It was a pleasure to know Theresa and Richard while he was spending several months working with John Vane in the Pharmacology Dept: at The Royal College of Surgeons in Lon- don. Their fruitful scientific collaboration and deep personal friendship were essential for Polish research at that – difficult for Poland – period of its history. At that time Richard was Professor and Head of the Pharmacology Dept. at The Krakow Academy of Medicine. It was when I first visited Poland I learnt of the courage of Polish people, especially during the 2nd World War and the Communist regime when all perspectives for development of scientific research were in many ways constrained. During my visits in Poland I saw many places of interest, among them was a school. On seeing some photographs shown to me there, to my remark “there are only ones of war”, the teacher replied: “that is our history “. Each visit was enhanced by the kindness of those I met and who taught me so much. I also remember the shock of my Auschwitz visit, so deeply intense... I am happy to believe that today the country of my friends is fine and welcoming land. It remains – and will always remain – close in my heart.

Here are my thoughts on the JMRC meetings over the years:

I have long admired the work and the ideals of the Jagiellonian Medical Research Center. The year that the JMRC was formed, 1992, I was a visiting scientist in the laboratory of Sir John Vane in London. I was rather young then and it was a very exciting time for me. I met great scientists from around the world including Professor Ryszard Gryglewski. He and I shared an office in London for a short but very scientifically exciting time. I am honored to say that Professor Gryglewski and I became true friends. I was honored to be a part of the original JMRC Founda- tion international symposium in 1993. Since that time I have traveled many times to Krakow, my favorite city in the world, to speak at JMRC meetings, most recently at the symposium that took place in 2017. In my opinion, a great strength of the JMRC meetings has always been that they provide a unique opportunity to expose young scientists to some of the very the best established scientists in the world in a friendly and collegial environment. This allows for wonderful infor- mal interactions. The speakers were always outstanding scientists from all over Europe and the United States and included the Nobel Prize Laureates Sir John Vane, Robert Furchgott, Ferid Murad and Louis Ignarro. In addition, Professor Jack McGiff was always at the symposia and played a major role in the proceedings. All of these great scientists interacted with younger in- vestigators and in some cases formed important and meaningful scientific relationships with them. An additional strength of the JMRC meetings was my opportunity to meet outstanding scientists from Poland. In addition to Professor Gryglewski, I came to know many other outstanding Polish scientists. Professors Andrew Szczeklik and Stefan Chłopicki are two wonderful examples. They both became more than just fellow scientists, they became true friends. I especially enjoyed the grand dinners that were associated with the meetings. These dinners were often in castles or in places of historical importance. I loved the fact that you never just attended a JMRC meeting; you were also immersed in the history and traditions of Po- land. I had the opportunity through these meetings to attend an opera, to visit several castles, to meet the people of Poland and to see my favorite painting in the world, the lady with the white ermine by Leonardo da Vinci. REMINISCENCES

The JMRC symposia organised by Richard Gryglewski, were some of the most memorable and enjoyable events of my professional life. During the communist years in the 1980s, Jack and I drove by car to Krakow, crossing the English Channel to Ostend in Belgium or the North Sea to Hamburg in Germany. In later years, when air travel became more popular, we booked flights directly from London to Krakow. Travelling to Poland was a particular pleasure for me and always a thrilling experience to hear Polish spoken all around me and feeling that I was returning home to my own country and to my own people. The core of these meetings was the scientific content, consisting of the latest research by leaders in the field of the topic of the symposium. Some of these topics included: “The En- dothelium”, “Stroke”, “Anti-inflammatory Drugs” and “Cyclo-oxygenase Enzymes”. The theme of the last Symposium we attended, in 2009, was a Memorial for John Robert Vane who had left us in 2004 and who had been an honoured guest at almost all the JMRC meetings. Sir John Vane had been awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the mechanism of action of aspirin and for his work in the field of prostaglandins. As well as the interesting science, the participants of the symposia were treated to different splendid social events. During an early meeting Maria Chechlinska organised a magical trip floating by raft on the Dunajec river to a mountain village where we met the local mountain people (gorale). On another occasion the guests were transported to a magnificent barbecue in the Carpathian Mountains and baked their own potatoes in the huge camp fires. During each meeting there was a special dinner for the participants. One year this was held in the salt mines in Wieliczka, and was followed by a great ball which was very much enjoyed by everyone. In 1999 the dinner was held in the beautiful Villa Decius, outside Krakow, and in 2009 Maria ar- ranged a special meal in a beautiful restaurant for the John Vane Memorial Symposium. Even during the years of austerity in Poland, during the communist days, Richard, Teresa his wife and Maria managed with great effort to arrange delicious food for their guests’ lunches and dinners and to accommodate everyone in comfortable hotels. One year, our younger daughter, Jose- phine, shared a magnificent suite with us in a well known Krakow hotel. Sadly, the last meeting we attended was the Memorial for Sir John Vane in 2009. It included a talk given by me entitled, “Vane’s discovery of the mechanism of action of aspirin changed our understanding of its clinical pharmacology”. This talk explained the experimental evidence which led to the elucidation of the mode of action of aspirin and how it inhibited the cyclooxygenase enzymes and prevented the release of prostaglandins. It went on to describe how cyclooxygenase-2 was discovered which accounted for the anti-inflammatory efficacy of- as A co pamiętają nasi przyjaciele z tamtych dni? The talk concluded with the discovery by Dan Simmons of a putative COX-3, which was particularly sensitive to inhibition by paracetamol/acetaminophen. The inhibition of a third cyclooxygenase enzyme would explain the mechanism by which paracetamol exhibits analge- sic and antipyretic activity but lacks the ability to suppress symptoms of inflammation. At this meeting, we all enjoyed superb dinners from which I have saved some photographs of special friends, some of whom sadly are no longer with us. These pictures are a permanent reminder of a very happy and special dinner together.

MEMORIES OF THE JMRC

My trips to attend meetings of the JMRC are amongst the most treasured of my scientific memories. I first began attending scientific meetings in Poland in the 1970’s, before the official founding of the JMRC. Our host at that time was Richard Gryglewski. I had first met Richard when he made a series of working visits to John Vane’s Department of Pharmacology at the Royal College of Surgeons in London in the 1960s. I was also working in that lab during those years and viv- idly recall working with Richard on the cascade superfusion technique during his visits. Other scientific visitors from Poland who also worked with us in that department during those years on one or more occasions included Christina Herbaczynska-Cedro and Janina Staszewska- -Barczak. Richard (and Teresa) as well as Janina and several other Polish friends and colleagues also visited us later in the 1970s after John had moved his group to the Wellcome Foundation (in those days a pharmaceutical company based in Kent, UK). Indeed, during one of these visits in 1976, Richard played a key role in the discovery of prostacyclin by the group. During this exciting time, members of the Vane lab also made reciprocal visits to Kraków and thus we became acquainted with more Polish scientists many of whom such as Andrew Szczeklik, Barbara and Jacek Spławinski, later became my personal friends. In those days of course, Poland was going through a different, more difficult period, of its history but notwithstanding the privations of those years, our Polish colleagues always went to extraordinary lengths to make us feel welcome and we always greatly enjoyed our trips for social reasons as well, of course, for the scientific benefits we gained. All these events occurred before the foundation in 1992, by Richard Gryglewski of the Jagiellonian Medical Research Centre (JMRC Foundation), but because of the bonds which had already formed between us our trips to attend meetings of the JMRC, were almost like returning home! Our Polish hosts during the 1990s included, of course, Richard Gryglewski (often accompanied by Teresa) as well as Andrew Szczeklik, Christina Herbaczynska-Cedro and later, Stefan Chłopicki. As always, Maria Chechlińska provided the indispensable organisational glue that held it all together and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that everything went smoothly. From the UK, I recall that regular visitors usually included Jack and Renia Botting, Brendan Whittle, and myself with others such as Gustav Born joining us on some occasions. Jack McGiff and Randy Sprague, both of whom had worked with John Vane, formed the nucleus of the US ‘delegation’ while Paola Patrignani and Carlo Patrono often attended representing Italy. John Vane, of course, was almost always there and was often accompanied by his wife Daphne and sometimes his daughters Nikki and Mandy too. What did we discuss at these meetings? Well, the scientific diet was varied as every good diet should be. The pharmacology of the cardiovascular system, platelets and prostaglandins seem to have been more or less constant themes but in the main, delegates took the opportunity to bring their colleagues up-to-date with their own fields of interest whatever they were. Looking back though my slides, I see that I often talked about the mechanism of action of the NSAIDs, glucocorticoids or the cromone anti allergic drugs. These meetings were an excellent forum for relaxed discussion of experimental and clinical science and one that became increas- ingly precious as many large-scale conferences ran parallel sessions and a tight schedule that didn’t always allow for this type of reflective comment and dialogue. In addition to the science of course, there were the social events. Spending a few days in the (by now bustling and vibrant) Kraków was always a pleasure and the conference dinners, delightful culinary and collegial events. There was often the opportunity to combine visits with further sight-seeing in Poland and our attentive hosts often organised trips for us to Zakopane or the Wieliczka Salt Mine. The 2004 meeting of the JMRC was overshadowed by John Vane’s illness and his subsequent death later that year saddened many in the JMRC community. The 2009 meeting of the Foun- dation was, appropriately, held in John’s memory and featured talks from many of his close colleagues including Richard Gryglewski, Jack McGiff, Christina Herbaczynska-Cedro, Gus Born and Randy Sprague. Daphne Vane kept up the family connection by representing the Vane family and opened the symposium with a short address. My paper was dedicated to John’s memory and I remember that meeting as being particularly interesting but also very nostalgic in tone. The last JMRC meeting that I attended in 2012 was organised (jointly with the JCET), not by Richard, but by his successor Stefan Chłopicki, who had taken over from Richard in 2006. Happily though, Richard and Teresa were present and very much in evidence at the conference dinner, to the delight of their many friends. The only downbeat note on that occasion was the news of the death of Andrew Szczeklik that year. Andrew was greatly admired by all of us who had come to know him over the years. The JMRC played an important part in the career of many young scientists from around the world and was certainly important in cementing Anglo-Polish collaborations over the years. The meetings that I attended were sustained by the Gryglewski-Vane friendship but nothing lasts forever. With these two giants of pharmacology no longer involved I am sure that the Foundation will go forward in the same spirit and achieve even greater prominence as a forum for promoting a free exchange of scientific ideas and culture between peoples of different -na tions. I still wear my JMRC tie with pride! November, 2018

MINUTES FROM MY ATTENDING ANNUAL MEETINGS OF JMRC FOUNDATION IN KRAKOW

I was involved in the activity of JMRC Foundation headed by the outstanding Polish pharmacologist professor Ryszard Gryglewski on the recommendation of professor Stefan Angiel- sky – an outstanding Polish biochemist and great friend of prof. Gryglewski. That happened because I have co-organized together with the leaders of Polish Biochemical Society the first official celebration of professor Jakub Parnas. Parnas is considered to be a “father” of Polish biochemistry, and during 1920–1941, he was a leader of the biochemical studies in Lviv – at the time Lwow (Poland). I was a Co-organizer of the 1st Parnas conference (Lviv, 1996), 2nd Parnas conference (Gdansk, 1998), and 3rd Parnas conference (Lviv, 2000). I am happy indeed that prof. Gryglewski was a key-note speaker at the 1st and 2nd Parnas conferences. I suggest that these two great Polish scientists – prof. Gryglewski and prof. Angielsky – initiated and supported my election as a foreign member of the Polish Academy of Science and Arts (Cracow), and I am really proud of that fact. My modest thank for that award was my recommendation to elect prof. Gryglewski as a Professor Honoris Causa at Danylo Halytsky National Medical University in Lviv. That recommendation was met very positively by the communities of Lviv biologists, pharmacologists, and clinicians, and we listened to a perfect, as usual, lecture of prof. Gryglewski at a big scientific council at the medical university. I participated in most annual meetings organized by the JMRC Foundation in Cracow. It was nice to see tight collaboration of prof. Gryglewski with his wife during organizing and conducting these meetings. Such collaboration is rare to observe nowadays. Another issue interesting for me was a way of selecting the lecturers for the meetings organized by prof. Gryglewski. First- ly, the number of participants was no more than 35 people, and that permitted all participants to be like a member of one scientific family. The program of the meeting was so interesting and intensive that nobody thought about the individual sightseeing in nice Cracow. At most meetings, the key-note speakers were the Noble Prize winners that created a special attraction for the participants. Besides, the venues for most meetings were located in the ancient part of Cracow that also created a special atmosphere of old dispute clubs that were known in the middle ages. Secondly, there were no open calls for the meetings organized by prof. Gryglewski. Once I asked him – why, and his answer was “I would like to have at our meetings only people whom I really respect and with whom I am getting pleasure to stay”. It should be stressed that such answer is a privilege of only great scientists who could allow themselves to demonstrate openly their personal attitude to the representatives of the surrounding social medium. Many times, on invitation, I visited the apartment of prof. Gryglewski, and I do remember special atmosphere at the dinners prepared by his charming wife. These meetings were always taking place at lighted candles and with a demonstration of interesting documents and pictures from the life and scientific activity of prof. Gryglewski, for example, his meetings with the Pope, Jan-Paul the 2nd, his election for the position of the Rector of Jagiellonian University, or from his visiting or history of a lovely city Vilnius (Vilno). As noted above, the attendance of the Noble Prize winners was a common deal at the annual meetings organized by the JMRC Foundation headed by prof. Gryglewski. Due to participation in those meetings, I got a chance to contact closely with three of them – prof. Luis Ignarro (USA), prof. Farid Murad (USA), and prof. Sir John Vane (UK). For the first time, I met prof. Ignarro in Los Angeles (USA) where I worked at Burns and Allen Research Institute of Ce- dar-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC). I was packing my books and papers for mailing them from the office of Senior Vice-President of CSMC, Dr. Shlomo Melmed, who was also the Head of the Department of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes at that Center where I worked in 1999–2000. The Secretary of the Senior Vice-President already left for home, and the Noble Prize winner was waiting politely in the office where no other people were present but me. Thus, I got a chance to talk privately to prof. Ignarro for almost 20 min, and found him to be a very modest and intelligent man. I have asked him how far to the East he was there in Europe, and he answered that he visited only the Budapest or Warsaw, however, he remembered that Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine, my native country. Then we talked a little bit about the signaling mechanisms in the mammalian cells, since prof. Ignarro is a great specialist in evaluating the role of gaseous regulatory agents, particularly the nitric oxide, in physiological and pathologi- cal processes in the organism. My 2nd meeting with prof. Ignarro happened at one of the meetings organized by prof. Gryglewski, the Head of the JMRC Foundation. I would like to remind those who were present at that meeting an interesting story told by prof. Ignarro in his key-note lecture. He told a real story how he submitted an application for a membership at the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, and in two weeks, he got a rejection telling that there are many talented scientists who pretend for that nomination and the competition is very tight. The next day, prof. Ignarro was awarded with the Noble Prize. He got that news in plane flying from the USA to Italy for some meeting, and the team and all passengers congratulated him sincerely. One day later, prof. Ignarro got a letter from the President of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA with kind invitation to be a member of the Academy as a very merited scientist in his field. Another story happened at the meeting of the JMRC Foundation in Cracow during presenting the Noble Prize winner prof. Farid Murad by prof. Stefan Angielsky who is known not only as a great scientist but also as a very witty man. Prof. Angielsky told in his presentation that of course, prof. Murad is an outstanding scientists but he (Angielsky) has some very similar characteristics with prof. Murad. One of these characteristics is that both of them have four daughters, however, as a “simple” professor, prof. Angielsky stopped his experiments in the re- production, while future Noble Prize winner, prof. Murad continued his experiments in that field and his 5th child was a son. During all meetings of the JMRC Foundation in Cracow, the Noble Prize winner Sir John Vane behaved himself as a true Sir and a noble respected man. Probably, his life and education in the UK caused such behavior. It seems that many years spent by prof. Gryglewski in the UK Maria Chechlińska Dwadzieścia pięć lat JMRC z perspektywy wspomnień 72 Jagiellonian Medical Research Center – twenty five years in memories were also reflected in his character as a very noble and intelligent man who respects both his colleagues and himself. Generally, people with such character are always much more respected in society than people who push off other people around themselves for reaching their private goals. Thus, for me personally, the annual meetings of the JMRC Foundation organized by prof. Gryglewski in Cracow serve not only as a great platform for exchanging scientific ideas and finding new ideas, but also as a social medium in which the best people’s features can be rec- ognized and followed. Dear Professor Gryglewski, thank you and your team for great efforts and dedication on conducting annual meetings of the JMRC Foundation in Cracow! I would like to note that although during the next years, I have attended many interesting conferences and meetings nevertheless, I did not get such experience in my life and scientific activity.
