ANNUAL REPORT 2019 LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Aspen Public Radio listener,

My name is Tammy Terwelp and I’m honored and humbled to be the Executive Director of Aspen Public Radio. I started my tenure at this wonderful organization in January 2019, and over the past year, I’ve had the great fortune of seeing the in all of its glorious seasons, and enjoying the opportunity to spend time cross country skiing, hiking, and participating in historical tours in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Executive Director In short, I am lucky to be a part of this community, thanks to being Tammy Terwelp thanks welcomed so kindly by my neighbors, and I am really excited to live here. our community for Furthermore, I am grateful to help steward the continued growth and their support in 2019. Courtesy Aspen Public success of our public radio station as we quickly approach our fourth Radio decade serving not just Aspen, but also Snowmass Village, Woody Creek, Old Snowmass, Basalt, El Jebel, Missouri Heights, Carbondale, Redstone, Glenwood Springs, New Castle, Silt, Rifle, Gypsum, Eagle, and more.

The mission of Aspen Public Radio is to support, nourish, and enrich our community by providing informative, entertaining, and educational radio and digital programming in a reliable and professional manner. It is truly an honor to serve with this organization, and I am keenly aware that we could not do our important work without our listeners’ input, goodwill, and support.

Aspen Public Radio’s regional coverage aims to connect listeners to our community. From 2018 through 2019, the Aspen Public Radio news team covered a wide range of important and locally relevant stories, including winter sports clinics for disabled veterans; preparations for summer travel on Independence Pass after an historic winter season, the devastating Lake Christine wildfire in Basalt, Colorado; declining elk herds in the region; the record number of skiers involved in avalanches throughout Colorado; coverage of the Aspen Security Forum; Aspen Ideas Festival live broadcasts; and live broadcasts from the Aspen Music Festival and the Wheeler Opera House. Aspen Public Radio hosted a community-style Town Hall event to focus on affordable housing, a timely issue affecting residents valley-wide, as well as interviews with Kirk Siegler on his coverage of the west’s largest wildfires to date, Joshua Johnson and the1A team, and National Geographic photographer Pete McBride in conversation with Colorado River Basin reporter Luke Runyon. We also launched our eNewsletter, The Transmitter, as a weekly digest of important stories for nearly 18,000 listeners.

Additionally, we’ve made crucial upgrades to our broadcasting equipment, including the consolidation of frequencies along the Colorado Highway 82 corridor on 88.9. And, we’ve expanded station programming to include additional airtime for some of public radio’s most popular programs, such as Marketplace, the investigative journalism program, Reveal, Fresh Air, and Weekend Edition. These timely additions represent our commitment to serving as a resource for quality, informative news and programming. You may also be aware that Aspen Public Radio was most recently honored as the winner of multiple Colorado Broadcasters Association (CBA) awards, including: Best News Feature, Best News Coverage of a Single Event, and Best Station-Sponsored Community Event. And I’m happy to share that in 2020, the Aspen Public Radio team will embark upon a new local project, dubbed Rocky Mountain Why?, which serves as a listener-powered journalism platform— bringing you access and insight into our great history, institutions, stories, and local traditions. Plus, we will unveil a three-part podcast series, Gen Z Tea, which shares insight into the lives of the next generation of public radio enthusiasts right here in Colorado. And, we’ll hit the roads, the trails, and the slopes to listen to the news and issues that are most important to you as part of our Tell Me More Tour from Aspen to In 2018, Aspen Public Radio provided critical coverage of the Lake Christine Fire, as well as Gen Z Tea, produced by Glenwood Springs, Rifle to analysis of what we learned about wildfires in Eleanor Bennett. One of the reasons we have the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 proudly hanging in our offices is to remind all of our staff of the reason we are all here:it is the vision of public media to make independent, thoughtful, and local programming and news coverage accessible to all. Your support has undoubtedly helped shape and strengthen this vital public service.

I am grateful that, as a member of this community, you have made a sound investment in Aspen Public Radio. We will, in turn, do the same for our listeners in 2020, and beyond. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Tammy Terwelp Executive Director

To our listeners:

On behalf of the Aspen Public Radio Board of Directors, I’d like to thank our community of listeners, members, volunteers, staff, and supporters, for your longstanding role in making public radio possible. For nearly forty years, Aspen Public Radio has remained committed to enriching our neighbor’s lives with informative and entertaining programming in a reliable and professional manner.

Our station’s principal and most imperative role is to serve as a highly Doug Carlston, Chair of trusted source for news and information, most especially in world filled Aspen Public Radio’s increasingly with untrustworthy and unreliable voices. During this important Board of Directors year of growth for Aspen Public Radio, the Board continued our strategic planning process alongside our capable Executive Director, Tammy Terwelp. I’m also delighted that in 2019, we welcomed Katy Frisch to our Board; she brings a wide breadth of experience and acumen as a business owner, as well as an engaged Aspen community member. And, in 2020, we will welcome Alexis Diaz, a committed volunteer, strategist, and attorney who resides in Snowmass Village.

Our strategic plan aims to deepen and expand our organization’s service to the Roaring Fork Valley, explore new formats, and provide our listeners critical coverage on timely issues, local stories with national impact, and essential news as we approach the 2020 elections.

The station’s award-winning news team also gradually advanced their wide-reaching reputation for excellent reporting, and continues to work in earnest to cultivate news and cultural content that will broaden our appeal to listeners of all ages, from podcasting to traditional broadcasting. Station staff have also worked diligently to consolidate our transmitters to a single frequency from Aspen to Glenwood Springs on 88.9, thereby improving our accessibility from one end of the valley to the other.

We know that what Aspen Public Radio offers to our community is unique. We provide independent, fact-based journalism and cultural programming to a diverse population in a remote, rural—and distinctly cosmopolitan—area. At its very core, Aspen Public Radio is a public service entity. We’re here to provide you with what you need to make informed choices in your life, not to influence you, and we do it all out of a love for our community.

Thank you for being a part of it all.

Sincerely,

Doug Carlston Chair, Aspen Public Radio Board of Directors
