Jacopo Costa Prince in the early 80s: considerations on the structural functions of performative gestures. Transcribing Prince's music can be a very frustrating exercise, as the notes that are put on a score (often quite ordinary) do no justice to the expressive richness we perceive when we listen to his songs. In my intervention, I will propose an analysis of the performative gestures in Prince's music, focusing on a few excerpts from his production of the years 1980-1984 (in terms of albums, from Dirty Mind to Purple Rain). The hypothesis to be tested is that in Prince's music a certain gestural approach to the performance (both instrumental and vocal) has an authentic structural function for the music: in other words, this gestural approach is not simply related to the field of musical interpretation, but has a constitutive function at the formal level of composition.

  • Prince Talks and with the Release of 'Graffiti Bridge,' the Soundtrack to His Forthcoming Movie Musical, the Critics Are Listening
Prince Talks And with the release of 'Graffiti Bridge,' the soundtrack to his forthcoming movie musical, the critics are listening. But don't even try to take notes. Prince performing at Wembley, London, August 22nd, 1990. Graham Wiltshire/Hulton Archive/Getty By Neal Karlen October 18, 1990 The phone rings at 4:48 in the morning. "Hi, it's Prince," says the wide-awake voice calling from a room several yards down the hallway of this London hotel. "Did I wake you up?" Though it's assumed that Prince does in fact sleep, no one on his summer European Nude Tour can pinpoint precisely when. Prince seems to relish the aura of night stalker; his vampire hours have been a part of his mad-genius myth ever since he was waging junior-high-school band battles on Minneapolis's mostly black North Side. "Anyone who was around back then knew what was happening," Prince had said two days earlier, reminiscing. "I was working. When they were sleeping, I was jamming. When they woke up, I had another groove. I'm as insane that way now as I was back then." For proof, he'd produced a crinkled dime-store notebook that he carries with him like Linus's blanket. Empty when his tour started in May, the book is nearly full, with twenty-one new songs scripted in perfect grammar-school penmanship. He has also been laboring on the road over his movie musical Graffiti Bridge, which was supposed to be out this past summer and is now set for release in November.

Like many other young children, Karenna had heard Prince’s music on the radio and wanted to hear more. Upon listening to the full album Karenna alerted her mother to the provocative nature of some of Prince’s lyrics, such as the track “Darling Nikki,” which contained the lyrics “I knew a girl named Nikki/Guess you could say she was a sex fiend/I met her in a hotel lobby/Masturbating with a magazine.”1 Tipper and Karenna Gore were embarrassed and ashamed that they were listening to such vulgar music, that they were doing so in their home. Deviance and profanity, something that one would expect to find in the street or back alleys had gotten into their home, albeit unwittingly. Tipper Gore soon realized that similar content was being broadcast into their home through other mediums, such as the new, wildly popular Music Television (MTV).

  • Parental Advisory: Tipper Gore and the PMRC
Volume 5, Issue No. 1. Parental Advisory: Tipper Gore and the PMRC Avery Anderson Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA ÒÏ Abstract: A defender of childhood innocence and the wife of a powerful politician, Tipper Gore became the spokesperson for concerned mothers after forming the Parents’ Music Resource Center (PMRC). Joining forces with Susan Baker, wife of the secretary of the treasury, and other similarly well-connected women, Gore formed the PMRC to combat “porn rock”: a catch-all for the explicit sins and excesses depicted in some of the rock music of the time. She felt that these excesses had the potential to corrupt the nation’s youth, so the women of the PMRC came up with a solution: label offensive albums with a warning sticker. Leveraging the power of their influential husbands, the PMRC and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) were called before the Senate Commerce Technology and Transportation Committee for a hearing. While the hearing was still ongoing, the PMRC and RIAA came to an agreement behind the scenes. The RIAA agreed to place a Parental Advisory — Explicit Content label on albums with potentially objectionable lyrics, an addition that had drastic effects on the music industry. This case explores the relations between motherhood and culture, negotiating the ambiguities between good-natured efforts at protection and explicit censorship. Tipper Gore Takes a Stand It was in late December of 1984 when Tipper Gore brought home Prince’s chart-topping Purple Rain for her 11-year-old daughter. Karenna had begged her mother for the album after hearing the innocuous hit “Let’s Go Crazy” on the radio.
