  • Movie Review: ‘Creed II’
Movie Review: ‘Creed II’ NEW YORK — Moviegoers under 33 take note: You had yet to be born when “Rocky IV,” the 1985 film that hovers in the background of the sports drama “Creed II” (MGM), was released. While viewers of any age will know what to expect from this latest extension of the durable franchise long before they buy a ticket, the tried and true, against-the-odds formula still works somehow. Early on in this chapter of the saga, Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), with the help of his hard-driving trainer, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), wins the world heavyweight championship. He also proposes to his live-in girlfriend, Bianca (Tessa Thompson), a singer who suffers from hearing loss. But the rise of Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), a rival Adonis feels compelled to take on, sets up an emotionally fraught match since the up-and-comer’s father and coach, Ivan (Dolph Lundgren), is the Russian fighter whose blows killed Adonis’ dad, Apollo, back in the Reagan era. (Rocky subsequently fought and beat Ivan.) Rocky continues to feel remorse over his opponent-turned-ally Apollo’s death and urges Adonis not to accept Viktor’s challenge, a stance that threatens to cause a breach in their close relationship. It’s a conflict Rocky can ill afford since the death of his wife and alienation from his son have left him emotionally isolated. He can still count on the loyal friendship of Apollo’s widow and Adonis’ adoptive mom, Mary Anne (Phylicia Rashad), however. Working from a script Stallone co-wrote with Juel Taylor, director Steven Caple Jr.

  • Jack Kirby Influence Paper-2
Magi Hossameldin Professor Thelma Bauer Digital Media Foundations- D304 8:00 - 11:20AM Class December, 18th 2018 Jack Kirby-The Real Unknown Hero Often praised as the “King of Comics”, Jack Kirby has influenced generations of comic book artists and writers alike. Not only a talented comic book artist, he was also a great storyteller, which is considered to be responsible for his success and longevity. Kirby’s influence can still be seen in any modern superhero comics, and even on the big screen. Kirby is responsible for creating many iconic and beloved comic book characters. Jack Kirby was born as Jacob Kurtzberg on August 28, 1917, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City. From and early childhood, Kirby aspired to be a storyteller, having being influenced by the stories his mother told him, and the stories in the newspaper comics and in the movie theaters. As a self-taught artist, he started drawing cartoons for the newspaper of the Boys Brotherhood Republic. By the age of 14, he was enrolled in Pratt Institute, but dropped out the afternoon of his first day due to financial pressures. He worked at various studios before starting his career as a super-hero comic book artist. Kirby didn’t begin his career in comics but in the animated cartoons, namely Popeye cartoons at the Max Fleischer studios. He began working at Lincoln Newspaper Syndicate as a political, gag, and strip cartoonist. Through work, he met Joe Simon, and formed a team. In 1940, they were hired by Timely Comics Company, which is known in the present as Marvel Comics.

‘Yes, But What Have You Done for Me Lately?’: Intersections of Intellectual Property, Work-for-Hire, and The Struggle of the Creative Precariat in the American Comic Book Industry © 2019 By Ora Charles McWilliams Submitted to the graduate degree program in American Studies and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Co-Chair: Ben Chappell Co-Chair: Elizabeth Esch Henry Bial Germaine Halegoua Joo Ok Kim Date Defended: 10 May, 2019 ii The dissertation committee for Ora Charles McWilliams certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: ‘Yes, But What Have You Done for Me Lately?’: Intersections of Intellectual Property, Work-for-Hire, and The Struggle of the Creative Precariat in the American Comic Book Industry Co-Chair: Ben Chappell Co-Chair: Elizabeth Esch Date Approved: 24 May 2019 iii Abstract The comic book industry has significant challenges with intellectual property rights. Comic books have rarely been treated as a serious art form or cultural phenomenon. It used to be that creating a comic book would be considered shameful or something done only as side work. Beginning in the 1990s, some comic creators were able to leverage enough cultural capital to influence more media. In the post-9/11 world, generic elements of superheroes began to resonate with audiences; superheroes fight against injustices and are able to confront the evils in today’s America. This has created a billion dollar, Oscar-award-winning industry of superhero movies, as well as allowed created comic book careers for artists and writers.

Radiant Beings: Narratives of Contamination and Mutation in Literatures of the Anthropocene Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kristin Michelle Ferebee Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2019 Dissertation Committee Dr. Thomas S. Davis, Advisor Dr. Jared Gardner Dr. Brian McHale Dr. Rebekah Sheldon 1 Copyrighted by Kristin Michelle Ferebee 2019 2 Abstract The Anthropocene era— a term put forward to differentiate the timespan in which human activity has left a geological mark on the Earth, and which is most often now applied to what J.R. McNeill labels the post-1945 “Great Acceleration”— has seen a proliferation of narratives that center around questions of radioactive, toxic, and other bodily contamination and this contamination’s potential effects. Across literature, memoir, comics, television, and film, these narratives play out the cultural anxieties of a world that is itself increasingly figured as contaminated. In this dissertation, I read examples of these narratives as suggesting that behind these anxieties lies a more central anxiety concerning the sustainability of Western liberal humanism and its foundational human figure. Without celebrating contamination, I argue that the very concept of what it means to be “contaminated” must be rethought, as representations of the contaminated body shape and shaped by a nervous policing of what counts as “human.” To this end, I offer a strategy of posthuman/ist reading that draws on new materialist approaches from the Environmental Humanities, and mobilize this strategy to highlight the ways in which narratives of contamination from Marvel Comics to memoir are already rejecting the problematic ideology of the human and envisioning what might come next.

  • New Jersey Mercury Task Force Report Volume II Exposure and Impacts
New Jersey Mercury Task Force Report Volume II Exposure and Impacts January, 2002 New Jersey Mercury Task Force Donald T. DiFrancesco Robert C. Shinn, Jr. Acting Governor Commissioner 2 State of New Jersey Christine Todd Whitman Department of Environmental Protection Robert C. Shinn, Jr. Governor Commissioner Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner’s Office 401 East State Street, 7th Floor P.O. Box 402 Trenton, NJ 08625-0402 Dear Reader: Mercury is a persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic pollutant. An organic form of mercury (methylmercury) has been found at unacceptably high levels in certain fish, and can cause serious health effects in some fish consumers. Other exposure routes are also potentially important, including exposure to primarily inorganic forms of mercury in some private well water. Through a combination of source reduction and aggressive pollution control measures, we in New Jersey, have achieved some very notable reductions in the environmental releases of mercury over the past decade including reductions in emissions from municipal solid waste and medical waste incinerators. More significant reductions are feasible and necessary. The Mercury Task Force recommends a strategic goal of an 85% decrease in in-state mercury emissions from 1990 to 2011. (This goal equates to a 65% decrease from today to 2011.) At my request, the Mercury Task Force has diligently assembled a vast body of information to serve as the basis for a comprehensive set of recommendations to reduce the environmental impacts of mercury releases. These recommendations are designed to provide New Jersey with its first comprehensive mercury pollution reduction plan. Implementation of these recommendations will limit mercury exposures to our citizens and our wildlife.

  • Choosing Our Future for a Healthier Life, Consume Chemicals in Moderation!
Choosing our future For a healthier life, consume chemicals in moderation! I “Choosing our future” campaign Toxic chemicals in plastic bottles, sunscreens, non-stick pans and garden pest sprays may be harming our ability to stay healthy, produce children and shortening our lives, as well as affecting the health of future generations. The need for citizens to find out what they can do to protect their health, and which policy changes need to happen, is as pressing now as ever. This is why the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) and Générations Futures (GF) have developed a new and updated version of this comic book. LEARN MORE ABOUT THe “CHOOSING OUR FUTURE” CAMPAIGN AT www.env-health.org/choosingourfuture In 2008, HEAL and Générations Futures (GF) launched the first edition of this comic book. The idea was to create a bit of fun around the somewhat disturbing issue of how our environment – and especially chemicals and pesticides – affect our health. “Choosing our Future” became an enormous success. In only a couple of months the comic book was downloaded more than 10,000 times, and many people shared the cartoons on their website, their blog and various other social media websites. The success was a clear sign for HEAL and GF that there is a continuous demand for information on the hazardous effects of chemicals and pesticides. Comic strips in this publication were created by David Ratte, author of “Toxic Planet” series, Paquet publishers. In addition to this comic book, HEAL also developed a new webpage where you can find background information, other publications and different language versions of the comic book.
