PAGE 2 Te Awamutu Courier, Thursday, June 14, 2007 Kids benefi t from Tree-mendous effort By Cathy Asplin Fair Trade too It was Arbor Day last week so you would expect a few trees to be planted around the district. But most people would be sur- prised by the numbers that were added to the banks of the Man- gapiko Stream - around 1400 trees, shrubs, fl axes and grasses were planted there as part of the Lower Mangapiko Clean Stream Care project. The plantings over two days last week were across three properties - Len Day’s, Barry and Betsy Bryant’s and Janet Macky’s Paterangi farms. The owners were delighted to have help from Fonterra for the sessions, with staff members from Te Awamutu and Hautapu sites lending a hand. Representatives from Envi- ronment Waikato, the Landcare Trust and Biodiversity Waikato were also ‘mucking in’. The Clean Stream project was initially set up by farmers along the Mangapiko who were con- cerned at the state of the water and the erosion caused by the stream. After discussing the issue with Environment Waikato, the group was formed with a view to actively restore, enhance and protect the stream environment. ZIG ZAG WALLACE on the offensive against Kahu Bentson at Te Awamutu Sports Club on Saturday night. 1650711AD Wallace wows crowd Te Awamutu’s Zig-Zag Wallace got the better of three-times Oceania champion Kahu Bentson in a light heavyweight bout at Te Awamutu Sports Club’s boxing tournament on Saturday night. Bentson, known for his speed and unrelenting tirade of punches, stepped up a class to take on Wallace, fresh from winning bronze at the Oce- ania championships. A fi red-up Wallace took the lead early on in the bout. It was a great display of boxing by these two internationals throughout the four rounds with the Aucklander winning the last round. The score went to the wire, with Wallace win- ning the bout by a split decision. Wallace had originally been down to fi ght Bay of Plenty’s Rhys King but he was ruled out suffer- ing from infl uenza. Bentson stepped up from the middleweight division to take Wallace on.
