Tomorrow’s Geometry Joseph Malkevitch YORKCOLLEGE (CUNY) Introduction In A Century of Mathematics in America (Part II), Robert Osserman contributed an article entitled “The Geometry Renaissance in America: 1938-1988.” The renaissance in geometry that he recounts has not been restricted only to America and did not end in 1988. Nor, as Osserman notes in a “postscript” to the article, has this renaissance been confined only to the area of differential geometry, which is what his article deals with. There are many reasons for the renaissance in geometry, ranging from new developments in physics and biology, to the development of the digital computer, to the flowering of old and new fields within mathematics that stimulate geometric insights. Yet in terms of the way geometry is represented in the undergraduate curriculum, there has been no renaissance. On the contrary, there has been relatively little changein the nature of the geometric mathematics taught in colleges. This unchanging curriculum for geometry in college has in turn prevented any new geometry or applications stemming from geometry from being presented in high school (or earlier grades). Students planning to become high school or middle-school teachers usually see only that geometry covered in a survey course on Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry. The content of such courses rarely discusses geometry that reaches into the period of which Osserman speaks. However, because of its unique intuitive and quick-starting nature, geometry that has been discovered in the last 30 years can be taught to undergraduates. In light of these contrasting phenomena-explosive growth in geometric met hods and applications of geometry but an unchanging undergraduate geometry curriculum-t he MAA Curriculum Action Project convened an E-mail Focus Group to debate geometry education. -

But at that time Bill Thurston was already starting to greatly influence the study of 2- and 3-manifolds through the introduction of geometry, especially hyperbolic. Four years later in September, 1981, Mike Freedman turned a subject, topological 4-manifolds, in which we expected no progress for years, into a subject in which it seemed we knew everything. A few months later in spring 1982, Simon Donaldson brought gauge theory to 4-manifolds with the first of a remarkable string of theorems showing that smooth 4-manifolds which might not exist or might not be diffeomorphic, in fact, didn’t and weren’t. Exotic R4’s, the strangest of smooth manifolds, followed. And then in late spring 1984, Vaughan Jones brought us the Jones polynomial and later Witten a host of other topological quantum field theories (TQFT’s). Physics has had for at least two decades a remarkable record for guiding mathematicians to remarkable mathematics (Seiberg–Witten gauge theory, new in October, 1994, is the latest example). Lest one think that progress was only made using non-topological techniques, note that Freedman’s work, and other results like knot complements determining knots (Gordon- Luecke) or the Seifert fibered space conjecture (Mess, Scott, Gabai, Casson & Jungreis) were all or mostly classical topology. -

Weak KAM Theory: the connection between Aubry-Mather theory and viscosity solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation Albert Fathi Abstract. The goal of this lecture is to explain to the general mathematical audience the connection that was discovered in the last 20 or so years between the Aubry-Mather theory of Lagrangian systems, due independently to Aubry and Mather in low dimension, and to Mather in higher dimension, and the theory of viscosity solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, due to Crandall and Lions, and more precisely the existence of global viscosity solutions due to Lions, Papanicolaou, and Varhadan. Introduction This lecture is not intended for specialists, but rather for the general mathematical audience. Lagrangian Dynamical Systems have their origin in classical physics, especially in celestial mechanics. The Hamilton-Jacobi method is a way to obtain trajectories of a Lagrangian system through solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. However, solutions of this equa- tion easily develop singularities. Therefore for a long time, only local results were obtained. Since the 1950’s, several major developments both on the dynamical side, and the PDE side have taken place. In the 1980’s, on the dynamical side there was the famous Aubry-Mather theory for twist maps, discovered independently by S. Aubry [2] and J.N. Mather [20], and its generalization to higher dimension by J.N. Mather [21, 22] in the framework of classical Lagrangian systems.
