Excellent historical account ...By Book SirenInspiring to the say the least ... similar genre to his prior books, and a very lucky young man to have endured so much under the watchful eyes of the Germans and Greek collaborationists. As other reviewers have said, this writing is pretty straightforward, but let's also not forget that he was there and lived it, unlike the countless others who write historical fiction for a living and are more proficient in the English language. Detailed writing of the training involved in the OSS' Cairo spy school is clearly written. Not many true accounts of the OSS' Secret Intelligence spy training, written by the same person, on that subject that I can recall.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Imagine the Terror: On a seemingly ordinary day in May, 1941, a boy from a tiny village in Crete faces an unexpected threat – the invasion of German troops. He runs for cover – his first escape in a series of encounters with destiny. Imagine the Adventure: The boy and his brother work for the SOE, an underground branch of the English Intelligence Service. When the resistance movement is uncovered, they quickly escape through the mountains of Crete, hiding from the enemy in broad daylight. Danger looms everywhere. Imagine the Glamour: The boy trains to be a spy for the OSS (the Office of Strategic Services), the SOE’s newly formed American intelligence counterpart. Imagine the Peril: While on his undercover mission in Salonica, the boy constantly risks his life, operating a wireless radio in plain view. Will the German police ever discover him? Imagine the Courage: If captured, the boy resolves to take a poison capsule that will quickly end his young life, rather than endure torture. Often, he finds himself seconds away from that dreaded event. Imagine the Victory of living to tell the tale at age 91… It’s all true! No imagination is necessary. This is the stuff of movies—a must-read story about the Game of Life. The author’s story, along with those of other agents, was featured in the documentary : Secret Agent School, a production by YAP Films, and was aired on HISTORY Channel in Canada and other networks worldwide.

"The author's memoir perfectly encapsulates the mixedfeelings of his younger self; he was only 20 when sent tothe city of Salonica, an event that was both exhilarating andterrifying. His flight from Greece, where he and others hid incaves, is an intense episode, as is his secret passage back intothe country. ... Treads familiar territory ... but readers new tohis work will enjoy the exciting life he's chosen to share." --Kirkus s"Helias Doundoulakis, now in his nineties, shares the storyof his time in the shadowy world of espionage in Trainedto Be an OSS Spy... There's really no sense of bragging inthe author's tone, and he is often generous in his praiseof others ... favoring a matter-of-fact, almost journalisticapproach to his narrative, rather than the glamorousmelodrama and egotism a reader might expect from a formerspy. Those who want to read about the authentic dangersand complications in the life of a World War II intelligenceoperative would do well to pick up Trained to Be an OSS Spy.It's a story they're not likely to find anywhere else." --Foreword Clarion "This engaging memoir by Helias Doundoulakis (with ghostwriter Gabriella Gafni), tells the gripping story of the author's time as an OSS spy during World War II.Doundoulakis was born in Canton, Ohio. His family moved to the Greek island of Crete when he was two years old. A teenager on Crete when German paratroopers leapt from the skies and occupied the island, he and his older brother, George, joined the . Betrayed by a collaborator, they fled to Egypt for their lives. There, both brothers joined the American OSS. Doundoulakis finished at the top of his spy class. Offered his choice of two assignments, the author chose to return to Crete as an SI (Special Intelligence) Operative rather than take a "safer" assignment in the Greek mainland mountains. An unvarnished, understated tale, full of youthful mistakes and narrow escapes, the book is written in a straightforward, conversational style. Readers can easily imagine sitting next to this modest, 93-year-old, decorated veteran as he relates a three-beer story about his harrowing escape to Egypt, his training by the OSS in Cairo, and his secret return to the island of Crete, where he took on the most dangerous spy mission of all: transmitting radio signals right under the Nazi's noses, while the searched for him. That he survived almost a year as an SI is nothing short of miraculous.Doundoulakis' memoir also includes a brief chapter at book's end about his post-war civilian life activities. This, naturally, falls flat in comparison to harrowing war stories. But that's a minor distraction. "You only live twice, once when you are born and once when you look death in the face," Japanese poet Matsuo Basho wrote more than 300 years ago. Doundoulakis skillfully conveys that sense of being fully alive, as he transmitted an amazing 400 clandestine radio signals as an OSS spy. This is a tale you are not likely to find elsewhere, one that rings with authenticity." --BlueInk From the Back CoverHelias Doundoulakis was only two years old when his family moved from America to the Greek island of Crete. He was twenty-two when the war ended in 1945, during which time he
