But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy. -

Raquel Caerols Mateo Alejandro Tapia Frade1 Resumen Introducirse en la enseñanza del lenguaje visual y en la narrativa audiovisual como hecho específico del lenguaje cinematográfico supone indagar y estudiar aquel material que ha marcado un giro en la forma de decir del cine, este es el caso de Orson Welles y Ciudadano Kane (Citizen Kane, Orson Welles, 1941). Trabajar en el aprendizaje de esta materia no es hacer una historia del cine, —centrándose en aquellos que inauguraron una nueva corriente o tendencia—, sino realizar bosquejos en la función expresiva de los elementos que conforman un lenguaje audiovisual, en el por qué y significación de los mismos, pues es lo que constituye un aprendizaje significativo. Pero si además lo hacemos con un visionado conjunto con RKO 281 La batalla por Ciudadano Kane (RKO 281: The Battle Over Citizen Kane, Benjamin Ross, 1999) nos encontramos con la oportunidad de indagar, además, sobre la creatividad, sus procesos y las claves que hicieron de Ciudadano Kane una obra significativamente creativa. -

Peter and Irene’s anniversary celebration in Palm Springs is off to a rocky start, but they are looking forward to a nice meal in a local restaurant. It’s just their luck to be served (or not) by a perfectionist waiter who won’t bring them their food and has them questioning everything – from their menu selections to the state of their marriage. Wendy MacLeod’s play The House of Yes became an award-winning Miramax film starring Parker Posey. Her other plays include Sin (The Goodman, Second Stage), Schoolgirl Figure (The Goodman Theatre), The Water Children and Juvenilia (Playwrights Horizons), and Things Being What They Are (Seattle Repertory Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre). I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007. -

PAUL J BRADY Writer/Director/Producer PAUL BRADY Writer/Director/Producer A BIT ABOUT ME I come from a traditional design background, drawing and sketching. I got into this business with my first job working at Icon Productions. I was handed a script by producer Steve McEevety (Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ) and asked to come up with the look and feel of the picture. And that was my start. Ever since then I knew the film business is where I wanted spend my life working. Everyone wants to write and direct but I knew this wasn’t going to happen right away, so I started work in the art department in film and TV. Here, I figured it was a good place to start in finding out how the cogs of the film machine worked. It also gave me a chance to work in an area that was second nature to me. I haven’t had any formal training in college so the film set became my college. Learning from people who’ve been in the business all their lives. I’ve been very fortunate working on some of the greatest movies and TV shows, Penny Dreadful, Ripper Street, Calvary and Brookyln among others. Janey Mary was my first successful film as a writer and director adaptating the script from the best loved short story. It was a big production working with some of the most experienced industry professionals. It went on to win 5 top awards, including the Hollywood Discovery Award at the Hollywood Film Festival. Since then I’ve gone on to write and direct short films, documentaries and commericals, later writing feature films ‘Campus Caller’ and ‘Before I Wake’ for Odyssey Media.
