Press Kit the Baha Men Biography BAHA MEN PRESS KIT THE BAHA MEN BIOGRAPHY The Bahamian music and dance tradition of Junkanoo, which traces back to the slavery days when slaves were allowed to gather together one day a week for festivities, is fused with the modern influences of dance rhythms, pop music and Latin percussion by Isaiah Taylor and his band, The Baha Men. The group's debut, Junkanoo, was released in 1992, and was very traditional in its sound. They soon began aiming their music at a more mainstream audience, however, and finally succeeded with 2000's remake of "Who Let the Dogs Out?" originally com- posed by Anslem Douglas with the help of dear friend Orlando Infante; The album went on to sell over five million copies. Their most recent album was Holla! released in 2004. Baha Men has also won a Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Dance Recording for "Who Let the Dogs Out?". In the same year they won a Billboard Music Award for World Mu- sic Artist of the Year and World Music Album of the Year. In 2002 they won a Nickelo- deon Kids Choice Award for Favorite Band and Favorite Song. The Baha Men were one of the many artists to record a song on the album DisneyMania and two of its four sequels. On the first DisneyMania, they recorded "Hakuna Matata" from The Lion King. On DisneyMania 2, they recorded the famous song "It's a Small World" from the Disney park attraction of the same name. They were absent from Dis- neyMania 3, though they returned for DisneyMania 4, recording their take on the song "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" from Lilo and Stitch entitled "Bahaman Roller Coaster Ride." A number of their songs have used in major motion pictures such as: Rugrats In Paris, Miss Congeniality, Rat Race, and Garfield: The Movie. They also recorded a cover of Elton John's hit "Crocodile Rock" for the film Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course star- ring Steve Irwin and family. In fact, the band has also made an appearance on the big screen, when they starred as themselves in the 1994 romantic comedy My Father the Hero starring Gerard Depardieu and Katherine Heigl.[2] Despite rumors of their true ori- gin they are from, and formed in, the Bahamas. In June 2008, their song "Who Let the Dogs Out?" was discussed on I Love the New Mil- lennium. Currently The Baha Men are in the studio recording a brand new album to be released in 2010. They will begin touring extensively beginning in September - November throughout the United States and Europe, in preparation of their CD release on Probability Records and distributed through BDG/RED a division of Sony Music Entertainment.     The Child Voice as Social Construct Ardelle Ries University of Alberta, Alberta, Canada Sociology provides a contextual milieu for pedagogy and provides a cultural explanation for pedagogical motives and method. In the world of sociology, the figurative voices of women and other minority groups have been thoroughly examined via feminist theory dealing with the oppressor and the oppressed. Within the last 20 years, children's voices are now included in the same paradigm providing much research and writing that focuses on the agency and empowerment of children, adult control, and the plasticity of children's behaviour. From a musician's perspective, I was curious about the correlation between the figurative and literal notion of voice prompting many questions pertaining to the true nature of the child singing voice. What social attitudes exist concerning children's singing voices? Who defines the child singing voice? Who decides and what controls the acceptable nature of the child singing voice? The following logic is used to place the child singing voice within a social context: • The human singing voice embodies and reflects the society and culture that surrounds it. • The human singing voice can be creative and original, but it also imitates and mirrors the predominant society or culture in which it resides. • Because childhood is a stage or time of life created within a societal and cultural framework, the child singing voice can consequently be considered a reflection of childhood within society. • As Western society changes, so do attitudes toward children and their childhoods; therefore, perceptions of the child singing voice change alongside shifting attitudes toward children and childhood within society.
