Almost half of the B&H population was forced from their homes. The ethnic map of the country was changed drastically and overall damage was estimated at US $100 billion. Experts agree that misuse of the media was largely responsible for the events that triggered the war and kept it going despite all attempts at peace. This study examines and follows the efforts of the international community to regulate the broadcast media environment in postwar B&H. One of the greatest challenges for the international community in B&H was the elimination of hate language in the media. There was constant resistance from the local ethnocentric political parties in the establishment of the independent media regulatory body and implementation of new standards.

The thesis argues that analysis of these practices shows how this culture is consumption oriented, event-driven and media obsessed. Initially, this argument is developed from a critical, hermeneutic, relativist and interpretive assessment that draws upon the works of authors such as Baudrillard and De Bord and other critiques of contemporary ‘digital culture’. The empirical part of the thesis then examines the array of popular search terms used on the World Wide Web over a period of 16 months from September 2001 to February 2003. Taxanomic classification of these search terms reveals the limited range of virtual and physical artefacts that are sought by the users of Web search engines. While nineteen hundred individual artefacts occur in the array of search terms, these can classified into a relatively small group of higher order categories. Critical analysis of these higher order categories reveals six cultural traits that predominant in the apparently wide array of search terms; freeness, participation, do-it-yourself/customisation, anonymity/privacy, perversion and information richness.

    TELEVISION NEWS BROADCASTING AND JOURNALISM IN TURKEY The Impact of Political, Economic and Socio-Cultural Change in the 1990s Melek ATABEY Submitted in Accordance with the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of London Department of Culture, Communication and Societies Institute of Education University of London July 1998 2 ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to investigate current issues in Turkish journalism with specific reference to television news broadcasting. It does so by combining two main theoretical approaches to the study of news production: the political economy perspective and the culturalist view, both of which are critically explored as part of the research. In collecting data, various methods were employed; interviews with journalists, and quantitative and qualitative analysis of news programmes. The study consists of two main parts. At the macro level, a review of recent changes in broadcast media around the world, and the main theoretical perspectives on news and journalism with regard to Turkish television news are followed by the examination of the historical development of journalism, and its present socio-economic and professional context in Turkey. At the micro level, the study focuses on television news. A general overview of news broadcasting in Turkey is provided to explore the significance of television news for the Turkish public. The remaining chapters of the study analyse coverage of domestic political and economic events, and foreign news stories on six main television stations, with regard to their quantitative and qualitative content. The findings indicated that the commercial, institutional, and ideological stance of television channels influenced the content of news stories.

    PHYSICAL CULTURE AND SPORT STUDIES AND RESEARCH DOI: 10.2478/v10141-009-0036-7 Nakedness and Movement Culture Ivo Jirásek Palacký University in Olomouc, Czech Republic ABSTRACT The paper deals with a topic which is not very frequent in kinanthropology; it concerns the phenomenon of the naked body in the environment of movement culture. Within the individual aspects of this cultural subsystem (sport, movement education, movement recreation, movement therapy, and movement art), it points out a variety of meanings and contexts adding sense to nudity on a continuum ranging from naturalness and functionality through erotization and sexualization to pornoization of particularly sport environment. The author prefers a functional naturalness of nudity and rejects the instrumentalization and changing human body into a thing and, thus, exceeding the characteristics of the sphere of movement culture. KEYWORDS nudity, movement culture, sexualization of sport, pornoization of sport, naturalness Cultural dimension of nudity An undressed human body is given by nature (humans are born naked), however, it is evident that the meaning and purpose of nudity is determined exclusively by the cultural and social environment (shame is realized along with the process of socialization and education of an individual), by a set of values ascribed to nudity in a given cultural background. In this sense, the body without any clothing can be a sign of religiosity and spirituality. The Marshall in Mesopotamia, for example, had to be physically flawless when he performed religious rituals and contacted God naked (Heller 1988). Within Christianity, we can observe both a certain distance from physical nudity and its emphasis, as in the sect of the Adamites, in reports related to the phenomenon of witchcraft and inquisition, but also in the interconnection of mythical and erotic images (the issue of the relationship of religious imagination regarding nudity and sexuality in Colonial Mexico in the 17 th century is deeply explored by Tortorici, 2007).
