wo beluga whales who had spent almost their entire lives in captivity are now prepar- ing for a new life in an Icelandic sanctuary. As part of an ambitious relocation project, Little TGrey and Little White made an epic journey of more than 6,000 miles from Shanghai Changfeng Ocean World to a large sanctuary in a natural bay at Heimaey, one of the Westman Islands, located off the south- 3 ern coast of Iceland. As the official transport partner, Luxembourg-based all-cargo airline Cargolux flew the whales aboard a special branded Boeing 747-400 ERF, LX-ECV, from Shanghai in China to Keflavik in Iceland. The complex logistical challenge of transporting two beluga whales by air, land and sea was planned and monitored by a team of global experts with experience in transporting marine mammals. In a STAT Times exclusive, Andy Bool, head of the SEA LIFE Trust, Michael Verhuelsdonk, ground engineer at Cargolux, who was on board to handle the operational difficulties and assist the care team, and Marc Roveri, specialist for animal transports at Cargolux reveal what it took to make this journey a success. 4 : Cargolux S 2 h OTO P

a specially branded plane was unveiled which featured Little 1 Grey and Little White on a Boeing 747-400ERF freighter. The 7 plane helped transport the two whales along with a care team to the world’s first open water sanctuary for beluga whales.

Discussion around the planning and feasibility of the 2 transport started about 8-9 months before the final date. It was crucial to ensure that all the requirements were met on both sides before setting a date. The two main concerns were to ensure the animals’ welfare while also complying with safety requirements onboard and adhering to our internal and external processes and procedures. Once both sides were confident the requirements could be met, the logistics could be planned.

The journey began at Changfeng Ocean World in Shanghai. 3 Each beluga was individually lifted onto specially designed stretchers measured to their physical requirements and carefully placed into specially built transportation boxes before they were lifted out of the aquarium by crane and placed carefully into two lorries.

The animals themselves did not pose any operational 4 concerns, but the movement of the water inside the tank was a huge challenge. To avoid the water movement (5-7 tonnes of water) having any impact on flight safety, the team had to come up with a dedicated plan to restrain the container inside the aircraft. Besides the restraining, any kind of water spillage inside the aircraft had to be avoided.

Numerous plans were set in place for every situation – 5 which in april, the team had to initiate given the extreme storms and bad weather in Iceland and the flight was postponed till June. Transporting two large beluga whales over more than 6,000 miles was always going to provide a unique set of challenges. In planning this project, Sea Life Trust worked closely with independent wildlife transportation regulatory bodies, leading veterinary experts, marine conservation partners and the expert animal logistics team at Cargolux. all plans were created to ensure the safety of Little Grey and Little White.

The two whales were accompanied by their care team, 6 including two trainers and two vets who overlooked the complete transport process. an engineer from Cargolux was also on board to handle the operational side related to the transport containers and assist the care team with the water system.

Following the flight, Little Grey and Little White were 7 transferred on to two individual lorries on a two hour drive from the airport to the ferry port and then transported by ferry from the airport to heimaey, a crossing that takes around 30 minutes, to their final destination – Sea Life 5 Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary, the world’s first open water sanctuary for beluga whales.
