Through the center’s programming, we hope not simply to extend the boundaries between the university and the city, but to redefine—and, where possible, to eliminate—those boundaries. We hope to combine the academic with the intellectual as well as with the social and political, and, in this way, to move forward the larger educational enterprise. It is, of course, a utopian vision: a guide and a goal. We do believe it can be realized. —Founding Vision Statement, UCSC Women’s Center, 1985 During the birth of the second wave of the feminist movement in the early 1970s, women’s centers emerged on many college campuses across the United States. As Beth Willinger points out in her article “Women’s Centers, Their Missions, and the Process of Change,” most of these women’s centers were devoted to either direct service or to feminist research.1 Founded in 1985, over a decade after the first college women’s centers 1In Sharon L. University and College Women’s Centers: A Journey Toward Equity (Westport, Conn.: Greenwood Press, 2002) p. 48. page 2 Introduction opened their doors, the UCSC Women’s Center not only contested this bifurcation between service and research, but also broadened the vision of a women’s center far beyond that of most academic women’s centers. From the beginning this visionary women’s center saw the campus as one community and therefore sought to serve not only students, but also staff and faculty. Perhaps even more extraordinary was the goal of surmounting the borders between town and gown by serving the surrounding community as well. In the fall of 2005, the Women’s Center celebrates its twentieth anniversary. How has this original vision shifted and transformed over twenty years of history, as both the university and feminism have changed? Conceived of and completed for this occasion, this oral history volume features seven interviews with narrators who address the vision and achievements, as well as the challenges faced by the Women’s Center over time. The interviews are with two of the founding faculty, Helene Moglen and Marge Frantz, as well as five staff women who served as either directors or assistant directors, or both. The significance of these interviews extends beyond UC Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz community, for by tracing the trajectory of one women’s center on one campus, we can come to a greater historical understanding of changes not only in higher education’s response to feminism, but of the impact of the feminist movement itself. The first interview in this volume is with founder Helene Moglen. Hired as a literature professor and dean of humanities at UCSC in 1978, Moglen arrived on fire with the goal of strengthening and institutionalizing the then student-run women’s studies program, a vision that proved not entirely popular among the grassroots feminist students who had taken initiative in bringing women’s studies to UCSC. However, it Introduction page 3 was clear to Moglen, who well understood power structures at the university, that women’s studies would not survive if it remained a student-run, marginalized program. Moglen, who is described in this volume by her colleague Marge Frantz, as “having enormous energy,” then used her considerable political acuity to establish a women’s center at UCSC. Moglen’s hope was that the Women’s Center would become the “activist arm of women’s studies,” and relieve the developing women’s studies program from providing a social center for feminist students, thus allowing it to focus on its academic mission. Along with several other faculty, she also founded the Feminist Research Activity (FRA), an organized research unit which funded and highlighted feminist research by faculty and graduate students. This tripartite vision established a strong foundation for a political, academic, and social feminist culture which has flourished at UCSC for years.

    The White Slave Trade and the Yellow Peril: Anti-Chinese Rhetoric and Women’s Moral Authority A thesis submitted to the Department of History, Miami University, in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for Honors in History by Hannah E. Zmuda May 2021 Oxford, Ohio Abstract Despite the mid-to-late nineteenth and early twentieth century’s cultural preoccupation with white women’s sexual vulnerability, another phenomenon managed to take hold of public consciousness: “yellow slavery.” Yellow slavery was the variation of white slavery (known today as sex trafficking) that described the practice when Asian women were the victims. This thesis attempts to determine several of the reasons why Chinese women were included as victims in an otherwise exclusively white victim pool. One of the central reasons was the actual existence of the practice, which this thesis attempts to verify through the critical examination of found contracts and testimony of Chinese women. However, beyond just the existence of the practice of yellow slavery, many individuals used the sexual exploitation of Chinese women for their own cultural, religious, and political ends. Anti-Chinese agitators leveraged the image of the Chinese slave girl to frame anti-Chinese efforts as anti-slavery efforts, as well as to depict Chinese immigrants as incapable of assimilating into American culture and adhering to American ideals of freedom. Additionally, white missionaries created mission homes to shelter and protect the Chinese women and girls escaping white slavery. However, within these homes, the missionaries were then able to push their perceived cultural and religious superiority by pushing the home’s inmates into their ideals of Protestant, middle-class, white womanhood.

BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. ABSTRACT This qualitative study explores how Chinese American women, as American- born children of new Chinese immigrants, have perceived and interpreted who they are, and how they become who they are while adapting to American society and negotiating with the interplay of race, ethnicity, class, and gender. Drawing on in- depth interviews with twenty-seven Chinese American women from two universities located on the East Coast, I argue that their segmented assimilation processes involving ongoing negotiations between maintaining ties with their ethnic and cultural backgrounds and selective integration into the mainstream of the society, which, to some extent, are subject to and predetermined by their parents‘ pre- and post- migration conditions. At the same time, my participants also struggled with how their self-defined ethnic identity intertwined with a socially constructed racial identity. My data show multiple settlement patterns among new Chinese immigrants, including traditional ethnic enclaves, and suburban white areas as well as a diverse class composition of college-educated professionals, small business owners, and working-class laborers.
