A digital catalogue for “Dances On Their Own”, a solo exhibition by Jason Wee at Richard Koh Fine Art, 229 Jalan Maarof, Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar, 59000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 02 - 18 May 2019 4 5 DancesJason Wee, 2019 On Their Own These new works mark the artist’s return to the strategies of abstraction in landscape images, as well as the category of ‘the photographic’. Each of these images can be thought of as composites of every other image in the set, and comprises both extreme close- ups and landscape views. The artist follow queer bodies through an unspecified location in Singapore, as these individuals cross and recross the area looking for each other. Sex, as the critic Douglas Crimp has written, is ‘everywhere for us’, the driving compulsion and the ambition for the evening.     EMBARGOED TILL MON, 21 MAY 2018 Finalists for the Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Signature Art Prize 2018 revealed The exhibition of finalist artworks for the 4th edition of the juried contemporary art award to open on 25 May 21 MAY 2017, Singapore – The Singapore Art Museum and Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) Foundation announced the APB Foundation Signature Art Prize 2018 finalist artworks today, which will be on view at an exhibition held from 25 May to 2 September 2018 at the National Museum of Singapore, the venue supporter for the Prize’s finalist exhibition. The triennial APB Foundation Signature Art Prize spotlights outstanding examples of contemporary art from emerging and established artists produced over the last three years, and for this fourth edition, has expanded in scope to include Central Asia in addition to the Asia Pacific region. The Prize is worth SGD 100,000, with SGD 60,000 awarded to the Grand Prize winner and SGD 15,000 each for two Jurors’ Choice Award winners. A People’s Choice Award of SGD 10,000 will also be offered to the artwork that receives the highest number of public votes on-site at the exhibition.     UBUNTU An evening in aid of Tana River Life Foundation Dear Friends, Thank you for your presence this evening at “Ubuntu: An Evening in aid of Tana River Life Foundation”. Ubuntu is an African Philosophy about humanity which Archbishop Desmond Tutu explained in this way: “Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you cannot exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can’t be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality – Ubuntu – you are known for your generosity. We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity.” This evening would not have been possible without the spirit of Ubuntu on the part of so many, not least the people at AEDAS Singapore, our co-hosts as well as pro bono architects of the Emmaus Centre Project (ECP) now under construction. Gede Mahendra Yasa’s After Paradise Lost #1 was awarded the People’s Choice Award for receiving the most votes by members of the public at the exhibition. The winners were announced this evening at an awards ceremony graced by Minister Grace Fu of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. Inaugurated in 2008 by APB Foundation and Singapore Art Museum, this is the fourth edition of the triennial APB Foundation Signature Art Prize. The Prize recognises the most outstanding contemporary art produced over the previous three years across Asia Pacific, and, for the first time in its decade-long history, the region of Central Asia for this edition as well. The winners of the Grand Prize and Jurors’ Choice Awards were selected from 15 finalist artworks, which are on view at the Signature Art Prize exhibition till 2 September 2018 at the National Museum of Singapore, venue supporter for the exhibition.

    M E L A N I E P O C O C K Possibilities For a Non-Alienated Biennale: Experiences of Conditions of Production in The Kochi-Muziris and Singapore Biennales l d ı v a n 46 — DECEMBER / 2019 The title of this essay is both a tribute to and rewording of the theme of the 2018 Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Possibilities for a Non-Alienated life. In her curatorial note for the exhibition, artistic director Anita Dube identifies “virtual hyper-connectivity” as the primary cause of human beings’ current alienation “from the warm solidarities of community.”1 Feeding this alienation, Dube suggests, is a fundamental lack of empathy for people whose socio-economic, material (and invariably virtual) conditions differ from our own. In order to mitigate our increasing estrangement from others, Dube advocates pursuing “a politics of friendship,” whose interdependent relationships would make us more aware of the circumstances which shape different communities’ lived experience.2 To quote Dube, “If we desire a better life on this earth… we must in all humility start to reject an existence in the service of capital. Through the potential of social action, coming together, we ask and search for … critical questions, in the hope of dialogue.”3 This search for dialogue with communities and contexts surfaced throughout Dube’s Biennale, in projects whose materials and logics of assembly drew on Kochi’s coastal environment. Nowhere were these materials and logics more apparent than in Ecoside and the Rise of Free Fall (2018), an installation by Bangladeshi artist Marzia Farhana, composed of broken household furniture, appliances and objects.

Organised by the National Arts Council, the Biennale will feature a total of more than 50 artists and art collectives from over 36 countries and regions including Singapore. Following the critical success of SB2006, this second edition will continue to be the significant cultural event that brings visual arts into the daily lives of Singaporeans. THEME SB2008, through its theme WONDER, proposes to investigate the articulation and creation of marvels, riddles and illusions in our world today. Its conceptual scope issues a challenge to the contemporary world, a world that no longer questions choices, nor allows for things and events to awe us. Through contemporary art, Wonder calls on us to question and be curious; to reach beyond the surface, surpassing the apparent and to allow ourselves be surprised, awed, tantalised and challenged.
