Memphis Park Commission

Scope and Content

In 1900, the City of Memphis established the Memphis Park Commission in an effort to oversee the City’s parks and to expand its parkland and resources. The Park Commission felt a large, successful park system would promote Memphis’s health and appearance. Over the next century, the Memphis Park Commission grew to include 166 parks, Golf courses, Museums, Fairgrounds, a , and Community Centers, in addition to providing indoor and outdoor recreation to the public.

The Memphis Park Commission Collection consists of 15 boxes spanning 13 linear feet. The Collection contains correspondence, brochures, and other materials from the turn of the century to the 1990s. However, most materials date from the early-1970s into the mid-1980s.

Highlights from the collection include information regarding the Orpheum renovation; the Pink Palace Museum renovation, the development of Mud Island River Park, Cotton Carnival Children’s Parades, and Memphis Park Commission Scrapbooks. The Collection also contains extensive photographs of the Park Commission’s recreational facilities and activities during the 1970s.

Single photocopies or scans of unpublished writings in these papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research.
