This relationship has also informed superhero comics themselves – going all the way back to Superman’s debut in Action Comics 1 (June 1938). As DC President Paul Levitz says of the development of the superhero: ‘There was an enormous desire to see social justice, a rectifying of corruption. Superman was a fulfillment of a pent-up passion for the heroic solution’ (quoted in Poniewozik 2002: 57). How Ninja Conquered the World THE TIMELINE OF SHINOBI POP CULTURE’S WORLDWIDE EXPLOSION Version 1.3 ©Keith J. Rainville, 2020 How did insular Japan’s homegrown hooded set go from local legend to the most marketable character archetype in the world by the mid-1980s? VN connects the dots below, but before diving in, please keep a few things in mind: • This timeline is a ‘warts and all’ look at a massive pop-culture phenomenon — meaning there are good movies and bad, legit masters and total frauds, excellence and exploitation. It ALL has to be recognized to get a complete picture of why the craze caught fire and how it engineered its own glass ceiling. Nothing is being ranked, no one is being endorsed, no one is being attacked. • This is NOT TO SCALE, the space between months and years isn’t literal, it’s a more anecdotal portrait of an evolving phenomenon. • It’s USA-centric, as that’s where VN originates and where I lived the craze myself. Schurken im Batman-Universum Dieser Artikel beschäftigt sich mit den Gegenspielern der Comic-Figur ¹Batmanª. Die einzelnen Figuren werden in alphabetischer Reihenfolge vorgestellt. Dieser Artikel konzentriert sich dabei auf die weniger bekannten Charaktere. Die bekannteren Batman-Antagonisten wie z.B. der Joker oder der Riddler, die als Ikonen der Popkultur Verankerung im kollektiven Gedächtnis gefunden haben, werden in jeweils eigenen Artikeln vorgestellt; in diesem Sammelartikel werden sie nur namentlich gelistet, und durch Links wird auf die jeweiligen Einzelartikel verwiesen. 1 Gegner Batmans im Laufe der Jahrzehnte Die Gesamtheit der (wiederkehrenden) Gegenspieler eines Comic-Helden wird im Fachjargon auch als sogenannte ¹Schurken-Galerieª bezeichnet. Batmans Schurkengalerie gilt gemeinhin als die bekannteste Riege von Antagonisten, die das Medium Comic dem Protagonisten einer Reihe entgegengestellt hat. Auffällig ist dabei zunächst die Vielgestaltigkeit von Batmans Gegenspielern. Unter diesen finden sich die berüchtigten ¹geisteskranken Kriminellenª einerseits, die in erster Linie mit der Figur assoziiert werden, darüber hinaus aber auch zahlreiche ¹konventionelleª Widersacher, die sehr realistisch und daher durchaus glaubhaft sind, wie etwa Straûenschläger, Jugendbanden, Drogenschieber oder Mafiosi. Abseits davon gibt es auch eine Reihe äuûerst unwahrscheinlicher Figuren, wie auûerirdische Welteroberer oder extradimensionale Zauberwesen, die mithin aber selten geworden sind. In den frühesten Batman-Geschichten der 1930er und 1940er Jahre bekam es der Held häufig mit verrückten Wissenschaftlern und Gangstern zu tun, die in ihrem Auftreten und Handeln den Flair der Mobster der Prohibitionszeit atmeten. Frühe wiederkehrende Gegenspieler waren Doctor Death, Professor Hugo Strange und der vampiristische Monk. Die Schurken der 1940er Jahre bilden den harten Kern von Batmans Schurkengalerie: die Figuren dieser Zeit waren vor allem durch die Abenteuer von Dick Tracy inspiriert, der es mit grotesk entstellten Bösewichten zu tun hatte. -

Journal of Lesbian Studies Special Issue on Lesbians and Comics Edited by Michelle Ann Abate, Karly Marie Grice, and Christine N. Stamper In examples ranging from Trina Robbins’s “Sandy Comes Out” in the first issue of Wimmen’s Comix (1972) and Alison Bechdel’s Dykes to Watch Out For series (1986 – 2005) to Diane DiMassa's Hothead Paisan (1991 – 1996) and the recent reboot of DC’s Batwoman (2006 - present), comics have been an important locus of lesbian identity, community, and politics for generations. Accordingly, this special issue will explore the intersection of lesbians and comics. What role have comics played in the cultural construction, social visibility, and political advocacy of same-sex female attraction and identity? Likewise, how have these features changed over time? What is the relationship between lesbian comics and queer comics? In what ways does lesbian identity differ from queer female identity in comics, and what role has the medium played in establishing this distinction as well as blurring, reinforcing, or policing it? Discussions of comics from all eras, countries, and styles are welcome. Likewise, we encourage examinations of comics from not simply literary, artistic, and visual perspectives, but from social, economic, educational, and political angles as well. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: Comics as a locus of representation for lesbian identity, community, and sexuality Analysis of titles featuring lesbian plots, characters, and themes, such as Ariel Schrag’s The High School Chronicles strips,
