Only went to school until 3rd grade. Then she went to the orphanage and was adopted to work for the Fryens at their farm.

Notes for Plesant Whitlow, Sr.: Miuch of the Whitlow history is provided from research of Leonard Whitlow II, Portland, OR.

After married Tabitha Tudor, he moved briefly to Madison Co. Kentucky before moving to Barren Co. Kentucky. He and Tabitha are buried in unmarked graves in a small cemetary called the Page cemetary on State Hwy 163, about a mile north of where it intersects with Hwy 90.

Notes for Tabitha Tudor: According to information from Dean Whitlow, Old John was possibly a descendant of Pleasant Whitlow of Madison County, Kentucky (1789 tax record). Plesant may have been a descendant of a William Whitlow that married a Plesant female, as the Whitlow land appeared to be adjacent to the Plesant's land and land transactions took place between the family names.

4 He may also of had a sons named Thomas and Valentine. Information obtained from Barbara Byram Milman ([email protected]). Barbara has alot more information on this branch of the family. Her information can be found at Rootsweb Database (milman6325).

William lived in Essex County Virginia. From Virginia he moved to Bute Co., North Carolina (Bute County was later called Granville).

William was on the tax list in 1780/2 for Granville County

William was drafted in the Continental Army, but his son Jacob W. Byrum went in his place.

It would seem that William (b. 1676) had a son William who appeared briefly in Chowan Co., NC where he witnessed a deed for his cousin, John Byrom to Charles Jordon, 25 NOV 1743 and subsequently moved to Bute (later Granville) Co., NC. 1746 Granville County, North Carolina established from Edgecomb County, NC. The Boston Transcript apparently ran a Genealogical Column from 1906 - 1941. The following is from September 17, 1906.

William Byram, born Nov 17, 1764, and Peter Byram, born a year or two later, are supposed to have been sons of Edward Byram and Phebe Coe. They are ancestors of a large number of Byrams, now residing in Kentucky and Missouri, many of whom have occupied positions of public and private trust and have contributed not a little to the growth and prosperity of those states. These two brothers, William and Peter Byram, were born in that part of Virginia which afterwards became the State of Kentucky. They married sisters - William to Susan Phillips, Sept. 23, 1785, and Peter to Lucy Phillips, about the same time. They were the daughters of Moses Phillips. William and Susan raised a family of seven daughters and two sons; Peter and Lucy had six sons and three daughters." This information, like any information, can be faulty. For instance, I have seen no other reference to a William or Peter being sons of Edward Byram and Phebe Coe. To the best of my knowledge, Edward and Phoebe's eleven children were all born in Pennsylvania between 1762 and 1785. It doesn't seem to fit your line but it mentions Kentucky and Missouri so I thought I would muddy the water and send it to you. It can be more fodder for your files!

About William and Peter Byram, they were sons of William Byram who married in Stafford Co. VA, to Sarah Gough. They are listed in the Boston Transcript but are not the sons of Edward Byram. The paper was incorrect. There are other errors in that series of articles but in the most part the newspaper did a good job on the Mass. Byram branch. Edward is from a branch of the family which started in MA with Nicholas in the 1630's. William and Peter are in a branch of the family which started with Abraham Byram who came to VA in 1651.

I have been told that the earliest ancestor of the known Byrum line was named William. I have not been able to verify that to my satisfaction, but it does seem reasonable. I have no information about his parents or spouse, except that, again I was told, his wife was a Cherokee Indian. That, too, has merit. Virginia Byrum Wallace has written a soft back book on the Byrums of >Steel Creek. Steel Creek is an area just south of Charlotte, NC. >According to her, the way they spell the name usually determinds where they came from. Massachusetts descendent spells it Byram, Byrom denotes >Georgia and Byrum is a Virginia or Indiana descendent. According to Virginia their were Thomas, William, James Byrom and their cousins John, >Peter and Henry Byrom came to VA in 1696. The cousins settled in NC in >Bertie, Chowan, and Edgecomb Counties.

I have been looking for the parents, and wife, of William Byrum who is found in NC, probably Wake, Bute, and Orange Counties, but moved to Madison Co., Ky. about 1800. Tradition is that William lived to be over 100 years old, and that he married a Cherokee woman and they had many children. Some of the children's names were Jacob, Henry, John, and James. They came to America about 1696. I think they had a brother or two who moved to NC in the early 1700's. I have had no luck in putting William in this family.

The children of William Byram Sr. are Jacob, John, Henry, William Jr., Ridley, Archibald, James, and Mary "Polly". Jacob the eldest was born in 1761 in Virginia, the others in NC. William Sr. was living in Bute/Granville area of NC by 1765. William & Ridley on 1799 Madison Co, KY tax list. All the sons were on Madison tax lists of 1806: William, Ridley, Henry, John, and James. William Sr. appears last on 1800 census of Granville, along with sons John and Archibald. In Madison, they all lived on Paint Lick Creek. William Sr. on 1808 tax list and 1810 census of Madison. John Byram moved to Barren Co. about 1808, same time as Granville & Pleasant Whitlow.

Notes for Sally--Cherokee Indiana: From www.rootsweb.org

1820 Census Madison Co. KY: Salley Byram Males 1/-10 1/16-18 1/18-26 1/18-26 Females 1/-10 1/20-16 1/45+ Thought to be full Cherokee Indian.

Salley is placed as the wife of William as she appears in the 1820 census and William does not, apparently dying after 1810 and before 1820.

5 However, two sons of William married Sarahs, and the census listing could be that of Salley (Sarah), a possible widow of Ridley Byrum who does not appear in the 1820 census. Sarah, wife of son Henry, would be too young and he lived beyond 1820. Barbara, the Salley Byram (as spelled) in the 1820 Madison Co., KY census is over 45 yrs' of age with 1 female under 10 and 1 female 10-16. 1 male under 10; 1 male 16- 25; and 1 male 25-45. Salley is head of household. In 1830 there is a Farah Byram (I would think this to be Sarah or Salley) she is head of houshold and aged 50 but under 60 (by the 1820 census we know that she is over 55 in 1830). There is 1 male 15-but under 20. This Farah or Sarah and a Henry Byram are in the same age category and the eldest in the 1830 census for Madison Co. By 1840, Sarah or Farah is missing from the census but Henry still lives as the eldest of the listed Byrams. A Sary Byrum is mother of the bride for the marrage of Hannah Byrum to John Masters 29 Jan. 1828. A Sary Biram is mother of the bride for the marriage of Jane Biram to David Vincent 29 Dec. 1823. I believe that all of these Ladies are the same, and her age only leads to William as her husband because the others are younger or in the case of Henry, the head of another houshold.

Notes for William Byrom: From www.rootsweb.org

This bunch of the Byrom's came from Prescot Parish, Lancashire, England. Thomas is the oldest of the three brothers (1/2 brother James and full brother William), to come to Virginia in about 1694. They started the Virginia branch. He may have paid his passage over for there is no record that he signed an indenture. He may have accompanied his cousin John Byrom, also the oldest of three brothers who settled in Virginia. In all probability Thomas and John came to investigate conditions in America before their younger brothers made the trip to the Colonies. William and 1/2 brother James indentures have not been found, but records show they were brought to Virginia by Edward Hill who obtained a land patent 25 OCT 1695 for transporting 102 persons including William and James. Their surname was misspelled in the passenger list as Bereme. After Thomas' brothers arrived he moved about an hundred miles south to a place near Elizabeth City in Pasquotank Co., NC where he died unmarried. In his will dated 13 MAR 1710 he leaves his worldly goods to his "well beloved friend" Benjamin West who is also named as an executor with John Palin.

At this time we do not know the name of the ship that brought over James and William. Chip Byrom, Seymour Byrom's grandson, has hired a proffessional genealogist in Virginia in an attempt to locate this info as well as some other facts. The spelling of the surname (and misspellings) is many. To name of few Bereme, Buron, Byron, Byrom, Byrum, Byram and a few others. It has made it rather difficult to track. Many individual changed the spelling on their own and some where just misspelled. It is believed that Nicholas Byram had his named mispelled upon having arrived in Virginia and just kept it that way. He is the anscetor of the Mass. line. Most of those with the surname as BYRUM descend from Byrant Byrom (spelled his name several ways) he is the son of Henry Byrom who is the cousin of our William and James. Most of those with the surmane as BYROM come from TN and GA and descend through James and Elizabeth Byrom grandson of James and great-nephew of your William. This is by no means accuarte but a basic pattern.

There is no record of William's marriage or of his heirs but records show he witnessed a deed for his nephew Henry in King and Queen Co., VA in 1724. It would seem that he had a son William who appeared briefly in Chowan Co., NC where he witnessed a deed for his cousin, John Byrom to Charles Jordon, 25 NOV 1743 and subsequently moved to Bute (later Granville) Co., NC.

Most of the info we have came from a book written by Henry Harbin Byrom in 1940. He had made reference to the fact of the brothers but was not clear. Last year he confirmed the info for us. My best source for this connection comes from the book, 'The Byron Chronicle' by

6 Mark Bennett Byron. He has the family going back to 1066 and list several sources and documentation for his work. *Information obtained from 'The Byron Chronicle, A History of the Byron & Byrom Families, 1066-1800' by Mark Bennett Byron III, 1965.

It appears there was also a grandson Jacob William, born c1762, who fought in the American Revolution. Here is his pension record: Jacob William Byrom stated he was the son of William who was to be drafted in the Continental Army. Jacob went in his father's place because he was the oldest and because there were several small children. Jacob stated he was born in VA and left there young in 1765 so he did not remember the County. His father, William moved to Bute which was later called Granville Co., NC where he is shown on the tax lists in 1780-2. Jacob was living in Cumberland Co., where the 1790 census shows him married with two daughters. Then he moved to Wake Co., NC where in 1835 he gave his age as 73. The last Pension payment was made in 1844. This is all that is known of Williams' descendants.

The connection going back are pretty well documented between Henry Byrom, Mark Byron and research done by Seymour Byrom back in to sixties. Seymour hired a proffessional genealogist to do a family tree which I recently obtained a copy of. With few exceptions they agree with what I have, with only some dates in conflict. I also was in contact with two sisters in England who have confirmed my info. There info was from a great-great-great Aunt who had the tree done sometime in the 17th century. I have yet to receive a copy of this but anxiously await it. 1676 Birth 1695 Transported to America by Edward Hill 1710 Brother Thomas's Will Dated 1724 Witnessed a deed for his nephew Henry in King and Queen Co., VA 1743 Son William Witnesses a deed Chowan Co., NC and subsequently moved to Bute (later Granville) Co., NC. 1762 Grandson James William born
