    Rules Unique to Lake Pointe Flag Football Down Format • The offensive team takes possession of the ball at its 10-yard line. • The offensive team will have four (4) downs to obtain a first down. A first down is obtained by crossing mid field or scoring a touchdown. U8 ONLY—A first down can be obtained by crossing mid field, scoring a touchdown or crossing the “first down” line on either side of mid field. • On 4th down, a team has two options. 1 A team may play the 4th down to attempt to gain a first down or a touchdown. If a team fails to convert on 4th down (either score or pick up a first down), the ball changes possession at the point of the failed attempt. 2 If a “punt” is selected as the fourth down play, the referee is notified of this choice. The ball is then moved to the 10 yard line and the possession changes. Clock Format • Games consist of two (2) twenty minute halves with a running clock and a 5-minute halftime. • A 45-second play clock will begin after the referee spots the ball ready for play. • Clock stops in the following instances with less than one minute before half-time and the game: - After an incomplete pass - After the ball carrier goes out of bounds - After a touchdown - An extra-point attempt - Official’s time-out - After an interception - During a called time-out until the ball is snapped to begin play • Each team has one (1) 20-second time outs per half.

    Defensive Line Drills Runstopping Drills Read the head drill Purpose To teach the DL to read and recognize the type of block of the opposing OL by his first headmovement, and condition the correct response. Description This is a progression drill, first have 3 DL at a time lineup facing the coach, who will do the head motions. Have the DL react to the motions quickly. The second progression will be to pair up the DL, and a coach standing behind the designated DL signaling the kind of block and snapcount to the designated OL. Have the DL react to the movement of the opposing OL. The third progression will be to line up one DL to three OL to work on correct reaction on away- and combination blocks (i.e. trap- or double-team blocks). Again the coach will stand behind the DL and signal block and snapcount. (To extend this you also can include linebackers.) Coaching Points • Make sure DL focus on a point of the head/helmet. • Have them react as quick as possible. • Work more on quickness and correct technique, than on overpowering the blocker. Read Purpose The purpose of this drill is to improve the reaction of the defensive lineman to the movement of the offensive lineman. Description Set up 3 cones in a triangle about 10 yards apart. Put two linemen facing each other in the middle between two cones, put a designated ballcarrier at the third cone. The player facing the ballcarrier will be the defender, the other player the OL. The coach should stand behind the DL and signaling the direction and the snapcount.

Locust Ave. Pleasant Grove, UT 84062 785-6172 / rec.plgrove.org Pleasant Grove Recreation Flag Football Rules THE FIELD DIMENSIONS – The length of the fields are approximately 45 yards for 1st - 6th grades and 80 yards for 7th - 12th grades. The width of the field is approximately 25 yards for 1st – 6th grades and 35 for 7th – 9th. Each field is divided laterally into equal halves or thirds within which the offensive team has 4 downs to cross into the next zone. SIDELINE – All participants (players, coaches, and spectators) not in the game need to be on the sidelines of the field at least a yard away from the out-of-bounds line. Participants not in the game should not be behind the end zones of the field. Referees may access a penalty to necessary teams if needed. Referees generally will access a warning before giving a penalty. PENALTY – SIDELINE INFRACTION: 5 STEPS / LOS or POI (Offense may elect to replay the play or take the yards if the penalty was against the defense) THE GAME COIN TOSS – Each game will begin with a coin toss. Captains from each team will meet at midfield. The team that arrives at midfield first will have the option of calling the toss in the air. The team that wins the toss will have the option to pick between receiving the ball in the first half, receiving in the second half, or defending a side of the field. The other team will then select the remaining choice.
