OXFORD EXAMINATION SCHOOLS University of Oxford 1 OXFORD EXAMINATION SCHOOLS University of Oxford The existing Grade 2 Listed University of Oxford Examination Schools building suffered from a lack of DDA compliant access for disabled persons. The proposal took a redundant split level courtyard, squeezed between the Examination Schools and the Ruskin School of Art. Design Engine proposed a new two-storey naturally lit core, consisting of ramp, lift and WC facilities. This new entrance also offers disabled access links between both buildings, which neither had previously benefitted from. 2 3 4 Design Engine was appointed by Oxford University initially to carry out the integration of the Examinations Building and The Ruskin School of Art, both Listed Grade 2 which involved extensive re-modelling of an existing courtyard to provide new disabled access facilities to both buildings. The £ 1.4 million Phase 1 is complete, which involves a new combined entrance and respectful insertion of new access arrangements within the Grade ll Listed fabric and wider conservation area. Contracts were managed to minimise disruption to the academic year and to the crucial examinations process. 5 OXFORD EXAMINATION SCHOOLS University of Oxford Project Details Project Team Location Client High Street, Oxford University of Oxford Completion Date Architect 2007 Design Engine Contract Value Structural Engineer £1.2m Young and Webb Area Building Services Engineer 600 sqm Sharpe Consulting Engineers Per sqm Cost £2000/sqm Quantity Surveyor Clarus Consulting Specification Writer Design Engine CDMC Clarus Consulting Building Control Approved Inspector Oxford City Council Main Contractor Knowles & Son (Oxford) 6 7 Design Engine Architects Ltd The Studio, Coker Close Winchester SO22 5FF T.+44(0)1962 890111 F.+44(0)1962 890222 www.designengine.co.uk 8.
