But the national capabilities were splintered. For release: March 12, 1998 Janet Tennyson 202-2 19-386 1 Peter Umhofer 202-208-60 11 DETERIORATING NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE ROADS WOULD GET BOOST UNDER SENATE BILL Thousands of miles of crumbling roadways in the National Wildlife Refuge System would receive a boost under a transportation bill passedtoday by the U.S. Senate. The new funding would help remedy the $158 million road maintenance backlog faced by world’s largest network of lands dedicated to wildlife. Under the Federal Land Highways Program of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA), the reauthorization bill, S. 1173, provides for $20 million in new funding for wildlife refuge roads each year for the next 5 years. “The Senate’s action recognizes the important role the National Wildlife Refuge System plays in safeguarding America’s magnificent wildlife resources,” said Jamie Rappaport Clark, Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the agency responsible for managing the 92-million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System. “I applaud the Senate’s efforts to addressthe maintenance needs of the National Wildlife Refuge System,” said Director Clark. “I also want to recognize the tremendous leadership of SenatorsJohn Chafee and Max Baucus in making sure the legislation addressedthese needs. Receiving this funding under the Federal Lands Highways Program would help us ensure safe and accessible roads for the 30 million Americans who visit national wildlife refuges each year. New Driver's Night Observation Devices
GROUP DEFENCE DIVISION VEHICLE SYSTEMS 20 October 2020 Key facts New driver's night observation devices: Rheinmetall w Order encompasses to modernize the Bundeswehr's Marder infantry delivery of 173 Spectus II driver’s night vision fighting vehicle device retrofit kits, plus The German Bundeswehr has awarded Rheinmetall a further order for other services modernizing the tried-and-tested Marder infantry fighting vehicle, or IFV. Under w Order worth €24 million; the contract, Rheinmetall Landsysteme will now be supplying the Bundeswehr delivery to take place in with over 170 driver's night observation devices for the Marder fleet. Worth 2021 and 2022 around €24 million (including valued added tax), the order also encompasses w A new chapter in the logistical support, training and other services. Delivery begins at the end of 2021 ongoing success story and is to be complete by the end of 2022. “Extending the service The new driver's night observation device is the Spectus II. It fuses the image life of the Marder from a residual light amplifier camera with one produced by a thermal imaging infantry fighting vehicle" device, improving the driver's ability to see even in conditions of poor visibility. In addition, the system features a rear-view camera. Cooperation partners taking part in the project include Rheinmetall Technical Publications and the Contacts Rheinmetall subsidiary benntec Systemtechnik GmbH. In response to an urgent Oliver Hoffmann operational requirement for the ISAF mission in Afghanistan, Rheinmetall Head of Public previously integrated the Spectus I – the Spectus II’s forerunner – into the Rheinmetall AG Marder 1 A5A1 fleet. -

CHAPTER 6: The NASA Family The melding of all of the NASA centers, contractors, universities, and often strong personalities associated with each of them into the productive and efficient organization necessary to complete NASA’s space missions became both more critical and more difficult as NASA turned its attention from Gemini to Apollo. The approach and style and, indeed, the personality of each NASA center differed sharply. The Manned Spacecraft Center was distinctive among all the rest. Fortune magazine suggested in 1967 that the scale of NASA’s operation required a whole new approach and style of management: “To master such massively complex and expensive problems, the agency has mobilized some 20,000 individual firms, more than 400,000 workers, and 200 colleges and universities in a combine of the most advanced resources of American civilization.” The author referred to some of the eight NASA centers and assorted field installations as “pockets of sovereignty” which exercised an enormous degree of independence and autonomy.1 An enduring part of the management problem throughout the Mercury and Gemini programs that became compounded under Apollo, because of its greater technical challenges, was the diversity and distinctiveness of each of the NASA centers. The diverse cultures and capabilities represented by each of the centers were at once the space program’s greatest resource and its Achilles’ heel. NASA was a hybrid organization. At its heart was Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory established by Congress in 1917 near Hampton, Virginia, and formally dedicated in 1920. It became the Langley Research Center. Langley created the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory at Moffett Field, California, in 1939. -

Electric Vehicle Conversion: Optimisation of Parameters in the Design Process

Prepravak u električno vozilo: optimizacija parametara u procesu konstruiranja ISSN 1330-3651 (Print), ISSN 1848-6339 (Online) https://doi.org/10.17559/TV-20160613131757 ELECTRIC VEHICLE CONVERSION: OPTIMISATION OF PARAMETERS IN THE DESIGN PROCESS Mirko Gordić, Dragan Stamenković, Vladimir Popović, Slavko Muždeka, Aleksandar Mićović Preliminary communication One of the directions for making cleaner and more economic vehicles is to adopt electric vehicle concept. The paper shows current design concepts for electric vehicles worldwide, as well as current sources for supplying vehicles with electric energy. It describes a conversion of one vehicle so that it can be powered by electric motor. The results of tractive and dynamic characteristics calculation and vehicle stability simulation, before and after the conversion, are shown. Obtained results and influential factors are analysed so they can be optimised in order to influence the final characteristics of the converted vehicle. The conclusion is that the complete optimisation process should be performed before the beginning of vehicle conversion in order to avoid undesirable effects, i.e. undesirable characteristics of converted vehicle and high conversion costs. Rad predstavlja suvremene koncepte konstrukcije električnih vozila širom svijeta, kao i načine snabdjevanja vozila energijom. Opisan je prepravak vozila kako bi ga se moglo pogoniti elektro- motorom. Prikazani su rezultati vučno-dinamičkog proračuna i simulacije stabilnosti prije i poslije prepravka. Analizirani su dobiveni rezultati i utjecajni čimbenici radi optimiziranja u cilju utjecaja na karakteristike prepravljenog vozila. -
