Chosen by God : the Female Itinerants of Early Primitive Methodism : E. Dorothy Graham A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Arts of the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY E. Dorothy Graham AUTHOR’S NOTE When reading this thesis it is as well to remember that it was written 25 years ago and that styles of presentation and type have changed over time. Further information has been gleaned resulting in some of the original observations and comments needing to be up-dated. In addition there are several important points to be noted. 1. The Wesley Historical Society Library is now located in The Oxford Centre for Methodism and Church History, Oxford Westminster Institute of Education, Oxford Brookes University, Harcourt Hill, Oxford OX2 9AT. [ www.wesleyhistoricalsociety.org.uk] 2. More information relating to some of the female travelling preachers has come to light, so the original Biographical and Additional Biographical Appendix is no longer included within the thesis. Readers are advised to follow the web-link to Chosen by God: A list of the Female Travelling Preachers of Early Primitive Methodism (Graham, E. Dorothy, 2010, Wesley Historical Society, Evesham) which is given after the Appendices. E. THE NEVILLES AND THE POLITICAL ESTABLISHMENT IN NORTH- EASTERN ENGLAND, 1377-1413 Mark Edward Arvanigian The copyright of this thesis rests with the author. No quotation from it should be published without the written consent of the author an information derived from it should be acknowledged. 1 7 JAN 2000 Submitted for the degree of Ph.D., University of Durham, 1998. Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to uncover the nature of landed society in the North- East, and the creation of a new political matrix there from c.1377-1413. It will trace the development of a Lancastrian North-East, and the role played by the Neville family and other members of the region's elite in it. The Nevilles were instrumental in Henry IV's rise to power, and became the focal point of his subsequent efforts to stabilise the North. Much of their influence in later generations was the result of the political successes of Ralph Neville, first earl of Westmorland, and his rise to prominence in this period was the direct result of his Lancastrian associations. His career will therefore be closely considered. However, other members of the North-east's political community also rose to prominence in this period. Most notable among these was Sir Ralph Eure, a Durham knight of considerable ability who became perhaps the most important political figure below comital rank in the region. In overseeing the running of the palatinate of Durham, and holding the office of sheriff and numerous other commissions in the counties of Yorkshire and Northumberland, Eure ensured great continuity and competence in the northern administration, and eased the transition from Ricardian to Lancastrian regimes in this most unstable of regions.

The Borough and Town of Berwick-upon-Tweed has ever occupied an important and, in some respects, a unique position, having- been a bone of contention for many generations between the Kings of England and Scotland. Its status, defined by a Charter granted 30th April, 1604, by James I., and confirmed by Act of Parliament the same year, was reformed in 1835, when the place for all intents and purposes became a Northumbrian Town. The right to return two Burgesses to Parliament, which Berwick retained until 1881, the natural advantages of its position, and the enterprise and business habits of its townsmen united to assure to the Town great commercial prosperity. Evidences of this are apparent to the traveller from the south, whose eye is attracted by the red roofs and massive walls of warehouses and other buildings rising tier upon tier from the river's edge to the top of the bank or terrace upon which the Town is built.
