Finally, the 2006-2007 President’s Report is included in this edition. The President’s Report David Gumbel ‘00 recognizes the overwhelming generosity of our alumni, parents and friends for which we are Editor forever grateful. I would also like to thank the alumni, faculty and all other friends of the school for your overwhelming support and the welcome I received upon returning to The High. It has been exciting, to say the least, to come back “home” again. Go Cubs! David Gumbel ‘00 Editor 2 www.uofdjesuit.org University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy President’s Message Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam Dear Friends, 130 years ago, William St. Aubin registered at Detroit College on Jefferson Avenue. He was the first student at what would later be known as the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy. Neither William nor the Jesuits charged with getting the school running could ever have imagined how this institution, and the city along with it, would evolve from that time. Much has changed – from the name to the physical location to the number of students – however, I am convinced that these original members of our family would recognize and celebrate the school as it stands today. They would recognize the tradition of academic excellence that has been our hallmark from day one. With over 10 percent of our senior class recognized by National Merit – more than any Catholic high school in the state – our student body would strike them as a capable and brilliant group. Perhaps more importantly, they would find rooms filled with young men curious and eager to “find God in all things” no matter what the subject. If they had been able to attend our annual scholarship dinner held a few weeks ago, they Fr. Karl J. Kiser, S.J. would have witnessed our mission alive and well in yet another generation of scholars. Each President year at that dinner, called the Ignatian Circle of Care, students, benefactors, and parents gather for an evening of conversation and thanksgiving. When the meal draws to a close I usually pass the microphone around for anyone who would like to speak. As I listened this time, I was profoundly aware of how the Ignatian mission permeates all that we do. In that room, students spoke not only about the intellectual rigor of the school but also the deep care and concern each one of them felt from the faculty. Many students spoke about how present God is to them in the halls and in the classroom. Students commented that they were learning to be not only men, but “men for others.” The desire to serve as a result of their formation at U of D Jesuit was echoed by many of these young Cubs. At the end of the evening, several donors said to me that this was by far the most rewarding night of the year for them. I left the evening thinking about how profoundly God has blessed our community over the years. It is humbling and awe-inspiring to think that the vision of the Jesuits in 1877 continues to grow and flourish at U of D Jesuit. While our surroundings and the makeup of our student body has changed over the last 130 years, the education of “men for others for the greater glory of God” continues to be the guiding force behind all we do at 8400 South Cambridge. God bless, Karl J. Kiser, S.J. President Winter 2007-2008 | Highlights 3 State of The High A.M.D.G. Our Way of Proceeding As we begin the 2007-2008 school year, we are in solid shape. If you like statistics, I can tell you that 17 seniors qualified as National Merit Achievement, Nationally Commended, National Achievement and National Commended Achievement students. In other words, nearly ten percent of our seniors have been recognized nationally for their academic achievements. That is an incredible number, but I do not think any of us are surprised. When I think of the level of talent and dedication our faculty possesses, excellence is what we have come to expect. In my new role, I am blessed to be able to observe highly qualified teachers performing their craft on a daily basis. We are really fortunate to have such a highly-skilled and dedicated group of professionals here at U of D Jesuit. One other program that I am delighted to introduce is our Faculty Formation Program. Currently, almost half of our faculty is meeting regularly with our Mission Director, Fr. Brian Lehane S.J., in order to renew, and in some cases begin, their commitment to Jesuit education. This is a time for new teachers to begin their study of Ignatian pedagogy and veteran teachers to return to the philosophy which distinguishes Jesuit schools from all other Catholic schools. It is a time for them to read, reflect, and share their experiences G.A. Marando with one another. Ultimately, this will help them to teach with a renewed sense of mission Principal and meaning. In Ignatian terms, we are always pursuing the “magis,” Latin for the “more,” in whatever capacity we hold here at U of D Jesuit. My hope is that the culmination of this program will be to be able to invite several faculty members to participate in a three-day retreat at one of our most special and sacred places, Holy Family Retreat House in Oxley, Canada.
