INTER ACTIONS DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS 2015 The Department of Physics has a very accomplished family of alumni. In this issue we begin to recognize just a few of them with stories submitted by graduates from each of the decades since 1950. We want to invite all of you to renew and strengthen your ties to our department. We would love to hear from you, telling us what you are doing and commenting on how the department has helped in your career and life. Alumna returns to the Physics Department to Implement New MCS Core Education When I heard that the Department of Physics needed a hand implementing the new MCS Core Curriculum, I couldn’t imagine a better fit. Not only did it provide an opportunity to return to my hometown, but Carnegie Mellon itself had been a fixture in my life for many years, from taking classes as a high school student to teaching after graduation. I was thrilled to have the chance to return. I graduated from Carnegie Mellon in 2008, with a B.S. in physics and a B.A. in Japanese. Afterwards, I continued to teach at CMARC’s Summer Academy for Math and Science during the summers while studying down the street at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2010, I earned my M.A. in East Asian Studies there based on my research into how cultural differences between Japan and America have helped shape their respective robotics industries. After receiving my master’s degree and spending a summer studying in Japan, I taught for Kaplan as graduate faculty for a year before joining the Department of Physics at Cornell University. -

Introduction: Modular Culture In all of modern physics there are few elements of theory so pervasive as Feynman diagramsÐJulian Schwinger once sardonically remarked that these simple spacetime figures brought quantum field theory to the masses. In reaching ‘the masses’ this graphic synthesis of quantum mechanics and relativity played a formative role in the development of quantum electrodynamics, meson theory, S-matrix theory, condensed matter physics, the standard model of particle interac- tions, and more recently, string theory. Part representation, part abstract symbol- ism, these line diagrams constitute one of the most intriguing and precise forms of modelling a¤orded by the physical sciences. With stakes that high, it is not surprising that historians, foremost among them Silvan Schweber, have both followed the growth of quantum electrodynamics after the war in detail and precisely tracked antecedents of the Feynman diagrams from cloud chamber photographs to schematic electronic diagrams; from E. C. G. Brief Description of Research: My research focuses on the fundamental of magnetic nanoparticles that have very uniform sizes, as well as possible applications in information storage and processing, and biomedicine. Monodisperse nanoparticles are synthesized by chemical methods and used as building blocks for self-assembly into arrays. The collective magnetic behavior of the arrays has been studied using electron holography and Lorentz microscopy to image domains, and using polarized small angle neutron scattering to investigate the magnetization length scales within nanoparticles and their assemblies. Magnetic nanoparticles and nanopillars are also made by electron beam lithography and etching. -

Spies, Lies, and a Commission 53 Spies, Lies, and a Commission: A Case Study in the Mobilization of the Canadian Civil Liberties ~overnent' Dominique ClCment It was unnecessary to set up a Royal Commission to do apolice job, and a job that had already been done by the R.C.M.P. There is no Canadian precedent and no authority for setting up of a Royal Commission to sit in secret. There does not seem to be any authority for the action of the Commission in swearing witnesses to secrecy. The Commission refused to advise witnesses as to their rights, even when requested to do so. In many cases the Commission refused access to counsel at a time when the Commissioners well know that charges would be preferred against the person asking counsel. The Commissioners showed strong political bias and prejudice, and by the procedure they adopted they unfairly handicapped the defence of the ac~used.~ This remonstrance was part of a letter sent to Justice Minister J.L. Ilsley by the Civil Rights Union (Toronto) in February, 1947, and emphasizes what civil libertarians found most abhorrent about the Royal Commission on Espionage. The commission, from February to August, 1946, embarked on one of the most thorough abuses of individual rights ever conducted by an organ of the Canadian state.3 It was armed with extensive powers under the War Measures Act, Oficial SecretsAct and the Public InquiriesAct to determine the extent ofthe Soviet spy ring in Canada revealed by the defection of Igor ~ouzenko.~Coming on the heels of the deportation of Japanese Canadians in 1945-6 and extensive censorship under the Defence of Canada Regulations throughout World War Two (WWII), the commission provided civil libertarians with another powerful issue to remind the public of the vulnerability of individual's civil liberties to state abuse.5 The Royal Commission on Espionage played a key role in stimulating the early civil liberties movement in post-WWII Canada. -

FREDERICK REINES March 16, 1918–August 26, 1998 BY WILLIAM KRO P P , J ONAS SC HU LT Z , AND H ENRY SOBEL REDERICK REINES WAS A man of imposing physical stature Fand presence, with an even more imposing appetite for physics and a passion for discovery. His energy, drive, and far-reaching vision carried him to the very heights of discovery but never quite satisfied his yearning for more. His philoso- phy could be described by a line from Robert Browning he sometimes quoted: “Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp/Or what’s a heaven for?”1 His scientific longing and reach often led him to envision and plan experiments of the most challenging nature on what seemed to be an exception- ally broad, expansive scale. Despite the financial vicissitudes that would often, to his consternation, constrain the size of the realized project, his sustained effort and far-sightedness would invariably pay off with genuinely remarkable results. John Wheeler described him as “talented in both theory and experiment, a bear of a man given to thinking big about nearly impossible problems as he paced up and down in his oversized shoes.”2 Reines’s achievements brought him many distinguished awards, the highest of which was the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics, which he shared with Martin Perl, and which rec- ognized Reines’s experimental discovery of the neutrino some 40 years earlier.
