  • XVIII. Die Auswanderung Aus Makedonien
XVIII. Jahrhunderts, be- leuchten.

  • Early Mycenaean Arkadia: Space and Place(S) of an Inland and Mountainous Region
Early Mycenaean Arkadia: Space and Place(s) of an Inland and Mountainous Region Eleni Salavoura1 Abstract: The concept of space is an abstract and sometimes a conventional term, but places – where people dwell, (inter)act and gain experiences – contribute decisively to the formation of the main characteristics and the identity of its residents. Arkadia, in the heart of the Peloponnese, is a landlocked country with small valleys and basins surrounded by high mountains, which, according to the ancient literature, offered to its inhabitants a hard and laborious life. Its rough terrain made Arkadia always a less attractive area for archaeological investigation. However, due to its position in the centre of the Peloponnese, Arkadia is an inevitable passage for anyone moving along or across the peninsula. The long life of small and medium-sized agrarian communities undoubtedly owes more to their foundation at crossroads connecting the inland with the Peloponnesian coast, than to their potential for economic growth based on the resources of the land. However, sites such as Analipsis, on its east-southeastern borders, the cemetery at Palaiokastro and the ash altar on Mount Lykaion, both in the southwest part of Arkadia, indicate that the area had a Bronze Age past, and raise many new questions. In this paper, I discuss the role of Arkadia in early Mycenaean times based on settlement patterns and excavation data, and I investigate the relation of these inland communities with high-ranking central places. In other words, this is an attempt to set place(s) into space, supporting the idea that the central region of the Peloponnese was a separated, but not isolated part of it, comprising regions that are also diversified among themselves.

An Insight Guide of Prespa Lakes Region Short description of the region Located in the north-western corner of Greece at 850 metres above sea level and surrounded by mountains, the Prespa Lakes region is a natural park of great significance due to its biodiversity and endemic species. Prespa is a trans boundary park shared between Greece, Albania and FYR Macedonia. It only takes a few moments for the receptive visitor to see that they have arrived at a place with its own unique personality. Prespa is for those who love nature and outdoor activities all year round. This is a place to be appreciated with all the senses, as if it had been designed to draw us in, and remind us that we, too, are a part of nature. Prespa is a place where nature, art and history come together in and around the Mikri and Megali Prespa lakes; there are also villages with hospitable inhabitants, always worth a stop on the way to listen to their stories and the histories of the place. The lucky visitor might share in the activities of local people’s daily life, which are all closely connected to the seasons of the year. These activities have, to a large extent, shaped the life in Prespa. The three main traditional occupations in the region are agriculture, animal husbandry and fishing. There are a lot of paths, guiding you into the heart of nature; perhaps up into the high mountains, or to old abandoned villages, which little by little are being returned once more to nature’s embrace.

  • Georgios Maroulis & Rea Artelari a Floristic Report from Mount Erimanthos
Georgios Maroulis & Rea Artelari A floristic report from Mount Erimanthos (NW-Peloponnisos, Greece) Abstract Maroulis, G. & Artelari, R.: A floristic report from Mount Erimanthos (NW-Peloponnisos, Greece). — Fl. Medit. 15: 109-120. 2005. — ISSN 1120-4052. A list of 117 vascular taxa new to Mount Erimanthos (NW Peloponnisos, Greece) is presented, based on recent field work. Notes on collection localities and species habitats are provided. 6 taxa are Balkan endemics and 6 Greek endemics. 7 taxa are new to Peloponnisos and one is characterized as Rare. Introduction This paper deals with 117 new reports for the vascular flora of Mt Erimanthos and is complementary to Maroulis & Artelari (2001) in which 473 taxa new to this mountain are presented. All the above taxa are included in a PhD Thesis, concerning the flora and vege- tation of Erimanthos, which was carried out the first author (Maroulis 2003) at the Botanical Institute of Patras University. Information on the geology and the topography of Mt Erimanthos is given in Maroulis & Artelari (2001). The topographic map of the study area is presented in Fig. 1. References to the flora of Erimanthos are found in Halácsy (1900-1904, 1908, 1912), Barbero & Quezel (1976), Strid (1986), Strid & Tan (1991, 1997, 2002), Tan & Iatrou (2001) and Maroulis & Artelari (2001). Scan floristic data are also to be found in other sources unrelated to the flora of the mountain. Material and methods The study is based on collections, field observations carried out by the first author dur- ing the years 1997–2002, as well as on herbarium material of the Botanical Museum of Patras University (UPA).

Its contribution to the historiography of the period stems from the fact that it constitutes the first academic study of the third largest resistance organisation in Greece, the 5/42 regiment of evzones. The study of this national resistance organisation can thus extend our knowledge of the Greek resistance effort, the political relations between the main resistance groups, the conditions that led to the civil war and the domestic relevance of British policies.

  • Religious Education in Greece - Orthodox Christianity, Islam and Secularism
ISSN 2411-9563 (Print) European Journal of Social Sciences September-December 2015 ISSN 2312-8429 (Online) Education and Research Volume 2, Issue 4 Religious Education in Greece - Orthodox Christianity, Islam and Secularism Marios Koukounaras Liagkis Lecturer in Religious Education, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens [email protected] Angeliki Ziaka Assistant Professor in the Study of Religion, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki [email protected] Abstract This study is an attempt to address the issue of religion in the public sphere and secularism. Since the Eastern Orthodox Church has been established by the Greek constitution (1975) as the prevailing religion of Greece, there are elements of legal agreements- which inevitably spawn interactions- between state and Church in different areas. One such area is Religious Education. This article focuses on Religious Education (RE) in Greece which is a compulsory school subject and on two important interventions that highlight the interplay between religion, politics and education: firstly the new Curriculum for RE (2011) and secondly the introduction of an Islamic RE (2014) in a Greek region (Thrace) where Christians and Muslims have lived together for more than four centuries. The researches are based on fieldwork research and they attempt to open the discussion on the role of RE in a secular education system and its potential for coexistence and social cohesion. Key words: religious education, secularism, curriculum, Islam, public sphere Introduction This article is focused

  • Antartiko - Prespes
COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN LTD West Axis at limits of Region of Western Macedonia – Design for the Improvement of Road Florina – Antartiko - Prespes The project is about the improvement of the National Road from the Northern City of Florina to the Prespa Lakes Area, a highly touristic site of Northern Greece. The total road length is about 56 Km and the length designed by this project is about 26Km. High Mountain elevations between 750m and 1500m above sea level with very steep slopes and very deep ravines. To this extremely rugged terrain with granite subsoils there will be constructed 17 Valley bridges and an Cut&Cover and this is the subject of the Structural Design of the project. All bridges are precast – prestressed concrete beam structures of total lengths between 80m and 130m. The precast beams are transferred in situ and raised to be placed on the high piers and abutments. They are circular in plan with relatively small radius (95Μ to 140Μ) and have a longitudinal slope of about 6%. The overall width of the deck including the pavements is about 13.00m. They have a single traffic surface with one lane on each direction and barriers on each side. Expansion joints are provided at the abutments. The structural continuity of the deck along the length is provided with a continuity deck slab through the piers. Each pier consists of a pair of circular hollow columns of reinforced concrete and a cap beam on top of each pier which supports the upper structure resting on anchored laminated elastomeric bearings. At both bridge ends, transition slabs in conjunction with the abutments and the abutment wing walls form the transitional backfill.
