HISTORY Sudbury was founded following the discovery of vast deposits of nickel ore during the time the transcontinental railway was near completion. Soon after, the city became known as a world leader in nickel mining. In fact, mining and related industries dominated its economy for much of the 20th century. Sudbury has gone on to expand from a resource-based economy to emerge as the major retail, economic, health and educational centre for Northeastern Ontario. Greater Sudbury was formed in 2001 when the Regional Municipality of Sudbury and several other townships were merged. SUDBURY EXPLORER’S GUIDE 3 ATTRACTIONS SCIENCE NORTH Located just south of the city’s downtown core on the shores of Ramsey Lake, Science North offers a host of interactive exhibits and shows including an IMAX 3D theatre, Planetarium, Vale Cavern, and a glass-enclosed Butterfly Gallery. If you really want to get your hands on science, drop by the Nature Exchange where you research “wild” items and earn points that can be used towards buying natural artifacts. You can also cut, grind and polish rocks at the Lapidary Lab. Find out how much fun science really is at ScienceNorth.ca DYNAMIC EARTH This interactive earth sciences museum is inspired by Sudbury’s mining heritage. Explore the many geology and mining exhibits, and don’t forget to stop by and take a selfie with the Big Nickel, the city’s most renowned landmark. Rock out at ScienceNorth.ca/Dynamic-Earth JIM GORDON BOARDWALK If you really want to explore Sudbury, it’s time to take a hike along the Jim Gordon Boardwalk. Beginning at Science North, you’ll wind your way through Bell Park, beaches, playgrounds and picnic areas until you finish your journey by the railway line. SUDBURY EXPLORER’S GUIDE 4 LAKE LAURENTIAN OUTDOOR CONSERVATION AREA EXPERIENCES Located just 10 minutes from downtown Sudbury, Lake Laurentian is a 2,400-acre conservation area. Spend the day exploring a man-made lake and pond, the many lookouts, nature trails, numerous wetlands and hiking trails. When the snow starts falling, you can strap on your snowshoes or cross-country skis to explore this green wonderland. A.Y. JACKSON LOOKOUT Named after one of the famed Group of Seven artists, A.Y. Jackson Lookout is a great way to explore Sudbury. You must check out the view of High Falls as it cascades nearly 200-feet to the Sudbury Basin. You can also enjoy hiking three trails, a self-guided Geological Walking Tour, and a meal at one of the picnic areas. BEACHES Break out your swimming wear and hit the beach! Sudbury has some sandy, secluded beaches for you to kick back and relax, including Bell Park Beach on the shores of Lake Ramsey, or Moonlight Beach, one of Sudbury’s most popular destinations that offers facilities for family picnics and swimming. SUDBURY EXPLORER’S GUIDE 5 FESTIVALS & NORTHERN LIGHTS EVENTS FESTIVAL BORÉAL This annual folk festival, held at Bell Park, is Canada’s longest-running with its inaugural performances taking place all the way back in 1972. Past artists have included Don McLean, Serena Ryder and Daniel Lanois. Get your toes tapping at nlfb.ca JAZZ SUDBURY If you’re a fan of eclectic tunes, the Jazz Sudbury Festival is something you’re not going to want to miss. This five-day festival features club performances at local downtown venues, along with main stage headliner performances held at the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre. The jazz keeps on playing throughout the wee hours at various downtown clubs and venues. Jazz things up at JazzSudbury.ca CINÉFEST SUDBURY Cinephiles will flock to this five-day event that screens over 130 films. Works include full-length features, shorts, documentaries and animation.
