Robbin Osborne—Secretary Shag music covers a broad spectrum of formats. Even Shaggers don't agree on the best songs or styles of music. I had hoped to include a variety of audio sounds 828.312.3158 here to let you actually hear some of the various types of music. However, my server Will Sloan—Sgt-at-Arms informed me that I've overloaded . . . sooooooo . . . I'll just have to list the a few songs 828.261.6066 that you might recognize. Board Members You may be familiar with either the artist or the song . . . perhaps by another artist. Shake, Rattle, & Roll, as example, has appeared on the Shag circuit by Lowell Fulson, CB Wolfe 704.740.7068 Bill Haley, Billy Swan, Joe Turner, Jackie Wilson, and Huey Lewis & The News!!! The following play list samplers is just that! The songs and artists that are included in no way shape or form rep- resent ALL of the songs. AND, some songs may, in your humble opinion, be more suitable under a different for- mat. But, this is only a SAMPLER -- it's not written in stone -- just the net!!! Now...The Play List Samplers

Editorial: In the late 50s, early 60s I listened to WLAC radio station in Nashville, a blues station. I could only get it late at night in Hickory when they boosted their signal. I had to listen quietly in my room as this was not the main stream music you were suppose to listen to. Some of the songs were on the Juke Boxes at the O.D. Pavilion & Pad. You could only listen to the that type of music in certain venues at that time. We would go to the music store in downtown Hickory on Saturdays. They had enclosed music booths so you could play the 45s and not bother the other customers. Sometimes we would pile 5 or 6 of us in the booth (very crowded). When we heard a special dance song on WLAC we would try to find and play it in the booth and sometimes buy it for our 45 collection at home. My point is each of us have reference points that may determine the type of music we like. So no one is right or wrong in what they enjoy. The important thing is what style or styles makes you want to dance to it. Most of us like a mixture and that is OK too! (I’ve included a little history of WLAC on Page 3.)

WLAC History (Reprint from internet): The nighttime R & B years…... In the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, WLAC was legendary for its quartet of nighttime shows hosted by Gene Nobles, "John R." (John Richbourg), Herman Grizzard, and Bill "Hossman" (or simply "Hoss") Allen. Thanks to the station's clear channel designation, the signal reached most of the Eastern and Midwestern . WLAC described itself as the nighttime station for half the nation with African- American listeners, especially in the Deep South as the intended audience of the programs. Further, several foreign countries, particularly islands in the Caribbean and southern Canada, were within range of the station's nighttime signal. WLAC was also popular with some young white teenagers. Radio historians believe that the nightly "Rhythm and blues" WLAC shows, in part, laid the foundational audience for the phenomenon that began in the late 1950s.
