“Mercy vs. Law and Justice: A False Dichotomy” Speaker Series for St. Catherine Laboure Parish Glenview, Illinois March 12, 2017 † Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki Bishop of Springfield in Illinois My dear brothers and sisters in Christ: It is good to be back with you here at St. Catherine Laboure Parish, where I served as deacon from the summer of 1977 until my ordination as a priest in May of 1978. It is hard to believe that forty years have passed since then, but this parish and many of the parishioners still have a special place in my heart. The topic of my presentation is, “Mercy vs. Law and Justice: A False Dichotomy.” Specifically, I will address the questions: how can God be just and merciful at the same time? Can there be mercy without judgment? I will describe how a well-formed conscience enables us to experience God’s mercy. I will also look at how moral law, canon law or church law and civil law bind us and how they free us. 2 By way of introducing these themes, I start by recalling one of my favorite movies, “Shadowlands,” the 1993 film about the British author and Oxford University scholar C.S. Lewis, starring one of my favorite actors, Anthony Hopkins, who played the part of Lewis. After I saw that movie for the first time in the theater, I rented the video and did something that I had never done before and have never done since: I watched the video in my living room with a note pad and jotted down quotes from the profound theological insights that were being spoken by the character of Lewis in the movie, which was based on his real life experiences dealing with the terminal illness of his wife Joy, who was dying of cancer. -

10th Grade English Summer Reading Assignments First Assignment - Due June 25 Read The Magician’s Nephew by C. S. Lewis. Although The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was the first of the Narnia series to be published, Lewis preferred that the series be read according to Narnian history, with The Magician’s Nephew first and The Last Battle last. This book opens the Chronicles of Narnia, a series renowned in its genre and full of spiritual insight. For each major character, write a detailed paragraph describing that character, not just physically, but in personality, virtue or vice, etc. Write a plot synopsis including the major plot events. This should require a minimum of one legible handwritten page. On an additional page, note any characters or occurrences in the story that remind you of people or events in the Bible. Second Assignment - Due August 6 Read The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. Like The Magician’s Nephew, Tolkien’s The Hobbit introduces an extensive fantasy world as well as one of the most famous of fantasy tales. The Lord of the Rings trilogy would follow. As above, for each major character, write a detailed paragraph describing that character, not just physically, but in personality, virtue or vice, etc. Write a plot synopsis including the major plot events. This should require a minimum of one legible handwritten page. On an additional page, explain how Tolkien deals with the nature of courage in the character Bilbo, not a traditional heroic type. Please be aware that the movie version (two films so far) only covers a portion of the story and deviates from the original a great deal. -

BOOK BONES ! The Last Battle by C.S. Lewis ! Key Insights • The planetary influence in this novel is Saturn, a planet associated with age, weakness, decay, darkness, and death. Saturn exerts a bitter influence on the Earth, and tends to evoke two drastically different responses (“for bane or blessing”): 1) to abandon faith and hope in a Goodness beyond the evils of this world (the “Tash response”), or 2) to persevere and believe in spite of all evidence to the contrary (the “Aslan response”). • The influence of Saturn on the earth should lead good people to contemplate what is really true and really important; Saturn’s bitter wisdom should deepen their faith not destroy it. This points to the Christological significance of Saturn and the central theme of The Last Battle: the presence of Christ in human loneliness and suffering (“hope when all other lights have gone out”). • Ginger is an example of the first kind of response to Saturn, the response that loses faith in Aslan. Greeted with the idea that Aslan is “nothing more” than Tash, Ginger abandons his faith in anything divine and becomes a ringleader in the “Tashlan conspiracy.” King Tirian exemplifies the obedient response to Saturn: though he has temporary doubts about Aslan’s goodness, he perseveres in hope and acts as a good and faithful king of Narnia—even though there is very little evidence that Aslan cares about the plight of his people. • This novel differs from the others in many ways: an adult protagonist (makes the book older and more mature, like Saturn himself), no clear quest/objective, several narrow misses (“if only”); situation for the company gets continually worse, every hope frustrated by some unfortunate, unforeseen circumstance; far more characters die in this novel as well—every major character tastes death before the novel ends. -

Oray’s Publications Research Journal Of English(RJOE) Vol-3,Issue-4,2018 www.rjoe.co.in An International Peer-Reviewed English Journal ISSN: 2456-2696 Archetypal Approach Spins around C.S.Lewis’s the Chronicles of Narnia Dr.J.Sripadmadevi Assistant Professor Department of English (SF) Nirmala College for Women Coimbatore,Tamilnadu,India Abstract As archetypes are recurrent patterns in literature, they shine exuberantly in the genre of high fantasy, which derives much of its power from the archetypal models it incorporates with the subject matter; and The Chronicles of Narnia series is of no exception in this regard. They are finely embedded with the archetypal images such as light and darkness, sibling rivalry, tyrannical bullies, quest motif and character types. Albeit, the series has hooked up with various archetypal characteristics such as the theme of virtue conquers vice, it is the archetypal patterns in characters which have left a sturdy imprint to execute the thematic design of good versus evil in the entire plot structure. The intrinsic study of the series illustrates the infinite variety of experience of the dominant characters; wherein it reveals certain archetypal traits. Hence, the present paper explores on the variety of Archetypes in C.S.Lewis‟s The Chronicles of Narnia. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters. Author: Bob Wallace Eng C, HT 2009 Pages: 15 Abstract: The purpose of this essay is to identify the various sender/receiver pairs from C.S. Lewis’s novel The Screwtape Letters and, once identified, to examine these pairs within the context of the concept of a doctrine of universal values which is expressed in Lewis’s The Abolition of Man. For the sake of clarity and simplicity the essay begins with a definition of terms and concepts that will be used throughout, including basic terms used when discussing a communicative act: sender, receiver and message. I then explain the essays central concept which is taken from another one of Lewis’s works The Abolition of Man regarding a doctrine of objective value. The idea that a set of universal values exists is often central to secular writing and C.S Lewis, a Christian apologist, makes it clear that he believes that there exists an ethical way of living that is common to all men, Christian and non- Christian alike. He dubs this set of basic morals the Tao.
