Half a billion years ago, the formation of “Herkimer Diamonds,” or as many experts know them as “Little Falls Diamonds,” began. The limy sediments that accumulated in the salty waters of an ancient sea were slowly and gradually compacted under the weight of thousands of feet of sediments, and rock strata were formed over time. Herkimer County becomes the center of the Irish Music world, While the strata were still under the surface of the sea, as the Great American Irish Festival brings the best of the water seeped through the pores of the rock, creating Emerald Isle to the Herkimer County Fairgrounds on the last eroded spaces known as “vugs.” Millions of years later, full weekend in July. These are unique nature-faceted quartz crystals with points at both ends. Historically prized as decorations or used in jewelry, these gems have become increasingly known for being metaphysically beneficial. Some have even dubbed the diamonds “dream rocks” and claim that sleeping with one in your pillow will enhance your dreams; others use them for therapeutic purposes. The Southern Adirondack Trail is one hundred and twelve (112) miles of scenic beauty along routes 8 and 28 in Hamilton and Herkimer Counties. The trail winds through the Southern Adirondacks, and the Herkimer County communities of Cold Brook, Poland, Newport, Middleville, Fairfield, Salisbury, Salisbury Center, Dolgeville, Little Falls, and Herkimer. History, nature, outdoor sports, geology, botany and even a haunted castle are just some of the things to explore as you wind your way through the scenic hills and valleys. There are nineteen structures and/or buildings on the National Register along the Southern Adirondack Trail. The trail begins in Little Falls just off New York’s State Thruway exit 29A at the General Herkimer State Historic Site. The site pays homage to Herkimer County’s namesake and Revolutionary War hero, General , a wealthy farmer who built his Georgian-style mansion in 1764. The home still stands as grand as it was more than 200 years ago, with many period furnishings and a landscape that is remarkably unchanged from the days when General Herkimer lived there. Another historic home, that some claim still houses one of its previous owners is Beardslee Castle (pictured above). Located on Route 5 just east of Little Falls, Beardslee Castle is patterned on an Irish castle and has a long and interesting history. Its latest incarnation is as a restaurant and banquet hall. But beware; you may have an extra guest in your party if the ghost that purportedly haunts the building decides to join you! Whether you believe in ghosts or not it’s a place you don’t want to miss. Back in the city, on Moss Island there are remnants of the last ice age - deep holes in the solid rock called potholes. Pot holes were formed by the swirling waters of melting glaciers that scoured smooth sided holes deep into the bedrock. As you explore be on the lookout for “Little Falls Diamonds” that can be found among rock outcroppings. Excellent examples of these unique crystals are on display at the Public Library and Little Falls Historical Society Museum.

Patriot General Nicholas Herkimer grew up in our very own Mohawk Valley. When General Herkimer learned the British had taken in July 1977, he called the largely immigrant German county militia to gather at (now Herkimer, NY) to begin the 40-mile westward march to the besieged Stanwix. While en route, a mixed party of British regulars and Mohawk Indians launched an ambush known as the , during which General Herkimer was wounded. He was said to have propped himself against a tree and rally his men to avoid retreat. When they departed the field, they transported General Herkimer to his home, where he endured the amputation of his leg, only to die of complications from the operation 10 days later. His home is now a state historic park and the town of Herkimer and Herkimer County, were named in his memory.
