    30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. Additional territories sold by IFT include California for Latin America, Dutch Filmworks for Benelux, Defiant Screen for Australia, Leone for Italy, Joy N Cinema for South Korea and Tanweer for Greece. The U.S. and U.K. deals were brokered by Lauren Bixby of Lionsgate, which will release the film as a multi-platform title. Michael Benaroya and Christian De Gallegos on behalf of the filmmakers. The Canadian rights were brokered by Kevin DeWalt for Minds Eye Entertainment. With the participation of the province of British Columbia’s Film Incentive BC, production was made possible through the Creative Saskatchewan Feature Film Production Grant Program and the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit. The film was shot in Kelowna, Quilchena, Kamloops, and Lavington, all in interior British Columbia, and is currently in post-production in Saskatchewan. Kevin Durand, Famke Janssen, and Tyrese Gibson also star. Mel Gibson plays a key supporting role. Other actors rounding out the cast include Canadian actors Brenda Bazinet (SHOOT THE MESSENGER), Ryan Robbins (“Sanctuary”), Brendan Fletcher (BRAVEN), Leanne Lapp (“iZombie”), Chad Rook (“Siren”) and Brock Morgan (“Cardinal”).

    How to format your Script Many screenwriting books specify formats that may not still be in general use today, or which contain directions that may be unnecessary. The following format tips are accurate and will result in your screenplay being formatted in the correct manner. These tips apply only to a spec script. A production script contains editing and camera directions (and scene numbers) all of which are only added after a script goes into production, and should not be included in a spec script, the purpose of which is only to present the basic story. How the story is interpreted on the screen is up to the director, not the writer. LENGTH: Ideally, a screenplay for a regular feature film for theatrical release or for television should be between 100 and 120 pages. DO NOT list a cast of characters before the first page of the script. And, DO NOT number the scenes. THERE ARE ONLY THREE ELEMENTS NECESSARY IN A SPEC SCRIPT: · THE SCENE HEADING (INTERIOR OR EXTERIOR, LOCATION, TIME) · THE VISUAL EXPOSITION (Only what you would see if you were watching the screen) · THE DIALOGUE (1) The Scene Heading sets the stage for the action and dialogue to follow. It tells us where the story is taking place, and the time of day. There are only two locations where this can happen, inside (INT) or outside (EXT). The specific location and geographic placement should be included as well. The scene heading is positioned on your first indent, one-and-a-half inches in from the left hand side of the page.

We hear a laugh from inside the studio, then applause and the band kicking in. The double doors burst open and JENNA, dressed as a fat old lady, LIZ, and a QUICK-CHANGE DRESSER enter the backstage chaos from the studio. In the background we see the STAGE MANAGER. STAGE MANAGER We’re back in two minutes! The dresser starts going to work on Jenna; tearing off a wig, casting aside props and jewelry. PETE is there. JENNA (to Liz) So are you gonna ask out the Head? Liz rolls her eyes. PETE The “Head”? LIZ There are these two MSNBC guys we keep seeing around. They just moved offices from New Jersey.
