In the Almeida's most ambitious project to date, the company presented Richard II and Coriolanus this spring and summer at the Gainsborough Studios in London, a former generating station that has been closed fo r fifty years. The studios-where Alfred Hitchcock created hi s classic films Th e Lodger and The Lady Vanishes-housed a temporary auditorium created specifically for these Shakespeare productions. The cast has dedi cated more than eight months to the project. Following the opening performance of Richard If on April 12 (previews began March 30), The Guardian stated that Ralph Fiennes gave "an unequivocal star performance." Coriolanus, which the Daily Mail described as "superbly rendered in Jonathan Kent's production," began previews on June I , and opened on June 14; both plays ran in repertory at Gainsborough Studios until August 5. Together, th e plays mark the third collaboration between director Jonathan Kent and Fiennes: the actor played the title roles in Kent's renderings of Hamlet (a 1995 production that transferred to the Belasco Theatre on Broadway) and Ivanov (a 1997 project that traveled to Moscow after a run at the Almeida). Following the September BAM engagement, the plays will be presented at the Akasaka Theatre in Tokyo from October 11 -29. Shake, peare' hi storical verse tragedy Richard II traces the decline and fall of a yo ung, willful ruler. Coriolanus, set in the same volatile Rome as Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra, is the story of a legend ary Roman warrior whose obstinate nature and obsessive sense of honor lead to exile, revenge and, ultimately, hi s own death. The plays will run in repertory at BAM; on three Saturdays (September 16, 23, and 30), it will be possible to attend both plays, with Coriolanus at I :30pm and Richard If at 7:30pm. Two special performances will take place during the engagement. A gala benefiting BAM will take place in conjunction with the September 6 performance of Richard fl. • Actors and Accents in Shakespearean Performances in Brazil: an Incipient National Theater1
Scripta Uniandrade, v. 15, n. 3 (2017) Revista da Pós-Graduação em Letras – UNIANDRADE Curitiba, Paraná, Brasil ACTORS AND ACCENTS IN SHAKESPEAREAN PERFORMANCES IN BRAZIL: AN INCIPIENT NATIONAL THEATER1 DRA. LIANA DE CAMARGO LEÃO Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) Curitiba, Paraná, Brasil ([email protected]) DRA. MAIL MARQUES DE AZEVEDO Centro Universitário Campos de Andrade, UNIANDRADE Curitiba, Paraná, Brasil. ([email protected]) ABSTRACT: The main objective of this work is to sketch a concise panorama of Shakespearean performances in Brazil and their influence on an incipient Brazilian theater. After a historical preamble about the initial prevailing French tradition, it concentrates on the role of João Caetano dos Santos as the hegemonic figure in mid nineteenth-century theatrical pursuits. Caetano’s memorable performances of Othello, his master role, are examined in the theatrical context of his time: parodied by Martins Pena and praised by Machado de Assis. References to European companies touring Brazil, and to the relevance of Paschoal Carlos Magno’s creation of the TEB for a theater with a truly Brazilian accent, lead to final succinct remarks about the twenty-first century scenery. • Popularization in Fiennes's Coriolanus
Journal of Student Writing Number 35 Sight, Sound, and News: Popularization in Fiennes’s Coriolanus Tilly Jackson he genre of Shakespeare on film has caused much controversy over the years, with film critics and academics at once decrying it as “de- T volution of Shakespeare” (Boose and Burt 18) and applauding it as a “site for innovation in the style, substance, and practice of modern per- formance” (Worthen 2). Over the past 25 years or so, however, this genre has proven itself all the more controversial by popularization, the tech- nique of modernizing Shakespeare and casting movie stars instead of trained Shakespearean stage actors in an effort to break new ground with the centuries-old playtexts as well as bring the classic works to a larger, younger audience. This has been called the “Hollywoodization of Shake- speare in the 1990s” (Boose and Burt 8). Perhaps the most striking popu- larized film adaptations of Shakespeare’s works are the tragedies, recon- structed into sweeping epics with distinctly modern twists. Radical exam- ples include Baz Luhrmann’s media-filled William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Al Pacino’s theatre documentary, Looking for Richard (1996). Discussing such films in A Companion to Shakespeare’s Works, Mark Thornton Burnett remarks that [...] contemporary versions of the tragedies contemplate the burdens of textuality and meditate self-consciously upon their own existence. At the same time, they push at the boundaries of the Shakespearean, feeding from their immediate contexts and from each other in generically variegated, visually arresting, technically versatile, and media-fashioned realizations of the dramatic originals.
