Take the contrast of the collection's ultra‐generic title and its attention‐grabbing, out‐of‐left‐field release. Take the retro‐futuristic, Funkadelic‐inspired grooves that simmer under tracks like “untitled 02” and “untitled 06.” These are only the beginning of the album's hypnotic, nuanced nod to hip‐hop’s deep roots and unstoppable political and expressive currency. Songs like “untitled 03” and “untitled 05”—with layered references, wild‐eyed jazz solos, and cutting insight—continue Lamar's winning streak. Watch Out Key Points: While 2 Chainz has become one of the most reliably entertaining personalities in the pop‐rap orbit, Lil’ Wayne remains a trickster extraordinaire and rap myth made flesh. A portmanteau of the neighborhoods where they grew up (Chainz in College Park, just outside Atlanta; Wayne in Hollygrove, New Orleans), Collegrove is an inspired pairing, from the quiet menace of “Gotta Lotta” (produced by Cash Money legend Mannie Fresh) to the mentholated reggae of “MFN” (produced by Atlantans Mike Will Made‐It and Zaytoven) and the sprawling “Rolls Royce Weather Every Day,” where Wayne issues a rare apology: “I do me and love it, Lord I done overdid it.” INTERNAL USE Label Name: Def Jam Territory: International Release Type: O For additional artist information please contact Fraser MacKenzie at 416‐718‐4209 or [email protected]. Please see vinyl release section for production information Electro‐pop artist Lights has announced Midnight Machines, an album comprised of six acoustic songs from her third studio album Little Machines , plus two brand new songs. The never‐before‐heard tracks are “Follow You Down” and “Head Cold”, and the leading single is an acoustic version of “Meteorites”. The video for the acoustic version of “Meteorites” premiered internationally on NYLON. Check it out here. The video for “Meteorites” was shot entirely in reverse and was recorded in Toronto. Lights even had to sing every lyric backwards and at double speed during the filming, an undeniably impressive feat. "Midnight Machines is more than just an acoustic record, it's a complete reinvention of some of the songs from Little Machines. I worked with a string section and my band to create this ultra vibey, late night version. Making the video for Meteorites was almost as interesting to work on because I had to learn the song backwards and sped up to create the slow surreality of the shots." ‐ LIGHTS Midnight Machines is Lights’ third acoustic album, a tradition that started when she reinterpreted her first studio release, and it has carried through on every album. This time, Lights worked with a string quartet on completely new and full arrangements that breathe completely different life into their electro‐rock counterparts. Also announced, Lights will perform acoustically for fans at The Danforth Music Hall in Toronto on May 3 and at The Vogue in Vancouver on May 14.

August 2020 Our world has changed, both globally and in Toronto where LIGHTS operates. Dealing with the unforeseen challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a significant toll on people who have an intellectual disability and their families. The 3,600 individuals waiting for long-term housing in Toronto were al- ready on the edge of crisis and are now facing even greater barriers to seeking a home of their own. The emotional, physical, and financial drain on them will be even more overwhelming now. A few people in the LIGHTS family had the opportunity to meet with Minister Todd Smith’s staff by phone earlier this summer. We heard that the Ministry of Children, Advisory Board Community and Social Services is committed to protecting the health and well-being of all individuals who have an intellectual disability. The challenge is huge and changes in how services are delivered and funded need to occur. Mary Pat Armstrong, Chair This Ministry believes in a system that supports a responsive, person-directed Doug Biggar approach that is sustainable for many years. Minister Smith’s staff shared with us Andrew Boddington that the Ministry will be undertaking Developmental Services Sector Reform. This Lisa Davis approach needs to include long-term policy and program changes and they Iain Dobson understand this may take up to ten years to completely put in place. Hopefully, the Ann Doritty core fundamental elements will be solid and lasting. They told us that the approach Joanne Fletcher to our sector will be individualized, needs-based, person-directed, responsive, and Katie Flynn seamless.

  • War in the Age of Intelligent Machines
Introduction The image of the ''killer robot" once belonged uniquely to the world of science fiction. This is still so, of course, but only if one thinks of human like mechanical contraptions scheming to conquer the planet. The latest weapons systems planned by the Pentagon, however, offer a less anthropo morphic example of what machines with "predatory capabilities" might be like: pilotless aircraft and unmanned tanks "intelligent" enough to be able to select and destroy their own targets. Although the existing prototypes of robotic weapons, like the PROWLER or the BRAVE 3000, are not yet truly autonomous, these new weapons do demonstrate that even if Artificial Intel ligence is not at present sufficiently sophisticated to create true "killer robots,'' when synthetic intelligence does make its appearance on the planet, there will already be a predatory role awaiting it. The PROWLER, for example, is a small terrestrial armed vehicle, equipped with a primitive form of "machine vision" (the capability to ana lyze the contents of a video frame) that allows it to maneuver around a battlefield and distinguish friends from enemies. Or at least this is the aim of the robot's designers. In reality, the PROWLER still has difficulty negoti ating sharp turns or maneuvering over rough terrain, and it also has poor friend/foe recognition capabilities. For these reasons it has been deployed only for very simple tasks, such as patrolling a military installation along a predefined path. We do not know whether the PROWLER has ever opened fire on an intruder without human supervision, but it is doubtful that as currently designed this robot has been authorized to kill humans on its own.

M796883front.qxd 8/1/05 11:15 AM Page 1 Media Ecologies Media Ecologies Materialist Energies in Art and Technoculture Matthew Fuller In Media Ecologies, Matthew Fuller asks what happens when media systems interact. Complex objects such as media systems—understood here as processes, or ele- ments in a composition as much as “things”—have become informational as much as physical, but without losing any of their fundamental materiality. Fuller looks at this multi- plicitous materiality—how it can be sensed, made use of, and how it makes other possibilities tangible. He investi- gates the ways the different qualities in media systems can be said to mix and interrelate, and, as he writes, “to produce patterns, dangers, and potentials.” Fuller draws on texts by Félix Guattari and Gilles Deleuze, as well as writings by Friedrich Nietzsche, Marshall McLuhan, Donna Haraway, Friedrich Kittler, and others, to define and extend the idea of “media ecology.” Arguing that the only way to find out about what happens new media/technology when media systems interact is to carry out such interac- tions, Fuller traces a series of media ecologies—“taking every path in a labyrinth simultaneously,” as he describes one chapter. He looks at contemporary London-based pirate radio and its interweaving of high- and low-tech “Media Ecologies offers an exciting first map of the mutational body of media systems; the “medial will to power” illustrated by analog and digital media technologies.
