Pioneer's International Music Summit Grand Finale Festival gets Ibiza’s 2012 clubbing season off to an electrifying start Submitted by: Kate Gordon Thursday, 31 May 2012 31st May 2012, Ibiza: Pioneer (http://www.djsounds.com/)’s position at the heart of the dance music industry has been reaffirmed with this year’s International Music Summit (IMS) Grand Finale Festival in Ibiza’s picturesque old town. As the only contemporary music event to be held within the Dalt Vila UNESCO World Heritage site, the IMS Grand Finale Festival is a truly momentous occasion. It officially marks the end of IMS and the opening of Ibiza’s world-famous clubbing season. This year DJ E.A.S.E., of Nightmares On Wax, kicked off proceedings as the setting sun bathed the Balearic island in a golden glow. Performances from Disclosure, Seth Troxler, Loco Dice, Azari & III and Carl Cox took the energised audience into the night. The crowd then headed over to Ibiza’s iconic Pacha nightclub, where Pete Tong and Calvin Harris raised the roof until the small hours. The previous evening had seen David Guetta, Paul Oakenfold, Diplo, MINX and Goldfish take to the stage at Dalt Vila as enthusiastic fans lapped up the atmosphere against the stunning backdrop of the Ibizan harbour. Now in its fifth year, the three-day IMS is one of the dance music industry’s most influential events. This year’s summit featured keynote speeches from internet giants such as Google, YouTube, Spotify and Twitter and interviews with legendary producers Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rodgers. -

There’s no sound available through the camera, but the view high up in the sky is quite nice. Once the sun goes down, the neon lights should add some extra colour to your screen as well. Exploring structural sections in EDM DJ-created radio mixes with the help of automatic music descriptors Vincent Zurita Turk Supervised by Perfecto Herrera and Giuseppe Bandiera Sound & Music Computing Music Technology Group - Universitat Pompeu Fabra Abstract Disc Jockeys are the most likely the ultimate experts at mixing music to “move the crowd”. In this work, structural sections based on “levels of emotional experience” in electronic dance music (EDM) are investigated by analyzing DJ-created radio mixes using automatic music descriptors in order to get audio content information. Mixes are first manually annotated to categorise structural sections and then, their characteristics and patterns between them are investigated. Finally, various evaluations are performed to explore the accuracy with which a system could automatically detect, with the given information, the different sections within randomly chosen independent ten seconds excerpts. Results prove the reliability of the chosen descriptors to achieve a successful classification with moderate number of errors. Moreover, a solution for improving the prediction’s accuracy by taking in account patterns between structural sections is proposed. Table of contents 1. REPRESENTATIONS OF RACE AND ITALIAN-NESS IN CANADA’S PRINTED MEDIA KRYSTA PANDOLFI A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN EDUCATION YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO March 2018 © Krysta Pandolfi, 2018 Abstract In 2009, Dina Pugliese, co-host of a popular daily television show in Toronto, stated in an interview that she was hesitant to pursue an on-camera career because she worried that she was “too spicy-Italian.” Her words speak to long-standing stereotypes of Italians, developed out of eighteenth and nineteenth century representations of Italy. Clearly, hers is not an identity that has been uncomplicatedly subsumed into Whiteness. Stereotypes borrowed from Europe mark Italian-Canadians, who mostly come from Southern Italy, and who were seen (both inside and outside of Europe) as ‘swarthy’, ‘hot-blooded’ and ‘short-tempered.’ In this dissertation, I examine the concept of Italian-ness in two culturally specific Italian- Canadian magazines, Panoram Italia and Accenti. Thematic data was collected to explore how the magazines construct the image of the Italian-Canadian in their editorial discourses and how this discourse analysis may serve to reveal existing racialized power relations. I identify parallels between Italy as Europe’s south and the Italian-Canadian community, and the ways they serve to function as a filter to understanding Italian-Canadian migration and ongoing concepts of difference within Canada. Furthermore, I explore how the magazine editorial discourses strove to define the interplay between Italian-ness within Canada’s ethno-racial categorizations. -

De thesis legt overeenkomsten en verschillen in marketingtechnieken tussen de popmuziekwereld en de dancemuziekwereld bloot. De opkomst en creatie van de superster in de jaren tachtig worden bestudeerd, alsmede de geschiedenis van dancemuziek en marketingtechnieken in de dancescene. Hierdoor komen ook enkele fundamentele verschillen tussen deze twee muziekwerelden aan het licht. De dj is aan het einde van de 20 e eeuw het middelpunt geworden van de dancescene. Het uitgebreide takenpakket van een dj vertoont overeenkomsten met het takenpakket van een superster in de popmuziek. Ook op het gebied van de marketing zijn er diverse overeenkomsten gevonden in dit onderzoek. Hier zijn echter ook belangrijke verschillen aan het licht gekomen. Uit de interviews met specialisten uit de dancewereld blijkt dat de marketingmethodes die zij gebruiken, voor een groot deel overeenkomen met de benodigdheden die gevonden werden voor het bereiken van de supersterstatus in de popmuziek in de jaren tachtig. Vier van die zeven benodigdheden, te weten het verzorgen van optredens, wereldwijde distributie, cross-overs en weinig aanbod op het gebied van optredens, worden volledig identiek ook toegepast in de marketing van dj’s. Slechts met één punt, het bezitten van sex appeal, wordt op dit moment niets gedaan door de specialisten uit de dance-industrie. -
