a special dimension of versa- tility to the City of New Orleans’ event staging capabilities. It is the perfect site for a broad range of outdoor athletic competitions, entertainment and corporate special events.

In addition to sporting events, Tad Gormley has hosted numerous performing artists including the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Jimmy Buffet.

The storied facility was built as a Works Progress Admin- istration project in the 1930s and was the site of the Sugar Bowl track meet for more than a generation.

NCAA REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Regional qualifying meets (four, two-day events) were added to the NCAA Track and Field Championship structure in 2003, placing greater emphasis on the conference champion- ships. dramatically increasing the fi eld sizes for the NCAA Championships and pushing the national meet back one day. Contestants at the national championships will be determined by a combination of automatic qualifyiers from the regional meets based on fi nish, and at-large qualifi ers based on the descending-order lists from the regular season and regionals. The only events not included in the advancement procedure would be decathlon, heptathlon, and the 10,000-meter run. Those events will not be included in the regional meets, and competitors will continue to qualify for the national championships by meeting a predetermined standard. The top fi ve fi nishers in each individual event and the top three teams in each relay event from each of the four regions will advance to the nationals. The fi elds, expected to be about 26 for each individual event and 17 teams in each relay, will then be completed by selecting at large entrants. The Division I subcommittee will base its selections on the descending-order lists from all regular-season competition and the four regional meets. However, an athlete must compete in all events at a regional meet in which he or she wishes to remain eligible for an at-large spot to the national championships. To enhance the importance of regionals, team scoring will be compiled and champions recognized. “We believe this is a highly visible way to promote the team aspect of track and fi eld, as well as develop some regional rivalries that currently do not exist because of conference afi liations,” said Mark Bockalman, NCAA Director of championships and liaison to the Division I track and fi eld subcommittee.
