Signed: 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is primarily a cultural history of abortion in the early medieval West. It is a historical study of perceptions, rather than the practice, of abortion. The span covered ranges from the sixth century, when certain localised ecclesiastical initiatives in the form of councils and sermons addressed abortion, through to the ninth century, when some of these initiatives were integrated into pastoral texts produced in altogether different locales. The thesis uses a range of predominantly ecclesiastical texts – canonical collections, penitentials, sermons, hagiography, scriptural commentaries, but also law- codes – to bring to light the multiple ways in which abortion was construed, experienced and responded to as a moral and social problem. Although there is a concerted focus upon the ecclesiastical tradition on abortion, a focus which ultimately questions how such a tradition ought to be understood, the thesis also explores the broader cultural significance of abortion. Early medieval churchmen, rulers, and jurists saw multiple things in abortion and there were multiple perspectives upon abortion. The thesis illuminates the manifold and, occasionally, surprising ways in which abortion was perceived in relation to gender, sexuality, politics, theology and the church. The history of early medieval abortion has been largely underwritten. Moreover, it has been inadequately historicised. -

The Self-Coronations of Iberian Kings: a Crooked Line
THE SELF-Coronations OF IBERIAN KINGS: A CROOKED LINE JAUME AURELL UNIVERSIDAD DE NAVARRA SpaIN Date of receipt: 10th of March, 2012 Final date of acceptance: 4th of March, 2014 ABSTRACT This article focuses on the practice of self-coronation among medieval Iberian Castilian kings and its religious, political, and ideological implications. The article takes Alfonso XI of Castile self-coronation (1332) as a central event, and establishes a conceptual genealogy, significance, and relevance of this self-coronation, taking Visigothic, Asturian, Leonese, and Castilian chronicles as a main source, and applying political theology as a methodology. The gesture of self-coronation has an evident transgressive connotation which deserves particular attention, and could throw some light upon the traditional debate on the supposed “un-sacred” kingship of Castilian kings1. Alfonso XI of Castile and Peter IV of Aragon’s peculiar and transgressive gestures of self-coronation in the fourteenth century are very familiar to us, narrated in detail as they are in their respective chronicles2. Yet, their ritual transgression makes us wonder why they acted in this way, whether there were any precedents for this particular gesture, and to what extent they were aware of the different rates at which the anointing and coronation ceremonies were introduced into their own kingdoms, in their search for justification of the self-coronation3. -
Julian of Toledo's Historia Wambae
Wolfram Drews The Imageofthe Christian Ruler in the Catholic Monarchy of Visigothic Spain: Julian of Toledo’s Historia Wambae King Wamba(672– 680) was arguably the last strong ruler of Visigothic Spainable to assert royal power against aristocratic factions and ecclesiastical authorities alike. He is famous in medievalhistory first and foremost for the ecclesiastical inaugura- tion ritual at the beginning of his reign, which involved the first attested royal unc- tion in medieval Europe. The description of Wamba’sroyal inauguration comes from bishop Julian of Toledo, who was later involved in Wamba’sdeposition. In his Histor- ia Wambae,hedescribes Wamba as an exemplary Christian ruler,aprinceps religio- sus,imbued with Christian virtues. He contrasts the ideal figureusing the usurper Paul as an example of abad, un-Christian ruler,depicted as atyrant supported by hostileforces from the outside. The Historia Wambae mayhavebeen written after Wamba’sdeposition, reflectingpolitical interests of aristocratic elites duringthe reign of his second successor,king Egica.The literary figure of Wambaiscompletely different from the historical Wamba. Julian of Toledo aptlyconstructs the imageofan ideal Christian ruler,following literary models from the Roman past,such as Sallust, and the Old Testament.Christian kingship appears as afusion of both Roman and biblical traditions but geared to the conditions of late Visigothic Spain and, in par- ticular,toits leadingecclesiastical circles,which interestingly had been in opposition to the historical Wamba. -
The History of the Shroud
MARK GUSCIN: THE HISTORY OF THE SHROUD Part One – Before the Thirteenth Century It is often said that the Shroud has no documented history before the thirteenth century; while it is true that we are all aware of the immense difficulties of establishing the Shroud’s history, the statement as such is somewhat misleading. It is often understood as meaning that there are no references to the Shroud before this date, and this is simply not true. In fact, there are numerous references to the conservation of the burial shroud of Jesus of Nazareth from the very beginning of the Christian era – the problem comes when we try to equate the shroud mentioned in these documents with the cloth now kept in Turin. This is a very significant point: sceptics often say that there are no references to the Shroud – but there are. Hence in the title of this paper I have deliberately omitted the words “of Turin” after the word “Shroud”. Nevertheless, we are going to start this overview with an exception. There is one unmistakeable documentary reference to the Shroud of Turin from before the twelfth century. Well known to all Shroud scholars, its true significance is often overlooked. I am referring of course to Codex Pray, whose name is often misunderstood (at least in the English speaking world) as a reference to prayer. In fact, the name comes from the Jesuit György Pray, who discovered the manuscript in 1770. It is kept in the National Széchenyi library in Budapest, Hungary. It is the earliest known manuscript with a text in the Hungarian language, and so is an important national treasure. -

The Hagiography, a privileged source for the analysis of the medieval imaginary, can show us elements that concerning daily life, practices, the history of the hagiographic characters and its social environment, and is an instrument often used pedagogically in the religious education of members of the clergy and the whole audience, by the example of holiness and the actions of man or woman who becomes a mediator of the causes of God. This work aims to analyze, through the mediaeval imaginary and Critical Discourse Analysis, one of the shorter and less explored hagiographies produced on one of the great bishops of the Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo (7-8th centuries A.D.), the Vita Vel Gesta Sancti Ildefonsi Toletaneae Sedis Metropolitani Episcopi, the Life of Saint Ildefonsus of Toledo. Beyond the authorship and tradition of the work, the political quarrels that involved the monarchy and the Visigothic clergy in the period, the supernatural and symbolic elements that had the purpose of impressing and embracing the hearers and readers, we see in this Vita a direct intention to expand at Toledo and, later in other places of Europe, the Marian cult and the figure of one of its most faithful devotees, Ildefonsus of Toledo. -

Reynolds, Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies During the past quarter century very few full or virtually full manuscripts written in the Beneventan script of southern Italy and Dalmatia have been discovered and reported. Most of the manuscripts reported since Lowe’s magisterial work2 on the script have been libelli, stray folios, fragments, and offsets.3 But two extraordinary full or virtually full manuscripts have recently come to light and have been reported. The first of these was put on auction a few years back by Sotheby’s in London.4 In their sale catalogue, the manuscript, described as coming from a private collection, was dated to the fifteenth century and the sale price was estimated at about GBP 4,000. -

TOMASZ BAĆ The Renewal of the Ambrosian and the Hispano-Mozarabic Liturgy after the Second Vatican Council The renewal of the liturgy and its general reform made after the Second Vatican Council generally concerns the Roman Rite, which all instruc- tions of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium refer to. The conciliar fathers were well aware of the fact that there is a need for renewing other rites and traditions existing in the Church.1 In the introduction to the first conciliar constitution it was stated that: “In faithful obedience to tradition, the sacred Council declares that holy Mother Church holds all lawfully acknowledged rites to be of equal right and dignity; that she wishes to preserve them in the future and to foster them in every way. The Council also desires that, where necessary, the rites be revised carefully in the light of sound tradition, and that they be given new vigor to meet the circumstances and needs of modern times” (Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium, 4). In the Latin Church, from among many local rites which, throughout centuries and alongside the Roman Rite, served as evidence of the rich- ness of the Christian liturgy, tradition and culture, only two rites were 1 In the context of liturgy renewal after the Second Vatican Council the terms “rite” and “liturgy” may be considered to be synonyms, although their meaning is not, in fact, identical; cf. Chase1 Aquinas Institute of Theology Abstract Baptism played a key role in Visigothic Spain. Jamie Wood has argued that this was the result of attempts by religious and secular authorities to navigate the transition from Arianism to orthodoxy, and to forge a common Spanish identity. This article places Wood in dialogue with Christian McConnell, whose work has reframed our understanding of initiation in Visigothic Spain. This article argues that the blessing of chrism was the central symbol by which Visigothic bishops asserted their authority in order to stabilize the Church and in turn the Visigothic State. Este articulo pone a Wood en dialogo con Christian McConnell, cuya obra ha cambiado el pensamiento actual sobre la iniciación en el Reino Visigodo en España. El presente artículo argumenta que la bendición del crisma fue el símbolo central que utilizaban los obispos para ejercer su autoridad con el fin de estabilizar la Iglesia y el Estado visigodo.
