RECENSIONES. STARMARKET, TEENAGE FANCLUB, HELLSONGS Y SANTI CAMPOS. © Amador Pérez de Algaba de la Torre. Analista Musical Independiente de Sevilla. España. [email protected] PÉREZ DE ALGABA DE LA TORRE, Amador. (2014). “Recensiones. Starmarket, Teenage Fanclub, Hellsongs y Santi Campos”.

:: View email as a web page :: The spring of 1995 was a crowded season in indie-rock history. Pavement dropped their polarizing third album, the willfully messy and frequently brilliant Wowee Zowee. Yo La Tengo continued their hit streak of low-key masterworks with Eletr-O-Pura. Illinois fuzz-rock quartet Hum hit hard with Youʼd Prefer An Astronaut, and Teenage Fanclub produced one of their finest jangle-pop efforts, Grand Prix. Wilco, Elastica, and Apples In Stereo put out well-regarded debuts. And Red House Painters hit a new high-water mark with Ocean Beach. But even in an era when classic indie records seemed to come out every week, there was nothing quite like Alien Lanes, the eighth full-length LP by a band from Dayton, Ohio called Guided By Voices. Released on April 4, 1995, Alien Lanes arrived with baked-in mythology. It had been supposedly recorded for just $10 in various concrete basements around Dayton by a group of blue-collar guys in their mid-30s. Uproxx dug into the history of this classic and produced this great oral history. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" And The Beginning Of The 21st Century OPENING TRACKS RINA SAWAYAMA This budding indie-pop star is among the buzziest acts to emerge this year, with an ear-catching single called “STFU” that’s like Carly Rae Jepsen if she spent years obsessing over Korn’s Follow The Leader. That pan-genre approach ultimately informs Sawayama — who was born in Japan and raised in London — and her aesthetic.

  • Snow Patrol Biography
SNOW PATROL BIOGRAPHY A few reasons why Snow Patrol are one of the biggest and boldest bands of the past decade: over 15 years, the part Irish, part Scottish five piece have transformed from cultish indie wannabes into a stadium-packing tour de force. They have shifted over ten million albums worldwide and been nominated for Grammys and Brits; scooped Meteors and Ivor Novello Album Awards. At the heart of the band is Gary Lightbody, Snow Patrol‟s frontman and songwriter-in-chief. Over five studio albums, the 33 year-old has sketched heart-bruised laments and arm-around-your-best-mate festival anthems; radio hits and moments of painful introspection. All of these have been gathered together for Up To Now - a double album of 30 singles, cover versions and album tracks. “It‟s a bit like photo album,” says Lightbody. “It‟s a documentation of how the band got to where it is now. We‟ve been working hard for 15 years – it wasn‟t something that happened overnight. We wanted to give people as honest an account of us as a band over the last five albums, warts and all. Yeah, we‟re being selectively honest and we might be covering over some of the cracks, but this collection really feels like an honest portrait of us as a band. “At first we got it down to 40 songs but knew it had to be leaner than that and had a little trouble cutting some things we really liked out. But we got it down to 30 in the end.

“This is the best thing I’ve EVER heard!” Jim Reid, The Jesus & Mary Chain The Mello Festival, Worcester, 2019 Independent Country 6 cowboys from Birmingham (UK) who take Indie classics on a rollickin’ ride to Nashville and back. Floppy fringes and baggy jeans are swapped for pedal steel guitars and four-part harmonies as the NME meets The Grand Ole Opry. In the hands of Independent Country, the Happy Mondays’ freaky dancing hit “Wrote for Luck” becomes a barn-burnin’ foot stomper; Electronic’s “Getting Away With It” transforms into a tear-jerking country waltz, and Oasis’ classic “Rock ’n’ Roll Star” morphs into the greatest Glen Campbell smash hit that Capitol Records never released. The list goes on: New Order, Blur, Stone Roses, Teenage Fanclub, Pulp, Nirvana, Pixies - all get similarly taken apart and put back together again with undoubted musical chops, songwriting craft and creative flair. You ain’t heard nothing like this! Saddle up your ponies and say hello to the best gang in town... Pirate Studios, Birmingham, 2017 Rock and Roll Brewhouse, Birmingham, 2020 Attic Brewery, Birmingham, July 2019 Recordings The band’s debut LP, "TrailerParkLife", was released in December 2016 and featured southern-fried versions of songs by Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, New Order, Teenage Fanclub, and more. They followed this in summer 2018 with a 2nd album, "The True Adventures of Independent Country", taking on tunes by the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, The Smiths and Spiritualized. After releasing the “Brassneck EP” in 2019, featuring songs by The Wedding Present, The Cure and Suede, the band then hunkered down to begin work on their third LP.

  • Like a Precious Family Secret
:: View email as a web page :: Released in 2005, Superwolf by Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Matt Sweeney for years didn’t seem to exist outside of a few small enclaves reserved for hard-core enthusiasts. A profoundly beautiful folk-rock record populated by unreliable narrators, Superwolf at the time was supported by only a small handful of shows and a minimal press campaign. After that, it fell into a digital black hole for more than a decade, having been deliberately held back from streaming platforms until 2018. And yet people kept on discovering Superwolf. It helped that the album had some famous fans. (Rick Rubin loved it so much that he started using Sweeney — an indie-rock veteran who played in Chavez in the 1990s and Zwan in the early aughts — as one of his regular studio musicians.) But it’s the uniquely indelible songs Sweeney wrote with Will Oldham (who has used the Bonnie “Prince” Billy name for much of his work since 1998) that has kept Superwolf alive over the years. If you knew the record, you likely heard about it from a friend, who shared it like a precious family secret. Now Oldham and Sweeney are back with a new album. Read about how it came together here. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" and the Beginning of the 21st Century In case you missed it... The new Indiecast visualizer names modern indie artists whose songs will one day be staples in grocery stores worldwide. • Teenage Fanclub Holder Vinteren I Skak, Når De Deler Ud Af Deres Varme 90'Er Rock I Lille VEGA
