The local organizing institutions are the Department of Social Science History and the Department of History at the University of Helsinki, in collaboration with the Finnish Economic History Association. The organisers sincerely hope that this event will attract scholars from all parts of the world and offer a forum for fruitful discussion of recent developments in this important area of historical research. It is also hoped that this week will give congress participants a chance to become acquainted with the capital of Finland and its surroundings. Following the first and second calls for proposals, the Executive Committee of the IEHA has approved 126 sessions for inclusion in the academic programme of the congress. They will cover periods from antiquity to the present day, and a variety of regions around the world. The list of sessions is given in this brochure as well as on the congress website: www.helsinki.fi/iehc2006, which will be updated at regular intervals. This brochure also contains practical information on travelling and accommodation, as well as on the congress venue. It also lists a choice of excursions to be arranged during the event as well as a number of post-congress tours. The Executive Committee of the IEHA decided not to include a single dedicated excursion day, but to offer various trips around the middle of the week, from Tuesday to Thursday. There are many local agencies offering a wide variety of outings, and the people at the congress information desk will be happy to give more details. We look forward to seeing you in Helsinki! Printed on Recycled Paper 2 Chairman’s remarks So, we come towards the end of another successful U3A year. Saturday’s morning talk, and this newsletter, are the last of the 2018-19 session before we gear up to start again in September. The success of any U3A year, and the ‘gearing up’ process before the next one begins – the membership renewals process involves a great deal of work on the part of a team of office volunteers, and our Membership Secretary in particular – depend entirely on the willingness and commitment of the different teams of volunteers who make it all possible. So, it is appropriate for my open remark to be a heartfelt ‘Thank you’ to all those of you who volunteer in any capacity and thereby keep our branch running.

  • UFC on FUEL TV: STRUVE Vs. MIOCIC
UFC On FUEL TV: STRUVE vs. MIOCIC Las Vegas, Nevada – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® organization returns to England this Saturday for an all- action card at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham. In the heavyweight main event, the biggest man in the UFC® – 6ft 11inch Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve – collides with unbeaten uber-athlete Stipe Miocic in a fight which will catapult the winner towards the top of the division. Also on the stacked television card, charismatic welterweight Dan “the Outlaw” Hardy fights in his historic hometown for the first time since April of 2008 when he takes on The Ultimate Fighter winner Amir Sadollah and, in what could be the most exciting all-British battle in Octagon® history, elite welterweight John “Hitman” Hathaway takes on John “The One” Maguire. At an open workout today, the combatants sounded ready to go to war. Stefan Struve said: “Five round fight? It’s not a five round fight. This isn’t going five. It is a one or two round fight, depending on when I finish him. I am not worried about going five rounds if it happens, I hit pads for an hour at a time and every Thursday at my gym it is pretty much fight night where we do 15 x five minute rounds. I’ve changed nothing in my training. If it goes longer, okay, but I think this is a quick fight. “A win here puts me in the top five in the world. There’s a lot of hype on this guy and he’s also coming off a big win.

The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.

Local FDXA member club is the Tampere DX-listeners club (TreDXK). Both EDXC and TreDXK, were celebrating their 50 th anniversary this year, having been founded in 1967. On 6 th December this year, Finland will also celebrate 100 years of independence from Russia. So lots to celebrate! Helsinki Central railway station. Risto outside FDXA office in Helsinki Those delegates staying in Helsinki on the day before the conference started were kindly invited on a short walking tour of some of Helsinki’s city centre attractions, led by Risto Vähäkainu of the FDXA, which ended with some welcome local refreshments at the FDXA office in Annankatu. The city of Tampere is in southern Finland, a 160km 90-minute express train ride north of the capital, Helsinki. It is sited between two lakes which are linked by the Tammerkoski, a 1km channel of rapids whose power was harnessed by the textile industry in the 19 th century, and whose heritage red brick mills still line its banks. As a result, the city is often compared to Manchester (UK), but today the old industries have gone, and it is a thriving modern technology and university city, the third largest in Finland with a population of around 220,000. The conference venue was the modern Varala Sports Institute (https://varala.fi ), sited in a lakeside forest, 3km from Tampere city centre.

SUSTAINABLE CARGO CHECK-IN SOLUTIONS FOR TALLINK SILJA OYJ Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics Master’s thesis 2021 Purnachand Valluru International Business and Entrepreneurship (IBE) Thesis Supervisor Prof. Juha Kansikas ABSTRACT Author Purnachand Valluru Tittle of thesis Sustainable Cargo Check-in Solutions for Tallink Silja Oyj Discipline Type of work International Business and Entrepreneurship Master’s thesis Time (month/year) Number of pages July 2021 69 pages Abstract The thesis marks the end of my graduation for the degree program of M.Sc. International Business and Entrepreneurship (IBE) at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. The main inspiration behind my thesis was the search for a thesis topic with pragmatic implications. It was an earned opportunity because of my participation in a maritime business case competition (IntelligenceHunt2) on behalf of Tallink Silja Oyj (Subsidary of Tallink Grupp AS). The purpose of this thesis is to explore different methods that can be implemented by Tallink Silja for sustainable and efficient check-in of cargo trucks into their vessels oper- ating in various Baltic cities. The topic explored is a real case scenario with on ground implications. My thesis aims to deliver solutions by exploring different barriers that are product of the natural evolution of human lifestyle and suggest solutions using techno- logical advancements and innovations to overcome said barriers and increase efficiency. In order to understand this qualitative and multiple case study analysis based thesis more thoroughly. I took a look at different theoretical themes such as Sustainability in logistics, Rapid ur- banisation and its effects, the need for Digitalisation and then move towards further ex- plaining the current check-in methods and finally offer our researched and recommended solutions with giving a brief idea into the challenges that company might face implement- ing these solutions.
