FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK...... We begins another year, school starting, and a new beginning for a lot of children placing their foot on the path of education for the first time. I wish them all well in their studies. We begin this year with a Town Crier website where you can access the monthly magazine if you miss getting your hard copy. The site is: towncrierwhittlesea.wordpress.com Whittlesea Country Music Festival is on again, and there is a lot of interest in the line up of entertainment. Let’s hope the weather matches the enthusiasm of everyone attending. YOUR PIECES OF TRIVIA FOR THIS MONTH ARE:- ‘GO’ is the shortest complete sentence in the English Language. Americans eat on average 18 acres of pizza every day. And, they say that Celery has negative calories? It takes more calories to digest a piece of celery than the celery has in it to begin with. (Interesting) Regards...... Betty

We have a higher mission - to be of service to them whenever they require it... OPERATIONS CYCLE AND AERIAL OPERATION ARIEL The British forces remaining in were under the command of General Alan Brooke and by the evening of the 14th June he decided By Denys Potts the situation was hopeless and contacted Winston Churchill and convinced him it was necessary to evacuate the rest of the troops Details of the evacuation of , operation DYNAMO, between 26th before it was too late. May and 4th June 1940, were published in the December issue. Two The operation was split into two sectors, evacuations to take place very much lesser-known but significant evacuations of allied troops, from firstly Cherbourg and St Malo and secondly from Brest, St Nazaire civilians and equipment occurred shortly after during the same month. and La Pallice, this last sector to later include ports on the Gironde Estuary, Bayonne and St Jean-de-Luz only if considered necessary. There were insufficient ships available to form a convoy system so a flow of independently routed ships were despatched from British ports and this enabled the evacuation from Cherbourg to proceed smoothly with most of the 52nd Division embarked on 15th -17th June, followed by , a composite unit of other formations on the 18th. When the final ship left Cherbourg, 30,630 men had been rescued, including the 9,000 from . The evacuation from St Malo was also a success, 21,474 men from the having been rescued. A total of 28,145 British and 4,439 Allied men were rescued from Brest but St Nazaire was not free from German intervention and the larger ships had to use the bay as anchorage before they could pick men up. Up to 40,000 troops were retreating towards , 50 miles upstream so it was decided to begin the evacuation early and 13,000 base troops were taken onboard. On the 17th a tragedy occurred when the liner Lancastria was sunk by German bombing and 3,000 of the 5,800 men embarked on her were killed, even though she sank relatively slowly in shallow water, as rescue attempts were hampered by a sheet of burning oil that surrounded the ship. This disaster was not revealed in Britain for some years as Churchill forbade publication saying, ‘The newspapers have got quite enough disasters for today at least.’ At the time he had intended to lift the ban after a few days, but this was followed by the French surrender, the start of the and the constant fear of invasion. As it turned out, under the pressure of these events, he simply forgot to lift the ban until reminded of it later in the war. OPERATION CYCLE Despite this, the evacuation continued and soon after dawn on the This operation took place between the 10th -13th June at the French 18th a convoy of ten ships carrying 23,000 men left the port leaving port of Le Havre, in Upper Normanby, south-west of Dunkirk. only 4,000 still to evacuate and these were taken off at 1100 hours. K HURSTBRIDGE QUIC NEW RY D By Steven Katsineris RIDS YOUR CARPET OF UNWANTED DUST MITES, PET FLEAS & BUGS LEAVING A CLINICALLY CLEAN FRAGRANCE One Friday morning in August, I was driving back through Hurstbridge

after dropping my daughter Lara at the school bus and was heading SPECIAL! 3 ROOMS FOR $69 home at about 8.30am. I turned left off the main road at the PHONE CRAIG NOW 9716 2777 OR 0412 434 104 roundabout onto the Hurstbridge/Arthurs Creek Road. I realised it was BATHROOMS DRIVEWAYS PROTECTION & OFFICES & CARPARKS an Eastern Grey Kangaroo and quickly put the brakes on and swerved AVAILABLE slightly to the right as there was no oncoming traffic.

As the car stopped, I waited in dread, but hoping not to hear a thump of it hitting the front side of the car. But the car stopped in just enough

HEALTH BENEFITS - We know that lemon helps alleviate a sore or sticky throat, and a glass of lemon juice in some water can also help clear the sinuses. It can help cleanse the palate after a heavy meal, but more interestingly can help stimulate your liver and encourage bile formation that actually helps you break down those heavy foods and helps fat metabolism. If you have trouble digesting foods, have some lemon water half an hour before your meal. Lemon is antiseptic and antimicrobial so can help with coughs, colds, flu, parasite infestations, intestinal and mouth cleansing. Healthy Vitamin C intake from fresh fruits and vegetables may help reduce your risk of stroke, and protect you free-radical damage leading to cancer and other degenerative conditions. Vitamin C is vital for collagen production – helping keep our tissues looking and feeling younger. It boosts the immune system, increases absorption of some minerals like iron, and many health professionals recommend vitamin C for asthma – particularly if associated with respiratory infections. Vitamin C is always best consumed from freshly picked fruit and vegetables rather than supplement form. It is astringent and contains mineral like magnesium and especially potassium. The peel is high in phytonutrients so I always eat a little of it with my lemon tea. PRECAUTIONS - People with excessive stomach acid, ulcers, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may find lemons exacerbate their conditions, therefore should not eat a lot of citrus foods particularly on an empty stomach. Only in moderate amounts for those conditions. HOW TO USE - Squeeze fresh lemon on top of cooked meat dishes such as chicken, lamb or steak, also of course with fish and seafood. It can be used on top of your fruit salad (grate some ginger and honey with it, or on its own.) Lemon is excellent to keep lunchbox fruit and veg fresh and free from browning. Jazzes up a garden salad or steamed vegies with olive oil and a touch of salt. Add to some curries after they’re cooked. And if you have a sore throat go straight for a good squeeze of lemon juice followed by a half spoon of good local or manuka honey to soothe the throat almost instantly. Keep half a lemon on the shelf of your fridge to keep the fridge smelling fresh. My best tip for utilising the antioxidant potential of lemon is to simply have some in water in the evening (not with stomach ulcers or GERD). All local schools, preschools, playgroups, clubs, groups, aged care facilities and wider community are invited to contribute artwork to the City of Whittlesea Community Festival to be held on Sunday 19th March 2017. The artwork will be displayed in the outdoor gallery at the festival. In 2017 the theme will be Tapestry. Tapestry inspires us to notice the richness of our community and the contributions of individuals to the strength of that fabric. Woven from strands of different colours and textures a fabric is created that is the sum of different and differing threads. A tapestry serves as a metaphor to remind us that a strong society is built on cultural, genetic and social diversity. When viewed from outside, it may contain complex but cohesive images… documentation of personal stories, social activities, history, myths and legends or ongoing cultural patterns… this year the theme invites us to appreciate that we all have various threads running through our lives and these all contribute to the rich tapestry of our diverse community. For this fabric to be strong, it is crucial that these threads come from different Puzzle courtesy of RaisinOurKids.com directions – as do the members our rich community. 23
