Elszalasztott Lehetőségek. VII. Kelemen Pápa És II. Lajos Országainak Belpolitikája (1523–1526) KÖZLEMÉNYEK Elszalasztott lehetőségek. VII. Kelemen pápa és II. Lajos országainak belpolitikája (1523–1526) Nemes Gábor A Szentszék az egyik elsődleges külpolitikai célját, a törökök európai ter- jeszkedésének megakadályozását és az eretnek mozgalmak felszámolását hazánkban a belpolitikai erőviszonyok átalakításával próbálta meg elérni: azaz az ország stabilitását és ütőképességét segítő és a Szentszékhez mesz- szemenően lojális szereplőket igyekeztek pozícióba juttatni az úgynevezett „kártékony” elemek háttérbe szorításával. A szentszéki diplomácia ilyen irányú tevékenysége számára az első iga- zán kedvező fordulatot Verbőci István nádori kinevezése jelentette. A kivá- ló jogtudóst – akit VII. Lajos nagybátyjának, I. Zsigmond lengyel királynak és nagy tekintélyű kancellárjának, Krzysztof Szydłowieckinek is írt. 7 A VII. Kelemen levelei azonban hatástalanok ma- radtak, hiszen Verbőcit a régi nádor, Bátori István 1526. április végén meg- buktatta. 8 Bár Verbőci a pápa személyes támogatását élvezte, megválasztásában a Szentszék aktívan nem vett részt. Erre leginkább Burgio 1525. július 11-i jelentése a bizonyíték, aki szerint Verbőci Szapolyai vajda embere. VII. Kelemen pápa és II. Lajos … 5 vállalt az egyes felek közötti közvetítésben. 11 1433. november 30-án a cseh országgyűlésen a kelyhesek és a zsinat között egyezség született: a „compactata Pragensia”, amelyben a zsinat feltételesen elfogadta az ún. „négy prágai cikkelyt”. 12 Ezt még további elhúzódó tárgyalások követték, a mindkét fél számára elfogadható egyezmény szövegét végül 1436. július 5- én a jihlavai országgyűlésen hirdették ki, ezt IV. Jenő pápa két ízben is jóváhagyta. A compactatát – melyet 1462-ben II. Pius pápa érvénytelennek nyilvánított – György király halála után, Jagelló Ulászló megválasztásakor is szem előtt tartották. A Mátyás ellenében megválasztott Ulászló Kutná Hora-ban (Kuttenbergben) vállalta, hogy az érvénytelenített egyezményt újra elismerteti a Szentszékkel a kato- likus és utraquista párt közötti harc békés lezárása érdekében. 15 1485-ben a Kutná Hora-i béke – amelyben Mátyás és Ulászló kölcsönösen elismerték egymást – a két felekezet békés egymás mellett élését kisebb-nagyobb za- vargásokat leszámítva megoldotta, de a vallási kérdésekben meglévő né- zetkülönbségek megmaradtak. Miután Ulászló 1491-ben magyar király is lett, az ügy a Jagelló-ház belső ügyévé vált. Ugyanakkor a békének 1512- ben örök időkre történő meghosszabbítása is arról árulkodott, hogy Ulászló a kelyhesek uniójával nem kívánt érdemben foglalkozni. 16 11 FRAKNÓI , 1902. 23–24. p. 12 TÓTH SZABÓ PÁL : A cseh-huszita mozgalmak és uralom története Magyarországon. • Abuses Under Indictment at the Diet of Augsburg 1530 Jared Wicks, S.J
ABUSES UNDER INDICTMENT AT THE DIET OF AUGSBURG 1530 JARED WICKS, S.J. Gregorian University, Rome HE MOST recent historical scholarship on the religious dimensions of Tthe Diet of Augsburg in 1530 has heightened our awareness and understanding of the momentous negotiations toward unity conducted at the Diet.1 Beginning August 16, 1530, Lutheran and Catholic represent atives worked energetically, and with some substantial successes, to overcome the divergence between the Augsburg Confession, which had been presented on June 25, and the Confutation which was read on behalf of Emperor Charles V on August 3. Negotiations on doctrine, especially on August 16-17, narrowed the differences on sin, justification, good works, and repentance, but from this point on the discussions became more difficult and an impasse was reached by August 21 which further exchanges only confirmed. The Emperor's draft recess of September 22 declared that the Lutheran confession had been refuted and that its signers had six months to consider acceptance of the articles proposed to them at the point of impasse in late August. Also, no further doctrinal innovations nor any more changes in religious practice were to be intro duced in their domains.2 When the adherents of the Reformation dis sented from this recess, it became unmistakably clear that the religious unity of the German Empire and of Western Christendom was on the way to dissolution. But why did it come to this? Why was Charles V so severely frustrated in realizing the aims set for the Diet in his conciliatory summons of January 21, 1530? The Diet was to be a forum for a respectful hearing of the views and positions of the estates and for considerations on those steps that would lead to agreement and unity in one church under Christ.3 1 The most recent stage of research began with Gerhard Müller, "Johann Eck und die Confessio Augustana/' Quellen und Forschungen aus italienischen Archiven und Biblio theken 38 (1958) 205-42, and continued in works by Eugène Honèe and Vinzenz Pfhür, with further contributions of G.

  • Cardinal Pietro Isvalies, the Bishop of Veszprém
Cardinal Pietro Isvalies, the Bishop of Veszprém Gábor Nemes It was rare that a foreigner, let alone a foreign cardinal, was appointed to a Hungarian diocese1. In the history of Hungary, there were only two such cardinals who became bishops while being legates: Branda da Castiglione and Pietro Isvalies, both of whom obtained the episco- pal see of Veszprém2. Below, the career of the latter is outlined from a Hungarian researcher’s point of view by detailing his office as a legate and his retinue. The Beginning of a Career: From Canon to Obtaining the Red Galero Pietro Isvalies was born in Messina, Sicily in the middle of the fifteenth century to a poor family of Spanish origin3. His outstanding career started in his birthplace: at first he was a precentor of Messina, and then he became the vicar general of Archbishop Pietro de Luna4. Here he received his first benefices from Archbishop Luna, who appointed him as the provost of the Priory of Santa Croce of Messina and the com- 1 This article has been prepared in the MTA-PPKE Vilmos Fraknói Vatican Histor- ical Research Group. • Universalist Aspirations of the Utraquist Church
194 Zdeněk V. David Universalist Aspirations of the Utraquist Church Zdeněk V. David (Washington, D.C.) An important legacy of Utraquism to the subsequent Czech political culture was its universalist outlook. This conclusion may appear paradoxical consider - ing that the national accent seemed so strong in the Bohemian Reformation and especially during the Bohemian religious wars. Such an assumption of national exclusivity led to the mistaken view that the Bohemians might be sat - isfied with an exceptional ecclesiastical status, as Rome saw it at the Council of Basel in 1434-1436 and in the issuance of a special privilege of the lay chalice for the Bohemians by Pope Pius IV in 1564. These tactics of appeasement, however, failed. They ignored the basic fact that the Bohemians’ goal was to reform the (Western) Church as a whole. In the eyes of the Utraquists, the purpose of the Czech nation was not to assert a peculiar set of ethnically grounded beliefs, but to serve as a vehicle for the realisation of a universal purpose. Subsequently, this outlook harmonised with the cosmopolitan character of the Enlighten - ment and eventually with that of political liberalism. In an earlier article, I discussed the Utraquist legacy of liberal ecclesiology. 1 In this paper the Utraquists’ universalism is treated in terms of their contin - ued, albeit qualified, attachment to the Roman Church, as well as their rela - tionship to other groups that sought to reform the entire scope of Western Christendom along the lines of liberal Catholicism. 2 This essay also seeks to answer the charges that the Utraquists’ ambition to reform the Church of Rome revealed signs of sycophancy, quixotic idiosyncrasy, and megalomania in their actions.

This paper considers the conventions, both written and unwritten, that governed such activities in Renaissance Rome, setting them in the context of the extensive literature on gift-giving. While official, ceremonial gifts were often recorded in writing, the less licit payments with which this article is concerned were often not. However, there is enough of a paper trail to reconstruct at least some of the gift-giving practices at the papal court, and the essay considers diplomatic letters, trial records and prescriptive treatises in order to do so.

Styled as the ‘transcription’ of unpublished manuscripts by Tasso and Biron on the French unrest from Calvin to Nantes, this publication was in fact intended to support the reaction of European aristocracy against the outcome and repercussions of the French Revolution. Hume’s and Rousseau’s visions of popular fury depict the violence of the French ‘populace’. Throughout history, Agrati argues, the French have fomented factions, incited rebellion and regularly spoiled the constructive efforts of well-meaning monarchs. In line with the spirit that had just animated the Congress of Vienna, Agrati maintains that only a ‘firm and absolute’ (p. 153) ruler can avert the lethal threat of anarchy. • Renaissance Diplomacy in Practice: the Case of Gregorio Casali, England’S Ambassador to the Papal Court, 1525-33
Renaissance diplomacy in practice: the case of Gregorio Casali, England’s ambassador to the papal court, 1525-33 Catherine Lucy Fletcher Royal Holloway, University of London Thesis presented for the award of PhD 1 I confirm that the work contained in this thesis is entirely my own. Catherine Fletcher 23 April 2008 2 Abstract THIS thesis investigates the day-to-day practice of Renaissance diplomacy through a case-study of Gregorio Casali, one of a number of Italians in the Roman diplomatic corps who served foreign princes, in Casali’s case King Henry VIII of England. It outlines and analyses the key elements of the resident ambassador’s role, shifting the focus of study from the traditional emphasis on official negotiations and such formal sites for the exercise of power to consider too informal relationships and arenas for diplomacy. Chapters consider the diplomat’s role in Rome (the most developed diplomatic centre of its day); the relevance of family and friendship networks in Casali’s career; the importance of hospitality and liberality in diplomatic life; gift- giving and ‘bribery’. Drawing on recent scholarship relating to such issues as the house, household and gift-giving, the thesis situates Renaissance diplomacy in its broader social context. It thus contributes to the new trend among historians of diplomacy to adopt methods from social and cultural history, but, in applying the methodology of microhistory, takes this to a new level. As well as raising new questions about the role of the resident ambassador and his interaction with other diplomatic and political actors, the case of Casali and his family draws attention to the important issue of the employment of foreigners in diplomatic service during this period, allowing a consideration of how loyalty was understood and allegiances were managed.

  • André De Resende and the 11,000 Holy Virgins
ANDRÉ DE RESENDE AND THE 11,000 HOLY VIRGINS Portugal's most talented Latin poet and Classical scholar, and the Peninsula's first real archaeologist, André de Resende (1), was also a Dominican priest, and an authority on religious matters, and for two years or so he was professor of Sacred Theology at the Uni versity of Coimbra (2). In this article, 1 shall present one of his reli gious compositions, his account of the discovery and transfer of two holy skulls from a Carmelite monastery in Cologne to a new shrine in southern Portugal. My English translation is the first ever; the Latin was originally published in Venice, when Resende was in northern Italy late in 1532. As his account reveals, Resende played an important part himself in authenticating the remains of the two virgins, while (1) Lúcio André de Resende, Portugal's leading Latin poet. Classical scholar and archaclogist of the 16th Century, was born in Évora probably on Dec. 13, 1498, and died there on Dec. 9, 1573. As late as Spring 1573 he was still working on his definitive study of Iberian archaeology (De Antiauitatibiis Lusitanien'), while having his less official Latin poems copied down (over 5000 vv., discovered by me in 2 Por tuguese miscellanies). There is no modern biography of this important humanist, well known in Northern Europe and Italy, that takes into account the biographical evidence recently discovered. The best, now X0 yrs old, is by Francisco Leitão Ferreira (tl735), 'Vida de André de Resende", with notes by A. Braamcamp Freire (who edited a hard-to-find Separata), in Archiva Hist.

But fewer people are aware that some eleven years earher Campeggio performed another legatine commission in this country, a visit which, although fruitless in its immediate objects, had nevertheless an incidental result of the most important character. The foUowing pages give the reader a graphic account of Campeggio's landing in England on the former occasion, and of his stately progress through Kent to London. The original is to be found among the Harleian MSS. in the British Museum, and is written in an early sixteenth century hand, which makes it probable that the proceedings were recorded shortly after their occurrence. I am not aware that this MS. has been previously printed. Many readers wiU probably be reminded of the accounts of Wolsey's own progresses, as given by his biographers, Cavendish and Fiddes. A few words upon the career of Campeggio may not be out of place in this introduction. Lorenzo Campeggio was born in 1472, of a noble family settled in Bologna, at which university, and at Pavia, we find him studying Imperial law some twenty years later. EventuaUy he married and had a son who, foUowing his father, attained the cardinalate at the creation of Pope Juhus HI in 1551.
