ANNUAL REPORT 2012 THIS IS AN INDICATIVE MAP /ARTIST’S REPRESENTATION - NOT TO SCALE PROGRAMME AREAS OF AKRSP (INDIA) GUJARAT BHARUCH, SURAT, NARMADA, TAPI, NAVSARI and DANG districts are some of the poorest areas in the state of Gujarat. A very poor tribal community lives on undulating and degraded land that was once heavily forested. Primitive Tribal Groups, largely landless, eke out a livelihood through labour and bamboo work. JUNAGADH and PORBANDAR districts face problems of groundwater depletion and salinity ingress on the coast and over-exploitation of the Gir Forest. Multi-caste and multi-religious communities are struggling to maintain their livelihoods. SURENDRANAGAR and RAJKOT districts are amongst the most drought-prone districts of Gujarat. Most of the villages in these districts face an acute scarcity of water. MADHYA PRADESH KHANDWA, BARWANI, BURHANPUR and KHARGONE districts in Madhya Pradesh are home to marginalized tribal populations who live in poverty despite the rich natural resource base. BIHAR MUZAFFARPUR and SAMASTIPUR districts in fl ood-prone Bihar are low in Human Development Indices (HDI), have very low literacy rates and migration to the urban areas is key source of livelihood. LOST HERITAGE OF FORT SETTLEMENT - A CASE STUDY ON DEVANAHALLI FORT, INTRODUCTION: With rapid growth in population, urbanization seems to wrap its arms around the heritage fabric, assimilating within it all its cultural charm, its traditions and its very existence. Intense vandalization of rural fabric with replacement of modern era buildings seems to supersede the cultural techniques and the sense of tradition in the settings. In the expansive demand for jobs, opportunities, and buildings to accommodate all of it, the places which symbolize the local history and its significance becomes miniscule and nullified by the ferocious wave of urbanization. This paper is an effort to study and exhibit the potential of a victim of urbanization, Devanahalli fort and to forward few guidelines to save and retain its originality to supply it for the knowledge of future generation to understand the local history.

2 Lal Bahadur Shastri 1 An Illustrious Life Birth and Early Days India’s second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri popularly known as Shastriji was born on October 2, 1904 in Uttar Pradesh at a place known as Mughal Sarai, a very well known city. Lal Bahadur’s father, Shri Sharda Prasad Shrivastva was a school teacher. His mother Ram Dulari Devi was the proud daughter of this country, who gave birth to this great son who rose to the highest position and led the country on the principles cherished by Gandhiji and Jawaharlal Nehru. Interestingly, Lal Bahadur’s birthday falls on the same day as that of his mentor Mahatma Gandhi. Unfortunately, Lal Bahadur could not have the love and affection of his father since he died prematurely when Lal Bahadur was only one and a half years old. Fatherless Child His parents Sharda Prasad and Ram Dulari Devi were agriculturists. Shrivastava was part of Lal Bahadur’s name. He dropped that part indicating his caste, when he grew up. He did not like such indications of caste. Lal Bahadur’s father, a poor teacher at first, became a clerk in the Revenue Office at Allahabad. Here, too, he earned very little. But, even though he was poor, An Illustrious Life 3 he never accepted bribes. He lived a life of honesty and integrity. Sharda Prasad died when Lal Bahadur was only a year old. Ram Dulari Devi felt as though the skies had come down on her. Her father gave shelter to her and her three children, a boy and two girls.
