Byers 1 Karolyn Byers Professor Fülöp History of Film Music 21 December 2012 John Williams v. Alexandre Desplat: Approaches to Film Scoring for the Harry Potter Series I. Introduction The eightfilm series based on the Harry Potter novels by J.K. Rowling includes compositions by four different composers. Beginning with John Williams in 2001, the Harry Potter films over the years have also been scored by composers Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper and Alexandre Desplat.1 The composers use different approaches to the film score and seek different levels of interaction between the music and film. In order to understand how Desplat and Williams each contribute something unique for their respective films, this paper will primarily focus on the music from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and the differing approaches and styles undertaken by composers Williams and Desplat. The techniques of the two composers vary immensely. John Williams is widely recognized as one of the greatest film composers in the last forty years; his music has gained him international fame and he greatly increased the popularity of film music with his strikingly memorable themes.2 His compositional style primarily reinforces ideas that are seen on screen, while Alexandre Desplat is a bit more subtle with his scoring. Rather than doubling the action on screen, Desplat displays emotions or actions that are not necessarily portrayed by anything visually. However, since Williams composed music for the first three films, he established certain motives and themes that 1 John Williams composed the music for the first three films.

Jerald Ainsworth Dean of the College of Arts and Dean of the Graduate School Sciences NEW DIRECTIONS IN THE RHIZOME OF CHILDREN’S LITERATURE AND CHILDREN’S CULTURE: A CASE STUDY IN TRANSMEDIA STORYTELLING By KaTosha O’Daniel A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree of Master’s of English The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Chattanooga, TN May 2013 ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines the changing idea of what constitutes a “text” in twenty-first century children’s literature and children’s culture. Beginning with John Newbery’s A Little Pretty Pocket-Book (1744), through the Golden Age of Children’s Literature—that of the 1860s to 1900—and as a result of the shift to a children’s culture in the 1950s onward, my project interrogates the historical rhizome of children’s literature and children’s culture. The historical rhizome, which serves as the framework for this thesis, indicates the emergence of a fourth branch in the rhizome in our current epistemic mutation to the digitized text. Using J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series as a case study, this thesis illuminates the ways Rowling’s texts can be used as a model to follow in the historical rhizome due to her twenty-first century awareness of audience and text.

  • The Gothicization of the Harry Potter Series
The Gothicization of the Harry Potter Series By Antonio Sanna Spring 2011 Issue of KINEMA THE GOTHICIZATION OF THE HARRY POTTER SERIES: THE PROGRESSIVE TRANSPOSITION OF THE GOTHIC INTO THE FILMS Abstract In this paper I shall argue that the Harry Potter cinematographic adaptations of J. K. Rowling’s novels gradually enacts a transgeneric crossing of the Gothic into the genre of the fantastic. Specifically, by utilizing Robert Mighall’s argument that the ”Gothic is a process, not an essence; a rhetoric rather than a store of universal symbols”, I shall argue that such a transposition is progressively achieved by means of the representation of an imagery clearly recalling Gothic settings, figures and atmospheres, and through the use of a series of thematic preoccupations that are usually present in Gothic texts. According to the critic Robert Mighall, ”The Gothic is a process, not an essence; a rhetoric rather than a store of universal symbols; an attitude to the past and the present, not a free floating fantasy world. Epochs, institutions, places, and people are Gothicized, have the Gothic thrust upon them” (xxvi). This paper shall consider the Gothic as a discursive site which absorbs and infiltrates other genres, and shall specifically suggest that the story of Harry Potter becomes Gothicized because of its representation of many settings, characters and themes as evidently Gothic. J. K. Rowling’s narrative certainly belongs to the literary genre of the fantastic, a genre which shares some of its thematic concerns and structural characteristics with the Gothic. Indeed, both genres imply the existence of uncanny or supernatural events that transgress the bounds of reality and possibility and that cannot be categorized and explained with real scientific laws (Todorov 25).

CIN EM ATIC BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE MUSIC SAT 30 NOV 2019 CONCERT HALL, QPAC PROGRAM | CINEMATIC I WELCOME In my work as a bassoonist with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, I get to play all sorts of music. There are the great classic masterpieces by composers including Mozart, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky; there are famous ballets and operas; and then there is a concert like this one featuring some of the greatest movie music of all time. Every style of music touches us in different ways, however the common thread is the emotions it evokes in us and the imagination it sparks. Music allows us the space to create wonderful new worlds in our ever-increasingly busy minds. Movie music brings the visual and the auditory experience together in perfect harmony (pardon the pun!). A lot of the music we are performing tonight will take you back in time. I grew up watching many of these movies and the music brings back some fond childhood memories. Like watching the first Star Wars movie with my brother and sisters, on the couch, in my pyjamas, eating popcorn and desperately wanting long hair (I had short hair at the time) so I could look like Princess Leia! Tonight we're playing the memorable musical sounds of Star Wars and Back to the Future to name a couple. But we're also playing the music of my own children's growing years – How to Train Your Dragon and The Incredibles. There is a great deal of nostalgia and emotion mixed up in this music and I hope you adore listening to it as much as we love playing it.
