wjsn dreams come true album download WJSN – “Dreams Come True” WJSN (AKA Cosmic Girls) are a great smorgasbord of pop–disco, orchestral, bubblegum, futurism–all wrapped into compact, complex three and a half minute songs of perfection. I have been a fan of almost every single one of their releases and have finally gotten up the courage to post a review for by far the most archetypically pop group I’ve ever invested time in. The track, called “Dreams Come True,” is driving, achingly sweet, and cosmic-esque, combining what I’m thinking is a heavily distorted synth-guitar (giving the track an arena-rock flavor à la Japanese style), spacey piano, constantly evolving beat structure, and crystal-clear vocal lines. It’s so steadfastly pop but also incredibly smart and I find it takes multiple listens to truly pick apart all the pieces. The best part of “Dreams Come True” is the songwriting. It flows expertly and never becomes monotonous, breaking the stereotypical pop structure not only in terms of how it evolves but also how it builds momentum. The intro is full force, setting the stage by including nearly every instrumental you’ll be hearing in the next few minutes, before swiftly dropping off into a soft, string-led first verse, presented more like a bass groove than anything truly melodic. From there, we swell into the pre-chorus–but this isn’t just any pre-chorus, oh no. This is a three-part soundscape evolution, full of tonal and instrumental change ups–part schoolgirl J-Pop, part classical progression–that leads us smoothly into the unexpectedly punchy and hypnotically stacked vocals of the chorus–a repetitious “trust in me.” The bridge too is unexpected in the best way. Composed of two extended parts that build backwards, it begins powerfully before mellowing into one of the softer sections of the track, creating a great contrast for the drama of the last refrain. All in all, “Dreams Come True” takes all the pop song tropes we know and love, uses them with the help of a hodgepodge of instrumentals–so obnoxious and confident it actually works–and then messes around with mainstream song structure. What we’re left with is sort of a gritty bubblegum pop epic that exceeds expectations and surprises at every turn.
