How can one be glum when thumbing La Fontaine’s Fables, or Frank’s Lines of My Hand (well, perhaps)? Books endure, and so shall we. Te life-cycle of a book, especially an old one, is to pass in and out of love. Love impels the purchase, perhaps from the publisher himself or at a book fair or shop. Te book is treasured and perhaps shown off afer dinner or to a visiting friend. Te book is inherited, and it reminds the daughter of the father, happy memories flooding back unaided by tea-soaked cakes. Te book is inherited once again, and it is, luckily for us, ignored. Tis or the subsequent generations sell, and we the bibliopoles look for a new lover. Tat, hopefully, is you, dear reader. Or maybe it’s your own lover or a friend or a parent or a lover’s parent. Peruse and enjoy for yourself and for others. Tis set of one hundred books is a mixture of our perennial favorites and of favorites for the season. -

Am Beispiel der Reihe CH, CH2, CH3, CH.,, CH6, CHc wird gezeigt, daß die 4-Wertigkeit des C-Atoms sowohl die physikal. Stabilität des Mol. (CH5, CH0 sind vermutlich instabil wie He2) bedeutet als auch die Fähigkeit, durch einen Potential- Wall andere Atome vom Mol. fernzuhalten (was in CH, CH, u. CH3 nicht eintritt). In der Theorie von L e w is war für nichtpolare Moll, die Existenz von bindenden, paar weise auftretenden Elektronen u. völlig unbeteiligten Elektronen angenommen worden. Die Quantentheorie zeigt, daß außerdem noch „lockernde“ Elektronen (meistens paarweise) auftreten. ARMAMENTS FIRMS, THE STATE PROCUREMENT SYSTEM, AND THE NAVAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IN EDWARDIAN BRITAIN Professor Roger Lloyd-Jones History Department, Sheffield Hallam University Dr. Myrddin John Lewis History Department, Sheffield Hallam University This article examines the relationship between Britain’s armament firms and the state’s procurement system, presenting a case for a Naval Industrial Complex (NIC) in the years immediately before the Great War. It argues that in Edwardian Britain a nuanced set of institutional networks were established between the Admiralty and a small elite group of armament manufacturers. The NIC demonstrates the close collaboration between the armament firms supplying the Admiralty and between the Admiralty and an elite group of private contractors. This article concludes that the NIC did not lead to profiteering by contactors, and they did supply the warships and naval ordnance that enabled Britain to out build Germany in the naval race. This paper examines the relationship in Britain between the armaments industry and the military institutions of the state during the years preceding the Great War, when there were intensifying international tensions, and concerns over Britain’s defense capabilities. Through an assessment of the War Office (WO) and Admiralty procurement system, we apply John Kenneth Galbraith’s theory that businesses may establish institutional networks as “countervailing powers” to mediate business-state relations and, thus, we challenge the proposition that the state acted as a “monopsonist,” dominating contractual relations with private armaments firms.’ We argue that during the years prior to the war, Britain’s Naval Industrial Complex (MC) involved a strengthening collaboration between the British Admiralty and the big armament firms. -

The Baltic Goes to Washington: Lobbying for a Congressional Steamship Subsidy, 1852 Edward W. Sloan Trans-oceanic transportation by steam-powered vessels was still in its infancy as the nineteenth century reached its mid-point. As recently as 1838 many had still believed that a high-seas voyage under steam was limited at best to short distances. For a vessel to cross the Atlantic entirely under steam power was simply inconceivable. Then everything changed. The late April 1838 arrival in New York of not one but two British steamers — Sirius and Great Western — confounded the sceptics and ushered in a new age of trans• atlantic commerce and navigation.1 Yet steam at sea in that era was primitive, hazardous, unpredictable and expensive, and would remain so for several decades. The "maritime revolution in steam" was in fact a long and troublesome process.2 Moreover, steam power — such a remarkable innovation in the maritime world — like so many other major technological transformations, generated a formidable series of controversies in the realm of politics as well as in business and technology.3 The first successful transatlantic steam-powered liner operation was the British and North American Royal Steam Packet Company, or Cunard Line as it was called in recognition of its major promoter, the Canadian-born Samuel Cunard. The Cunard enter• prise was successful, in part, because its initial competitors all failed by the end of the 1840s. By that time the Cunard Line was approaching its tenth year of reliable if unexciting service between Liverpool and the North American ports of Halifax and Boston. -

Thomas Dover and the South Sea Company
THOMAS DOVER AND THE SOUTH SEA COMPANY by KENNETH DEWHURST* and REX DOUBLET** It is well known that Thomas Dover's career was one of the most colourful and varied of any British medical practitioner. He has been described erroneously as a "buccaneer",' a "mountebank"2 and a "pirate on the Spanish Main" :" all these labels do him ill justice and ignore the temper of his times. More accurately, he should be regarded as a "physician and merchant adventurer",' although the full extent of his ventures have not been fully revealed by his biographers. In medical circles he is now remembered as a pupil of Thomas Sydenham, and the originator of "Dover's powder", although in his own day, he was better known as the peppery "Quicksilver Doctor" and author of the best-selling remedy book The ancient physician's legacy. But medicine was only one of his claims to notice. As a ship's captain Dover made several voyages to West Africa and the Caribbean in the early days of the slave trade. Later he helped to finance, and played a leading role, in the most successful privateering voyage in British maritime history: it was during this voyage round the world that Dover rescued Alexander Selkirk whose singular adven- tures, it is said, provided Defoe with the germ of truth which he swelled into the great romance ofRobinson Crusoe. Later he sacked and ransomed the main Peruvian port of Guayaquil; but from a historical, rather than a medical point ofview, one of the most important interludes in his long life was his pioneering of British commercial interests in South America as the first President of the South Sea Company's "factory" or trading post in Buenos Aires. -
