Clockwise from top left: To replace the current en- trance to Tech Rec, the new entrance will contain a more open view of the interior of the facility from the outside as well as lounge seating and decorative walls, intended to catch the eye of passers-by in the Student Center and make them aware of the facility’s presence.

The new multipurpose room, located in the front where bil- liards tables currently stand, is projected to be a highly flexible space used for a range of activi- ties from dance and martial arts classes to parties, meetings and luncheons. The room will have a moveable glass wall and will hold between 60-70 people.

For the gaming lounge, the current plan and sketches show five gaming stations with a flat panel display and a double sided sofa lounge at each gaming sta- tion.

The biggest change to the bowling lanes will be the addition of bleacher-style seating in the area, as well as large projection screens above each lane.

OUR VIEWS CONSENSUS OPINION Input needed The Student Center, which this summer made plans to reno- vate and dramatically alter Tech Rec, received an architect’s proposal for a new design for the facility this week. The new design has been in the works for several months, but Student Center management is only now beginning to solicit student feedback on the changes. Prior to this week, only a few students were aware of the planning process, and due to the timeline of the architect’s work effort students now have only one week to make suggestions about the proposal. This is clearly an inad- equate amount of time for any meaningful input. Unfortunately, this failure to solicit student feedback on major decisions seems to be endemic to the administration of late. When administrators began investigating changes to the undergraduate curriculum, a process that will affect more than 12,000 students, only a few students were invited to participate in the initial conversation. Ray Vito, the new vice provost of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies, said more student feed- back would be solicited as the process “wound down.” These two examples point to a pattern that is troubling: the By Abhishek Jain / STUDENT PUBLICATIONS administration is only paying lipservice to the idea of student feedback rather than seriously seeking it. Anindo Chatterjee is a world-famous tabla instrumentalist from Calcutta, India. On Saturday, Nov. 3, Chatterjee came to Tech to perform his well-known classical Indian tabla solo with sarangi accompaniment from fellow musician Ramesh Mishra. Th e tabla is a percussive instrument native to South Asia. Th e word tabla actually stems from the Arabic word for drum, “tabl.” Th e tabla is essentially two drums, usually of distinctly diff erent sizes. Th e disparity in timbres leads to various tones, something most people disregard in percussion. With tablas, these diff erences are essential since there are only two drums. Unlike Western drum sets, these tones aff ect the actual technique in the performance. Tablas are handmade of leather, rope and wood and are tuned by the rope with the use of dowels and a hammer. Played primarily in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the tabla has played a part in the resurgence of classical Indian music in places far west of its land of origin, particularly in areas with high concentrations of South Asians like England, New York and Chicago. Indian music has gained popularity thanks
