ROMANTIC PLACES TO WALK

2014 The most inspiring views of Paris

The best viewpoints are for sharing ... together. The most famous is the view from the square in front of the Sacré-Coeur basilica, at the top of Hill. In the east of Paris, the hill at Belleville also offers a wonderful panoramic view. Overlooking the park, the terrace of the restaurant Ô Paris is a great place to sit and gaze on the city lights in the evening. From the 56th floor of the Tour , the Ciel de Paris restaurant dominates the capital offering amazing moments. Only the outstrips it, to such an extent that it sometimes has its head in the clouds … Great views are also guaranteed as you travel up the glass-walled escalators at the Pompidou Centre. At the top, you can carry on enjoying the view over a drink at Chez Georges, the restaurant on the top floor of the modern art museum. For those with a sense of daring, the tethered hot air balloon at the Parc André Citroën is an exciting experience, taking you up into the sky to hover over the park.

Mythical places to kiss The snapshot immortalized by Robert Doisneau in 1950 has become legendary: reproduced as a postcard and a poster by the hundreds of thousands, the ‘Baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville’ is one of the most famous in the world! To re-enact the scene, you should pose with your sweetheart against the railings of the entrance to the metro. Other classic spots for a photo: the Trocadéro esplanade with the Eiffel Tower in the background, the Montmartre hillside steps, below the Sacré-Coeur, the steps of the Opera House, the square in front of Notre-Dame, the bridges that span the Saint-Martin Canal... Not forgetting, the tremendous view up the Champs- Elysées from Place de la .

In love on the riverbanks

The Seine riverbanks have been popular with loving couples for centuries. The quaysides around the two islands of Ile Saint Louis and Ile de la Cité that form the very ‘heart’ of Paris are ideal places to stroll together, the most romantic spot being the charming little public garden the Square du Vert-Galant, at the tip of the Île de la Cité. Most of the section of the left bank of the Seine has also been given over to pedestrians since the summer of 2013. Remember the legendary screen stars Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant in the romantic comedy and thriller Charade. And do admire the sun setting on the water from the steps in front of the Musée d’Orsay. The bridges also appeal to couples. Could it be because their arches symbolize an alliance? Or because the water flowing under them carries with it the wildest of promises? According to tradition, lovebirds should kiss and make a wish under the Pont Marie, nicknamed ‘lovers’ bridge’.

On the trail of lovers at Montmartre Associated with the Paris of shady and promiscuous behaviour, the Pigalle and Butte Montmartre neighbourhoods perpetuate the tradition of famous cabarets and romantic places. Pigalle is a mythical district synonymous with revues at the and lively bars and sex shops. Further on up, lovebirds saunter down little bohemian streets leading to the flights of steps on Montmartre hillside and can have a fun ride on the merry-go-round on the quaint Place des Abbesses. In the neighbouring little public garden, the ‘I love you’ wall is inscribed with some one thousand declarations of love in more than 300 languages! In the daytime, couples can have their portrait painted by the artists in .

Embracing on a public bench

Park benches in public parks and gardens in Paris are ideal for whispering sweet nothings. Some of those in the Gardens are next to the sensual statues by Maillol … Historically, this garden has always been a prime location for libertine behaviour. The wide alleys were once the theatre of love and games of chance. These days you’re more likely to see couples stroking Maillol’s sensual marble sculptures, or crunching toffee apples at the funfair in the gardens in summer. Exchange kisses at a vertiginous height in the Temple of Sibyl, perched on a rocky summit in the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, or in the dark in the cave below with its stalagmites. Embrace sedately near the Fontaine Médias in the , kiss like the ancient Romans in the Arènes de Lutèce and canoodle above street level in the gardens of the Coulée Verte. In cold weather, the tropical environment of the Serres d’Auteuil is a good place to be, as are the hothouses in the Jardin des Plantes. And for the ‘secret’ atmosphere of a romantic 19th century garden, there are the gardens of Rohan and Fontenay at the National Archives with umbrella pine trees, gloriettes and topiary.

Put together a funny lovey-dovey itinerary For an offbeat and romantic itinerary, pick up a map of the city and follow ‘inspiring’ street names. You could start out at Passage du Désir, in the 10th arrondissement, and

2

then on to rue de la Fidélité, only a short distance away, leading to ... rue de Paradis! Or you could walk down rue de la Gaieté (14th) and rue de la Félicité (17th). Newlyweds could explore rue Monsieur (7th), and go on to rue Mademoiselle (15th) before joining rue Madame (6th), and perhaps continue on to the nearby rue Princesse. To put an end to a lovers quarrel, nothing could be better than rue de la Paix! In love, the language of flowers is particularly rich. To discover the secret corners of Paris, take a walk along the quai aux Fleurs (4th), (4th) then rue des Camélias (14th) before losing yourself in the utterly charming Cité des Fleurs (17th). Optional streets: rue des Glycines, rue des Iris and rue des Orchidées (13th), rue des Primevères (11th) boulevard des Capucines (9th).

Exploring the covered shopping arcades Symbolic of old Paris, the covered arcades are highly prized by Parisians. With their high glass roofs, eclectic boutiques and old-fashioned charm, they are full of timeless charm that is conducive to a romantic stroll, away from the noise of the city. The most refined are the Galeries Vivienne and Colbert, with their neo-classical decor. The Passages Jouffroy and Verdeau will delight those who like collector’s items, while the Passage du Grand Cerf andthe Galerie Vero Dodat are magnets for design fans. The is another popular spot to linger, and the with its numerous Indian restaurants transports you to the subcontinent.

Romantic visits, with or without a guide

Paris is an ideal place for gazing at fabulous sights together. An outing can be artistic with Paris as you like it, which explores the theme of romanticism through famous writers and works of art. Delpine Lanvin offers walks in the footsteps of famous Parisian couples whilst Paristartour traces the lives of Piaf, Callas, and Brigitte Bardot. As for 1 day in Paris, it reveals hidden and little-known public parks and gardens, breathtaking views and romantic cafes. Suggestive paintings, sensual sculptures, cheeky bronze statues ... Museums hide many a work of art to make visitors blush. Bruno de Baeque’s guided tours invite spectators to admire ‘the loveliest bottoms’ on show at the and Orsay. At Pigalle, the Musée de l’Erotisme presents an artistic and historic approach to eroticism. In the New Athens district, the Musée de la Vie Romantique houses a collection of souvenirs and objects relating to the writer George Sand and the painter Ary Scheffer. At the Musée Rodin, enamoured couples can perform their version of Rodin’s The Kiss, and be moved by the works of Rodin’s lover Camille Claudel and her tragic destiny. Other romantic icons: the Lady and the Unicorn tapestry at the Musée de Cluny and the painting of Romeo and Juliet at the little Musée Delacroix. Finally, there are Thierry Le Roi’s remarkable ‘funerary-romantic’ tours of the Père Lachaise cemetery; tombs to discover include that of Héloïse and Abelard.

Cruising on the Seine

There’s nothing quite as romantic as inviting your beloved for a dinner cruise or sightseeing cruise along the Seine to admire the most beautiful monuments in Paris. The restaurant boats of La Marina de Paris serve refined cuisine made from fresh market produce; the Bateaux Parisiens offer outstanding views from their all-glass dining room, not forgetting the famous Bateaux-Mouches. For that special occasion, there is River Limousine or Seine Avenue which offer private cruises aboard luxurious craft, designed similarly to the wooden vessels on the canals of Venice. Green River offers original little pontoon boats that can also be privately hired for a romantic getaway. Since last summer, Batostar has been offering trips around the two islands Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis aboard the capital’s first 100% electric-powered boat. It now runs between Notre-Dame and the Eiffel Tower. The guinguette spirit has reached the Seine with the Belle Vallée, a paddle-boat with an accordionist on board every Thursday for a lively musical boat trip. Finally, cruises along the Saint-Martin Canal, passing through locks and swing bridges, will appeal to visitors eager to spot reminders of bygone popular and bohemian Paris. For a unique experience, the VIP Paris Yacht Hotel offers overnight accommodation in one of its cabins after a dinner cruise on the Seine.

Tea rooms and snacks in hotels On a cold winter’s day, it is nice to enjoy a drink and a delicious cake or pastry in one of the capital’s many tea rooms. Belle époque decor and a hot chocolate at Angelina, mint tea and oriental delights in the exotic setting of the Grande Mosquée de Paris, or macaroons at the atypical and magically chic Ladurée, on the Champs-Elysées. At the Pâtisserie des Rêves, you can enjoy updated classics by maestro Philippe Conticini. At Rose Bakery 2, organic teas and smoothies team up well with the scones, carrot cake or lemon polenta cake. And for a traditional tea ceremony, go to Jugetsudo, at Saint- Germain-des-Prés, a Japanese tea house reputed for the excellent quality of its green

tea. Housed in a former art deco swimming pool, Le Plongeoir at Hermès boutique is a prominent address. Many starred restaurants and upscale hotels also offer gourmet mid- afternoon tea. Notable addresses include the tea room of Hélène Darroze, at the Dali at the Hôtel Meurice, at the Long Bar at the Royal Monceau and at La Bauhinia at the Shangri-La Hotel. The delightful L’Auberge Flora now also serves sweet snacks during the afternoons.

EVENING OUT JUST FOR THE TWO OF US

Paris fizzes: champagne! George Sand wrote that champagne is a great help. To seal your love for one another or just to be romantic, nothing can replace the magic of champagne. The oldest bar in Paris devoted to this festive drink is Le Dokhan’s, at the Radisson Blu hotel, near to Trocadéro. Wood-panelling, mirrors and candles make this a classy place. At the Hôtel de Sezz, near to Passy, La Grande Dame is devoted to Veuve Clicquot champagne. And, the famous Flûte Bar from New York has a cosy intimate address in Paris, near to Place de l’Etoile. The champagne bar on the third floor of the Eiffel Tower is an ideal place for a ‘heady’ toast to happiness. At Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the champagne cellar Dilettantes has 130 different champagnes and has a bar and a cellar for tastings. Finally, miniscule and cosy, Call Me Bubbles, in a little street in a working class area of Paris, offers grands crus champagnes at affordable prices. Restaurants with a view...

In Paris, there is no shortage of up in the air restaurants! The Eiffel Tower is obviously one of the top ones. At 125 m, the refined menu at the Jules Verne is signed , whose group also oversees those at the Lounge Eiffel and the 58 Eiffel (the restaurants situated on the 1st floor). The Tour d’Argent, overlooking the Seine and Notre-Dame, needs no introduction. Devised by Philippe Starck, the Terrasse Gallery at

Wonderful views of Paris can also be had from the terrace of the Maison Blanche, the roof of the Raphaël hotel, the rooftop restaurant Les Ombres at the Musée du Quai- Branly, the Georges at the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Zyriad by Noura at the Institut du Monde arabe, the 39 V in the heart of the golden fashion triangle, and the Benkay, a gem of Japanese cooking, on the 4th floor of the Hôtel Novotel Paris Tour Eiffel. Great restaurants for great occasions For a very special occasion, a renowned restaurant is a must. Paris has some 80 restaurants with stars awarded by the famous Michelin Guide, with no less than nine restaurants bearing 3 stars. Amongst these, L’Ambroisie, housed in a former private mansion house in the Place des Voges: in addition to the excellent cuisine by Barnard Pacaud, there is also the romantic decor. In the , the Pré Catelan is a wonderful place where one dines in a magnificent belle époque style room. And the restaurant Epicure at Le Bristol also opens out onto a lovely French-style garden. The historic setting of the Pavillon Ledoyen, in the gardens of the Champs Elysées, is also a particularly verdant spot, whilst the interiors of the restaurant at Le Meurice, updated by Philippe Stark, were inspired by the royal apartments at the .

The charm of a Guinguette atmosphere In the heart of the Buttes Chaumont park, the guinguette-style cafe Rosa Bonheur, housed in a listed building, is a popular spot for dancing on fine summer evenings along with people from the local area. Even more unusual, the Chalet des Iles, on the banks of a lake in the Bois de Boulogne, offers a bucolic setting in summer and a cosy setting in winter with its lovely fireplace. There is also the additional charm of having to get to this secret haven by boat. In Montmartre, La Bonne Franquette takes you back to the time of Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec, with its pretty terrace and garden. Known for a long time as the Guinguette Pirate, the Dame de Canton is a Chinese junk moored opposite the Bibliothèque nationale, in the 13th arrondissement. Its floating terrace on the Seine hosts numerous evening parties under the strings of lights. A few stops from the Pont Alexandre III, the refreshment kiosk ‘En attendant Rosa’ has been enlivening the Port des Invalides since last summer: it will be replaced by a fixed barge named … Rosa Bonheur sur Seine.

Originality on the menu

To spice up a romantic meal for two, some places combine delightful food with an out-of-the-ordinary setting. At Le Bel Canto, all the waiters and waitresses are opera singers who sing as they serve your meal. Dans le noir is a restaurant where all the guests discover new flavours without being able to see what they are eating, helped by blind guides. At Le Vieux Belleville, there is a nightly performance from the traditional post-war repertory. At Le Monteverdi, every evening, guests enjoy Italian cooking whilst listening to piano music. The , in Montmartre, is a former windmill that became the haunt of the Impressionists, then a music hall and then a renowned restaurant. At Sur un Arbre Perché, you can dine on a swing and at La Fourmi Ailée, in a former library. Founded in 1766, the restaurant Lapérouse has small alcove rooms; a charming touch is that guests ring a bell to be served so that their privacy is assured. Behind the Bastille, Le China recreates the decor of 1930s Shanghai; Le Vraymonde, the restaurant at the hotel Bouddha Bar has a succession of Chinese style lounges with a modern twist. At 68 Champs Elysées, the historic shop, fully renovated by Guerlain, now houses a restaurant on the lower ground floor. At the helm, Guy Martin, the starred chef of the Grand Véfour, who has devised a menu inspired by perfume with the ‘nose’ of

A last tango in Paris

What could be more romantic than ballroom dancing? There are several places in Paris you can go to tango, salsa, waltz, etc. At La Bellevilloise, you can have lessons to learn the tango, the swing or even the lindy hop, from the 1920s. At La Casa del Tango, people dance as they did in the most romantic times of the past and in a very Parisian spirit. And for beginners, some places like the Théâtre de Verre offer classes a few hours before the dances organized at weekends.

LOVING NIGHTS

Love hotels

The aptly named Hôtel Amour, in the South Pigalle district, has 20 guest rooms decorated on the theme of love by 20 of the owners’ friends, including artist Sophie Calle, as well as a pretty leafy terrace. Montmartre Mon amour is a 4-star hotel devoted to famous couples like Edith Piaf and Marcel Cerdan or Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud. The hotel Les Plumes has named some of its guest rooms Paul and Arthur; other famous 19th-century lovers alluded to include George (Sand) and Alfred (de Musset), Juliette (Récamier) and Victor Hugo … At Jules & Jim, named after Truffaut’s film, the guest rooms overlook Parisian rooftops or paved courtyards and have an arty atmosphere with huge portrait photos. The irreverent Cristal Champs- Élysées offers bedrooms and suites in vivid colours, with incongruous curves and atypical materials. In one of these, a cheeky two-way mirror shows the bathroom. At the hotel Sezz, with its designer interiors, a discrete draw is in fact a ‘sexy mini bar’. The hotel Vice Versa by designer Chantal Thomass also plays on sensuality on the theme of the seven deadly sins! Finally, for 1,000 days only (until 18 November 2016), the Kiss Room by Franco-Hungarian artist Mathias Kiss is situated in and consists of an ephemeral bedroom decorated with a thousand mirrors …

Palatial in style

Reserved for the greatest occasions, palaces incarnate the essence of luxury. Some are legendary, like Le Meurice, the Ritz (closed for renovation) or the Four Seasons George V. Others offer more contemporary decor like the Royal Monceau Raffles, recently given a makeover by Philippe Stark, or the Mandarin Oriental. The opening of the first French address by the Peninsula group, with the former hotel Majestic is tipped to be the event of summer 2014.

Hôtels particuliers

Paris’s hôtels particuliers (former private mansion houses) are veritable little palaces set in magnificent gardens, and contribute to the city’s unique charm. Although some of them have been turned into museums, like the Hôtel Salé, which houses the Musée Picasso, others have been transformed into luxury Hotels. In the 16th arrondissement, the Hôtel Saint-James offers 48 chic guest rooms and suites with the atmosphere of a private family residence. On Chaillot hill, the Asian luxury hotel brand Shangri-La is housed in the Palais d’Iéna, the former residence of Prince Roland Bonaparte. Its guest rooms offer wonderful views of the Eiffel Tower. A stone’s throw from the Champs Elysées, the Hôtel Marignan boasts a superb art deco facade and minimalist designer interiors. More confidential, the Hôtel Particulier a large Directoire-style mansion on the heights of Montmartre has five suites, a large garden and a cocktail bar titled the Très Particulier.

Extraordinary bed & breakfast accommodation

More personalized than most hotel rooms in the same price category, some B&Bs are absolute gems. Meeting the French has made a highly selective list of the capital’s finest ones: with patio, Gothic turret, on a barge, etc. Alcôves & Agapes specializes in rooms of character and charm, all situated in exceptional places (Haussmann apartment, artist’s studio, loft, house with garden, etc). Bed & Break France also has some wonderful accommodation. Paris-Oasis is a delightful guest house on the slopes of Montmartre, with five apartments, a covered swimming pool and a terrace. On a zanier note, Chez Bertrand offers fun and colourful accommodation in the saint-Ouen flea market neighbourhood. And for a night right in the heart of the Marais, Bonne Nuit Paris offers several guest rooms, some with exposed beams. A typical Parisian neighbourhood experience.

Indulge your sweet tooth

Confectionery, a symbol of temptation and pure delight, is an ideal gift for Valentine’s Day. Sweets and chocolates for everyone to share. But not just any kind! Those from A la Mère de Famille have been popular since 1761. Sweets from Fouquet’s are a favourite with children and adults. Maiffret is renowned for its chocolates and fruit jellies. Macaroons are still all the trend, and Pierre Hermé’s have some truly surprising flavours (jasmine, foie gras, white truffle, etc.). Also to try, the amazing macaroon chocolates: real chocolates with a macaroon centre. The Belgian chocolatier Pierre Marcolini presents timeless collections and ephemeral creations of biscuits, pralines, truffles, palet biscuits and other delicious things in his two Parisian shops. The concept store Un dimanche à Paris, devoted to chocolate, has a shop, restaurant, and tea room, and gives cooking lessons.

Chic underwear

Underwear is an essential part of seduction and the arousal of desire. Restraint and classicism are the leitmotifs at Érès; lace is the focus at La Perla, and frills at Fifi Chachnill. The innovative and trendy collections at Princesse Tam-Tam are a reference in terms of lingerie. Aubade lingerie, famous for the lessons it gives on advertising hoardings, changes with the seasons. The boudoir-style Chantal Thomass shop pays tribute to self-assured women, and silk hosiery specialist Chez Cervin, which previously only sold to private customers, is a firm favourite with dancers at the Crazy Horse cabaret.

DECLARATIONS WITH A DIFFERENCE

Proposing in Paris

Valentine’s Day is the opportunity to tell/or remind your beloved how much you adore them. It may even be the ideal time to make a marriage proposal. So, do it in style. Specialist agencies have imagined the most incredible scenarios: a shower of roses, projection of a declaration of love at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, on the wings of a plane or an advertising van; delivery of a love letter by a dove or a statue from the

14

Musée Grévin ... All that remains is to say ‘yes’. Even if you are already married, it is wonderful to renew your vows in the world’s most romantic city! For an original declaration, the vintage decor of the Bus Bleu, a delightful Renault bus dating back to 1958, is a great option. And most unusual, the revamped maritime containers Zzz installed on the Berges de Seine may be booked for an hour and a half and are sure to surprise!

The non-marriage proposal

To be different from the rest, wait until september to declare your love in an amusing way. In a tribute to the famous song by George Brassens (La non-demande en mariage), sweethearts can express their love in front of the mayor and in public during the non- marriage proposal ceremony, which takes place every year during the grape harvest at Montmartre: ‘I have the honour of not asking you to marry me’.
