XVIII. Die Auswanderung aus Makedonien Christos Mandatzis Makedonien, immer schon ein traditionelles Zentrum des Zusammentreffens, der Kommuni- kation und der Koexistenz der Balkanvölker, war eine der dynamischsten Regionen des Balkans, ein Raum, wo sich zahlreiche der sozioökonomischen Aktivitäten der Balkanländer entwickelten. Gleichzeitig stellte es den Schauplatz zahlreicher Kriege und Zusammenstöße und somit den Gegenstand von Ansprüchen dar, die alle Nachbarländer mit militärischen und diplomatischen Mitteln durchzusetzen versuchten. Außerdem war Makedonien auch eine Re- gion, in der sich umfassende – vorübergehende oder bleibende – Migrations- oder Auswanderungsbewegungen aus diesen Ländern vollzogen. Diese Studie soll die Aspekte der Entwicklung des Auswanderungsphänomens in Makedonien, insbesondere vom Ende des 19. bis zur zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, be- leuchten. Dabei werden die wirtschaftlichen, politischen und sozialen Ursachen, die zum Auftreten dieses Phänomens führten und jeweils auch die Art und Weise beeinflussten, wie diese Migration sich entwickelte, nur kurz berührt werden. Denn diese Ursachen, die direkt mit der Geschichte der Region in Verbindung stehen, werden anderswo ausführlich behandelt. Von primärem Interesse ist dabei die Abwanderung von Bewohnern Makedoniens in Länder des Auslandes, wo sie sich gewöhnlich bessere Perspektiven für ihr persönliches oder familiäres Leben erhofften. Nicht berücksichtigt werden dabei andere Massenmigrations- bewegungen (sei es in Form freiwilliger Abwanderungen oder erzwungener Vertreibung), wie sie im 20. Jahrhundert auf Grund der politischen Entwicklungen oder der Änderungen des Grenzverlaufs auf dem Balkan stattfanden, meist im Anschluss an bewaffnete Konflikte und internationale Abkommen, wie z.B. die mehr als siebzehn Migrationsströme (oder zutref- fender Flüchtlingsströme), die in Makedonien im Zeitraum von 1912 bis 1924 zu verzeichnen waren, oder die Abwanderung von etwa 56.000 Personen, die nach dem Ende des griechischen Bürgerkriegs in die Länder des damaligen Ostblocks flohen. -

XIV. Emigration from Macedonia
XIV. Emigration From Macedonia by Christos Mandatzis A crossroads, a hub, a meeting-point, a place of confluence and commerce and co- existence of the Balkan peoples over the centuries, Macedonia has always been one of the most dynamic regions in this corner of the world, a place in which many of the so- cial and economic activities of neighbouring nations developed and flourished. A battlefield and an apple of discord, sought after by all its neighbours through military and diplomatic means, it was also a region of major population movements, permanent or casual, from the countries upon which it bordered. The pages that follow illuminate aspects of this emigrational phenomenon in Ma- cedonia, primarily from the end of the 19th to the latter part of the 20th century. The economic, political and social causes that sparked this emigration and determined its pattern on each occasion, which are directly related to the history of the region and are analysed in detail elsewhere, will be touched on only very briefly. This study focuses primarily on the movements of emigrants from Macedonia to foreign countries, usually in search of better prospects for themselves and their families. We are not concerned here with other mass movements of population (either voluntary relocation or deportation), like those that followed political developments or border changes in the Balkans in the 20th century and were usually consequent upon armed conflict and bi- or multi-lateral agreements such as, for example, the more than seven- teen population shifts (essentially movements of refugees) that took place in Macedonia between 1912 and 1924 or the departure of some 56,000 persons to the countries of the then Eastern Bloc after the end of the Greek Civil War. -

Cyril and Methodius University, Faculty of Philisophy Skopje, Macedonia Our long-time responsibility has been to count ourselves, to know how many of us there are. N. Batzaria At present, we know that the latest battles for conquering Ottoman Macedonia in 1912/13 were led with heavy artillery and that weapon power had the final say in the allocation of the Ottoman heritage in Europe. Howev- er, the last battle for Macedonia was preceded by a large number of lesser bat- tles in which the churches and schools were on the battlefields, while the we- apons used were the cross and school books. These attempts for spiritual and intellectual conquering of the Christian peoples in Macedonia on the part of their Balkan neighbours were regularly followed by statistical records of the newly found Greeks, Bulgarians, Serbs and Romanians. Ever since the new followers had been registered and, more often than not, after the number of these duly registered followers would have been doubled at least, the “objecti- ve” statistical results would have been presented in public and the statistician “successfully” proved that the largest number of inhabitants in Macedonia had the same nationality as his. The first victim of this war of numbers for the conquering of Mace- donia was one of the small Christian peoples in the country – the Aromani- ans (Vlachs). Insufficiently numerous or compact to be a serious candidate in the battle for the Ottoman heritage, but sufficiently numerous and preva- 154 Nikola MINOV lent throughout Macedonia to enable an excellent negotiating position to tho- se who manage to achieve patronage over them, the Aromanians, as Henry Noel Brailsford penetratingly noted, became the pivot of Macedonian ques- tion.1 Greek statesmen were aware that north of Kastoria (Aromanian: Kus- turea; Macedonian: Kostur) it was only the Aromanians who gave Hellenism a foothold. -

Introduction As in the previous years we hereby want to report on our plant collection activities in 2002 and their results. By that we want to inform all partners and contributors to Flora Hellenica what additional plant material from which regions of Greece is now available in Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem. This material will hopefully be used for an updating of the published two volumes of Flora Hellenica and for the elaboration of all future volumes. In 2002 we could realize two excursions, one in early springtime and one in autumn: March 23th - April 19th Ioannina, Trikala, Karditsa, Larissa, Magnisia, Pieria, Grevena September 30th - Thesprotias, Preveza, Etolia-Akarnania, Lefkas, Ahaia, October 24th Ilias Collection points of both excursions are shown by the following map based on our private access data base: Collecting route in 2002 As in the previous years we have planned our daily collection on base of 10 x 10 km- UTM-squares. -

Case Report Built Cultural Heritage Recording and Evaluation in the Traditional Settlement of Siatista in Greece: Functional and Institutional Proposals for Conservation Eleni G. Linaki School of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens, 10682 Athens, Greece; [email protected] Received: 16 June 2019; Accepted: 19 August 2019; Published: 26 August 2019 Abstract: This case report explores the town of Siatista (located in the Western Macedonia Region—Greece), which is designated as a “traditional settlement”. The paper argues that, despite the relevant legislation that designated 400 settlements in Greece as “traditional settlements” and put them under protection, Siatista has no delimited traditional section. Through the years, new house typologies, demolitions, and alterations of its urban form have appeared, and Siatista has lost its identity. Having as an ultimate goal to identify proper planning guidelines and regulations for the preservation of Siatista’s built heritage, the methodology used in the paper includes the following steps: (a) recording and codification of the key legislation for the protection of Siatista, including the official urban plans (and their revisions); (b) identification and mapping of the urban form and spatial characteristics of Siatista (existing land uses, house typology, etc.); (c) identification of the alterations of the urban form and the demolitions, mainly with the use of aerial photos (1960–2014); and (d) creation of a map presenting the remaining built heritage per degree of evaluation. Following the analysis of the existing situation and the identification of the key challenges, the paper ends by defining and delimitating the well-preserved section of the town (proposing stricter rules and regulations for its preservation). -
