The workshop “The Arithmetic of Fields” focused on a series of problems concerning the interplay between number theory, arithmetic and al- gebraic geometry, Galois theory, and model theory, such as: the Galois theory of function fields / covers of varieties, rational points on varieties, Galois co- homology, local-global principles, lifting/specializing covers of curves, model theory of finitely generated fields, etc. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000): 12E30. Introduction by the Organisers The sixth conference on “The Arithmetic of Fields” was organized by Moshe Jar- den (Tel Aviv), Florian Pop (Philadelphia), and Leila Schneps (Paris), and was held in the week February 1–7, 2009. The participants came from 14 countries: Germany (14), USA (11), France (7), Israel (7), Canada (2), England (2), Austria (1), Brazil (1), Hungary (1), Italy (1), Japan (1), South Africa (1), Switzerland (1), and The Netherlands (1). All together, 51 people attended the conference; among the participants there were thirteen young researchers, and eight women. Most of the talks concentrated on the main theme of Field Arithmetic, namely Galois theory and its interplay with the arithmetic of the fields. Several talks had an arithmetical geometry flavour. All together, the organizers find the blend of young and experienced researchers and the variety of subjects covered very satisfactory. AMIE WILKINSON Introduction At the 2014 International Congress of Mathematicians in Seoul, South Korea, Franco-Brazilian mathematician Artur Avila was awarded the Fields Medal for “his profound contributions to dynamical systems theory, which have changed the face of the field, using the powerful idea of renormalization as a unifying principle.”1 Although it is not explicitly mentioned in this citation, there is a second unify- ing concept in Avila’s work that is closely tied with renormalization: Lyapunov (or characteristic) exponents. Lyapunov exponents play a key role in three areas of Avila’s research: smooth ergodic theory, billiards and translation surfaces, and the spectral theory of 1-dimensional Schr¨odinger operators. Here we take the op- portunity to explore these areas and reveal some underlying themes connecting exponents, chaotic dynamics and renormalization. But first, what are Lyapunov exponents? Let’s begin by viewing them in one of their natural habitats: the iterated barycentric subdivision of a triangle. When the midpoint of each side of a triangle is connected to its opposite vertex by a line segment, the three resulting segments meet in a point in the interior of the triangle. The barycentric subdivision of a triangle is the collection of 6 smaller triangles determined by these segments and the edges of the original triangle: Figure 1. Barycentric subdivision.     University of Wisconsin Faculty Document 2436 Madison 7 October 2013 MEMORIAL RESOLUTION OF THE FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON ON THE DEATH OF PROFESSOR EMERITA MARY ELLEN RUDIN Mary Ellen Rudin, Hilldale professor emerita of mathematics, died peacefully at home in Madison on March 18, 2013. Mary Ellen was born in Hillsboro, Texas, on December 7, 1924. She spent most of her pre-college years in Leakey, another small Texas town. In 1941, she went off to college at the University of Texas in Austin, and she met the noted topologist R.L. Moore on her first day on campus, since he was assisting in advising incoming students. He recognized her talent immediately and steered her into the math program, which she successfully completed in 1944, and she then went directly into graduate school at Austin, receiving her PhD under Moore’s supervision in 1949. After teaching at Duke University and the University of Rochester, she joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a lecturer in 1959 when her husband Walter came here. Walter Rudin died on May 20, 2010. Mary Ellen became a full professor in 1971 and professor emerita in 1991. She also held two named chairs: she was appointed Grace Chisholm Young Professor in 1981 and Hilldale Professor in 1988. She received numerous honors throughout her career. She was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and she received honorary doctor of science degrees from the University of North Carolina, the University of the South, Kenyon College, and Cedar Crest College.

    REAL PROOFS OF COMPLEX THEOREMS (AND VICE VERSA) LAWRENCE ZALCMAN Introduction. It has become fashionable recently to argue that real and complex variables should be taught together as a unified curriculum in analysis. Now this is hardly a novel idea, as a quick perusal of Whittaker and Watson's Course of Modern Analysis or either Littlewood's or Titchmarsh's Theory of Functions (not to mention any number of cours d'analyse of the nineteenth or twentieth century) will indicate. And, while some persuasive arguments can be advanced in favor of this approach, it is by no means obvious that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages or, for that matter, that a unified treatment offers any substantial benefit to the student. What is obvious is that the two subjects do interact, and interact substantially, often in a surprising fashion. These points of tangency present an instructor the opportunity to pose (and answer) natural and important questions on basic material by applying real analysis to complex function theory, and vice versa. This article is devoted to several such applications. My own experience in teaching suggests that the subject matter discussed below is particularly well-suited for presentation in a year-long first graduate course in complex analysis. While most of this material is (perhaps by definition) well known to the experts, it is not, unfortunately, a part of the common culture of professional mathematicians. In fact, several of the examples arose in response to questions from friends and colleagues. The mathematics involved is too pretty to be the private preserve of specialists.
